Andoni Monforte Arregui (born 12 June 1946) is a Spanish politician and lawyer from the Basque Country. He served in the Congress of Deputies and the European Parliament as a member of the Basque Nationalist Party.
Monforte was born in Mallabia,in the province of Biscay. He studied law at the University of Valencia and from 1972 to 1977 worked as a lawyer for the Mondragon Corporation. [1] A member of the Basque Nationalist Party,Monforte was elected to the Congress of Deputies in 1977,1979 and 1982. [2] In the run-up to the 1986 NATO membership referendum he stated that the origins of the organization were closely linked to democracy,and advocated for a common European defense policy. [3]
He also served as Minister of Health of the Basque General Council (the predecessor of the current Basque Government) from 1978 to 1980. [4] In December 1985 he was elected by the Cortes Generales as one of the sixty members of the European Parliament for Spain until an election could be held. [5] He served from January 1986 to July 1987. [6]

Voters were asked whether they ratified a proposed Statute of Autonomy of the Basque Country bill organizing the historical territories of Álava,Biscay and Gipuzkoa into an autonomous community of Spain. The final draft of the bill had been approved by the Basque parliamentary assembly on 29 December 1978,but it required ratification through a binding referendum and its subsequent approval by the Spanish Cortes Generales,as established by Article 151 of the Spanish Constitution of 1978.
EH Bildu,short for Euskal Herria Bildu,is a left-wing,Basque nationalist and pro-independence political party and a federation of political parties in Spain. It is the main political force of the abertzale left in Spain. The election was held simultaneously with a regional election in Galicia. Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu announced that the election would be held one month ahead of schedule,on 25 September 2016,based on the "climate of ungovernability" affecting national politics as a result of the ongoing Spanish government formation negotiations,intending to move the regional election as far away as possible from a possible new general election. This prompted Galician president Alberto Núñez Feijóo to hold the Galician regional election in the same date.
