Andrew Tolman (born January 9, 1986) is an American studio musician and songwriter. He is a member of the cult club band the Moth & The Flame. [1] He was also a founding member of the pop rock band Imagine Dragons, leaving the group before the release of their debut album but returning as a touring member in 2023.

In 2016–17, Tolman went on tour with Mondo Cozmo as part of the backing band along with Drew Beck, Chris Null, and James Gordon. [2]

Personal life

Tolman is a graduate of Caleb Chapman's Soundhouse, a musician training program headquartered in Utah, and a former member of its flagship group, Caleb Chapman's Crescent Super Band. He also studied music at Brigham Young University.

He is married to keyboardist Brittany Tolman.

Career

Imagine Dragons (2008–2011)

Tolman's drumming can be heard on Imagine Dragons' first four EPs, Speak to Me (2008), Imagine Dragons (2009), Hell and Silence (2010), and It's Time (2011) along with his wife Brittany on keyboards and backing vocals. He and Brittany play on multiple songs from their debut album, Night Visions (2012) (including multi-platinum single "It's Time"; US #15, UK #23) [3] [4] , despite leaving the group before its release.

In 2018, Andrew and Brittany re-joined Imagine Dragons during a show in Las Vegas for one song.

In 2023, Tolman filled in for Imagine Dragons' Daniel Platzman on drums for several shows of the Mercury World Tour. [5]

The Moth & The Flame (2012–present)

Tolman's drumming can be heard on The Moth & The Flame's first EP entitled & EP (2013) which was produced by Joey Waronker (Beck, Atoms for Peace, R.E.M.) and released via Hidden Records. [6] A second EP entitled Young & Unafraid EP was released via Elektra Records and produced by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), Tony Hoffer (M83, Beck), and Nate Pyfer (Parlor Hawk, Fictionist). [7] It included the single "Young & Afraid" which reached #37 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

Additional projects

Tolman is a studio drummer for Mount Saint, an indie pop group fronted by his wife, also a former member of Imagine Dragons. [8]

In 2016, Andrew and wife Brittany released two singles, "Chaperone" and "Freeway", for their alt pop duo called Tolman. [9]

It was recorded inside of Studio X at the Palms Hotel and Casino during the autumn of 2010. All songs were written and produced by Imagine Dragons and mixed by Grammy-nominated engineer Mark Needham.

<i>Continued Silence EP</i> 2012 EP by Imagine Dragons

Continued Silence EP is the fifth EP by American rock band Imagine Dragons, released on February 14, 2012 by KIDinaKORNER and Interscope Records. It was recorded at Westlake Recording Studios. All songs were written by Imagine Dragons and produced by Alex Da Kid, with mixing by engineer Manny Marroquin and engineer Rich Costey. The EP was mastered by mastering engineer Joe LaPorta. All of the songs on Continued Silence were featured on the band's debut album Night Visions except for "My Fault" and "Round and Round", which were later included on deluxe editions of Night Visions. Previous purchases of songs from the EP counted towards Night Visions and decreased its price.

Imagine Dragons is the eponymous second extended play (EP) by the American rock band of the same name, released on August 24, 2009. It was recorded at Battle Born Studios. All songs were written and produced by Imagine Dragons. Engineering was done by Robert Root. Tracks from the EP featured on Windows Media Player after the band won a competition on Reverbnation. The track "I Need a Minute" cracked the CMJ Radio 200. "Cover Up" appears on various deluxe editions of the band's debut album Night Visions.

The album was primarily produced by the band themselves, as well as English hip-hop producer Alex da Kid and Brandon Darner from the American indie rock group The Envy Corps. According to frontman Dan Reynolds, the album took three years to finish, with six of the album's tracks being previously released on multiple EPs. Musically, Night Visions exhibits influences of folk, hip hop and pop.
