Andris Blicavs (born 30 July 1954) is an Australian retired basketball player.

Biography

Blicavs was born in New Zealand to Latvian immigrant parents. He grew up in Adelaide and Melbourne. [2] His sister Ilze also played the game at elite level.

Blicavs played for the Australia men's national basketball team during the 1970s. He competed for Australia at the 1974 World Championship in Puerto Rico and the 1978 World Championship in the Philippines. Blicavs also represented Australia at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. [3]

Blicavs is married to former Opals player Karen Ogden, who represented Australia at the 1983 World Championship held in Brazil. [4] Their son Mark was drafted by the Geelong Football Club in 2012, while their daughter Sara has played basketball for the Australian Insitiute of Sport and Dandenong Rangers. [5] [6] [7]

Although after 1939, Latvia were forced to suspend their national team operations, due to the Occupation of the Baltic states during World War II. From 1994 onwards, the Opals have been consistently competitive and successful having won nine medals at official FIBA international tournaments, highlighted by a gold medal winning performance at the 2006 World Championship in Brazil. At the now-defunct regional Oceania Championship for Women, the Opals won 15 titles. In 2017, FIBA combined its Oceanian and Asian zones for official senior competitions; following this change, the Opals compete in the FIBA Women's Asia Cup.

Jennifer Hazel (Jenny) Whittle is a retired Australian women's basketball player. Whittle was a regular member of the national team for over a decade, from 1994 until 2006. Playing Centre, Whittle was a key contributor to the Opals' success at international events during the 1990s and 2000s, with strong rebounding and defence a feature of her game. Following an outstanding national and WNBL career, Whittle was elected to the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016.

Andrej Lemanis is a Latvian-Australian professional basketball coach and former player. Lemanis served as the head coach of Australia national team from 2013 to 2019. Lemanis coached the New Zealand Breakers of the Australian National Basketball League from 2005 to 2013, taking them to three consecutive championship titles in 2011, 2012 and 2013. He was awarded the NBL Coach of the Year award in 2012 and 2013. Lemanis was the head coach of the Brisbane Bullets of the NBL from 2016 to 2021.

Steve Breheny is an Australian basketball player and coach. He played eight years in the National Basketball League (NBL) for the Coburg Giants, the Geelong Cats and the St. Kilda Saints. At international level, he played for Australia at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1982 FIBA World Championship. After retiring, Breheny coached at NBL level for the Canberra Cannons and the Geelong Supercats. He also led Women's National Basketball League (WNBL) teams Coburg Cougars and Adelaide Lightning.
