Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga (born April 4,1960 [1] ) is a Nigerian Professor of Zoology who was the 2nd substantive Rector of Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi-Uku and He is currently the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of Delta State University,Abraka. [2]
Andy Egwunyenga obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1969;he received a West African Secondary School Certificate from Federal Government College,Kaduna State in 1979. [1] He studied zoology at the University of Lagos,where he obtained his B.Sc. in 1982. [3] In 1990,he received a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in zoology with specialization in Applied Entomology and Parasitology from the University of Jos,Plateau State,and he became a professor of zoology at the Delta State University in 2005. [3] He was appointed Second substantive Rector of Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwash Ukwu in 2007 and served until his tenure expired in 2011. [4] [5] [6]
On December 1,2019,Andy Egwunyenga was appointed the seventh substantive Vice Chancellor of Delta State University,Abraka by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to replace Victor Peretomode, [7] and assumed duty on December 2,2019. [8] [9]
Andy Egwunyenga is married to Ebele Egwunyenga who is also a professor in the Department of Educational Administration,Delta State University,Abraka,and they are both blessed with a daughter. [10]
Delta State is a state in the South-South geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Named after the Niger Delta—a large part of which is in the state—the state was formed from the former Bendel State,on 27 August 1991. Bordered on the north by Edo State,the east by Anambra and Rivers states,and that south by Bayelsa State while to the west is the Bight of Benin which covers about 160 kilometres of the state's coastline. The state was initially created with 12 local government areas in 1991,but was later expanded to 19 and now has 25 local government areas. Its capital city is Asaba which is located along the River Niger on the northeastern end of the state,while the state's economic center is the city of Warri on the southwestern coastline.
Lagos State University,popularly known as LASU,is a Lagos state government-owned university established in 1983. Its main campus is situated at Ojo,with sub-campuses at Ikeja and Epe. The university was set up "for the advancement of learning and establishment of academic excellence". The university caters to over 35,000 students. The university was established during the administration of Late Lateef Kayode Jakande. The university offers diploma,degree and post graduate programmes,including an MBA programme. LASU was ranked among the top 600 universities in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2020. On 23 June 2021,LASU emerged as the best young university in Nigeria having been below the age of 50 years to be added. Times Higher Education ranked the Lagos State University as the second best university in Nigeria on 2 September 2020,and was the only state university included in the rankings for 2022. The university has attracted international funding,including for the establishment of a World Bank Group Africa Centre for Excellence on Science,Technology,Engineering,and Mathematics.
The Federal University of Agriculture,Abeokuta is one of the higher institutions of learning owned and run by the Federal government of Nigeria.
The Anioma people are Igbo subgroups predominantly indigenous to present day Delta State,Nigeria,along with communities in Edo State. The Anioma people encompass and are native to the nine northeastern Local Government Areas of Delta State and the Ika-Igbo communities of Edo State. Politically,the Anioma occupy the Delta North Senatorial District where they are the majority group.
There were three Polytechnics in Delta State,Nigeria,all established on 12 November 2002,located in Ogwashi-Uku,Ozoro,and Otefe-Oghara,Oghara. However,the Polytechnic that was in Ozoro has been transformed into a University by the state government. The Government of Delta State reached an understanding with the University of Westminster,London to assist in management and technical support for the institutions. The institutions are centres of excellence in Agriculture,Computing and Information Technology,Fashion Design and Arts and Sports. Besides their primary areas of specialization,all students are trained in Computing and Information Technology as well as business and entrepreneurship.
The Delta State University,Abraka - popularly known as DELSU - is a State government-owned university in Nigeria with the main campus located at Abraka,Delta State and its sub-campus at Oleh. The Oleh campus was established with the 1995 Amended Edict. The university is a multiple-campus university having two campuses within a distance of about 52 km apart. Currently,with a student population of about 22,000,the university offers a range of programmes from the full-time certificate,diploma and degree programmes to part-time evening and weekend degree programmes. DELSU offers postgraduate studies up to a doctoral level. DELSU owns a staff/student counselling centre,an e-learning centre,student accommodation and sporting facilities amidst other infrastructures. It is one of over twenty-five state-owned universities which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission.
Ogwashi Ukwu,sometimes spelt as Ogwashi-Uku, is an Igbo town in Delta State,Nigeria. Located west of the state capital Asaba,it is the headquarters for the Local Government Area,Aniocha South. The population of Ogwashi-Ukwu is about 50,234.. However,its number has increased vastly and keeps increasing. It is an Anioma region of Delta State which is home to the Igbo-speaking people of Delta State. Its natives are the Enuani people,who are predominantly farmers and fishers. The villages in Ogwashi-Ukwu include Ikelike,Umu Dei,Azungwu,Agidiase,Agidiehe,Ogbe Akwu,Ishekpe,Ogbe Onicha,Ogbe Ubu,Ogbe Ani and Umu-okwe.
The Delta State Polytechnic,Ogwashi-Uku is one of the three polytechnics in Delta State,Located in Ogwashi-Uku,Nigeria. The polytechnic offers National Diplomas and Higher National Diplomas in Art and Design,Business,Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Victor F. Peretomode is an academic and is the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Delta State University,Abraka,Nigeria. Peretomode was appointed by Delta State governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan on December 1,2014. His tenure as the Vice Chancellor ended on December 1,2019.
