Andy Martin is an American architect and designer based in London. He is the director of Andy Martin Architects and known for his use of natural light, dark space, and playful materials. His work ranges from furniture and product design to restaurant, bar, and residential interior design. He also lectures on architecture and design, serves as a university studio critic, and is a board member for civic institutions and jury awards programs.

Early life and education

Andy Martin was born in Middletown, Connecticut, USA. He studied architecture at the University of Technology and completed his initial training at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London.

Career

Martin moved to Paris in 1992 where he began working with Marc Newson on several interior projects. It was through collaborations on Coast restaurant (London) and Mash & Air (Manchester) that Martin developed his interest in restaurant design. Martin's client on these projects was the restaurateur Oliver Peyton. Martin was appointed as Concept Architect for the flagship Mash 02 restaurant in London.[ citation needed ]

After winning an architectural competition in 1999, he competed against Zaha Hadid. [1] Martin was asked to design the Isola restaurant in London. After the success of this restaurant, Martin formed a new practice, Andy Martin Architects. He designed the Olga Polizzi and William Shawcross residence in West London. Andy Martin Architects designs restaurants and bars around London and has worked on projects in Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, California and Greece. [2]

The World Architecture Festival (WAF) is an annual festival and awards ceremony, one of the most prestigious events dedicated to the architecture and development industries. It is the only event where around 550 shortlisted architects present their projects live in crit rooms to a judging panel. One of these projects is awarded the World Building of the Year title. Rick Mather was an American-born architect working in England. Born in Portland, Oregon and awarded a B.arch. at the University of Oregon in 1961, he came to London in 1963 and worked at the architectural firm Lyons Israel Ellis for two years. He became a leading figure at the Architectural Association in the 1970s, and in 1973 founded his own practice, Rick Mather Architects.

Slade Architecture is a New York City based architecture and design firm founded in 2002 by Hayes and James Slade. The firm has completed a diverse range of domestic and international projects. Its work has been exhibited and published widely. The Architectural League of New York selected Slade Architecture as a winner of its 2010 Emerging Voices, an annual invited competition for North American firms and individuals with distinct design voices and significant bodies of realized work. Slade Architecture was selected by the New York City Department of Design & Construction to participate in its Excellence in Design and Construction Program in 2004, 2006, 2009, and 2016.

Stiff + Trevillion is a London-based architectural practice founded in 1981 by Michael Stiff and Andrew Trevillion. By 2014, the firm had 40 staff members and had worked on over 2,000 projects. Designing both buildings and interiors their work covers the commercial, residential, restaurant and retail sectors, primarily in London but also across the UK and overseas. Some of their projects include the first Wagamama restaurant in 1992 and the first in the chain of Giraffe Restaurants. They have also designed various Italian restaurants for Jamie Oliver. Their residential clients have included Adele and Blur (band) and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn.

Boris Bernaskoni ; is a Russian architect, engineer, publisher, the recipient of various architectural awards and a participant in various architectural exhibitions. He is the founder of the BERNASKONI bureau. Boris Bernaskoni is a founding member of the Urban Council Board at the Skolkovo Innovation Center in Moscow. Boris Bernaskoni first achieved international recognition in 2008 when he won an international competition for the Perm Museum of Modern Art that was juried by Peter Zumthor and had participants like Coop Himmelbau, Zaha Hadid and Asymptote. His Matrex project received high acclaim at the 15th Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2016. In 2019 Bernaskoni participated in several events at the Davos World Economic Forum, talking on transformable architecture in the cities of the future and urban digitalization.
