Described by The Times in 1965 as one of the world's ten best newspapers, The Hindu remains India's premiere left-liberal daily -- a national gazette with an unmistakably Dravidian flavor. The name of the newspaper is not to be confused with the Hindu religion, but is rather a reference to Hindustan. Former editor N. Ram, writing in "The Hindu: A Brief History of the Newspaper", explains that the gazette resolutely refuses to align its editorial policy along religious lines, seeking rather to represent the diverse cultural and religious heritage of the sub-continent. The founders aimed to create a newspaper that would be inclusive and cater to the entire Indian society, transcending religious boundaries. Indeed, since its first publication in 1878, and continuing to the modern day, The Hindu has taken a staunch uncompromising stand against ultra-nationalism, and ethno-religious fundamentalism, opting rather to reflect in its editorial style the signature Dravidian progressive zeitgeist. It began as a weekly in 1878 and became a daily in 1889. It is one of the Indian newspapers of record and the second most circulated English-language newspaper in India, after The Times of India. As of March 2018, The Hindu is published from 21 locations across 11 states of India.
