Dentistry, also known as dental medicine and oral medicine, is the branch of medicine focused on the teeth, gums, and mouth. It consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, management, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the mouth, most commonly focused on dentition as well as the oral mucosa. Dentistry may also encompass other aspects of the craniofacial complex including the temporomandibular joint. The practitioner is called a dentist.

In dentistry, a crown or a dental cap is a type of dental restoration that completely caps or encircles a tooth or dental implant. The Dental Schools Council represents the interests of Irish and UK dental schools as it relates to national health, wealth, knowledge acquisition through teaching, research, and the profession of dentistry. Composed of the Dean or equivalent of each dental school in the UK and Ireland, the current chair is Professor Chris Deery, Dean, School of Clinical Dentistry at the University of Sheffield. Ralf Johannes Radlanski is a German anatomist, orthodontist and university professor. From 1992 to 2024 he was director of the Dept. of Craniofacial Developmental Biology at the Center for Dental and Craniofacial Sciences, Charité – University Medicine Berlin (Germany). When he became emeritus, the institution was closed. All of his lectures are published on YouTube. He was a guest professor at the University of California, San Francisco (USA), at the University of Turku (Finland), at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, at the University of Basle (Switzerland), and at the University of Zurich (Switzerland). He is a Dr. honoris causa at Coorg Institute of Dental Sciences Virajpet (India).
Stanley Gelbier is emeritus professor of dental public health and honorary professor of the history of dentistry at King's College London. He is a past president of the History of Medicine Society, and the former curator of the British Dental Association's museum.
John Saville Zamet FDS was a periodontist in the United Kingdom. He established the first exclusively periodontal practice in London in 1966.
Anne M. Young is a Professor of Biomaterials at University College London, where she works on the development and characterisation of new materials for the repair of tooth and bone.
Stephen Porter is Director of UCL Eastman Dental Institute where he has been Professor of Oral Medicine since 1997. He is a consultant in Oral Medicine at University College Hospital, London and a member of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons. Porter has published more than 450 scholarly works, including the scientific journals The BMJ, The British Dental Journal and The Journal of the American Dental Association.
