Angel Cejudo is an American freestyle wrestler who won the Dave Schultz Memorial International freestyle wrestling tournament in the 60 kg (132 lbs) weight class on February 5, 2008. [1] Later that same year he trained with his brother Henry Cejudo in Colorado Springs, who would win an Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Angel Cejudo went 150–0 for Phoenix Maryvale High School in Phoenix, Arizona on the way to four 5A state titles. In 2005, he turned down a scholarship at Arizona State University to work out at the U.S. Olympic Training Center full-time. [2]
Angel Cejudo and his brother Henry earned spots on the 2005 FILA Junior Freestyle World Team. At 60 kg/132 lbs., Angel Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) beat Drew Headlee (Waynesburg, Pa./Pitt WC). In bout one, Angel Cejudo defeated Drew Headlee of Waynesburg, PA by pin in 1:58. In the second bout, Angel Cejudo defeated Drew Headlee by dec. 3–0, 1–0. Angel Cejudo won the series, two matches to none. Angel Cejudo is a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete. [3]
On November 20, 2005 and again wrestling at 60 kg, Angel Cejudo (Sunkist) won 3rd place by defeating by dec. Jason Wichinski (Cabbagetown), 2–0, 4–0. [4]
In 2006, he was ranked ninth in the U.S. Senior freestyle ranking by themat.com at the 60 kg weight class. [5]
In 2007, he failed to qualify for the 2007 U.S. World Team Trials in freestyle wrestling. [6]
In 2008, he won the Dave Schultz Memorial International in the 60 kg weight class. Also in 2008, Angel Cejudo entered the U.S. Olympic trials seeded ninth after not placing in the 2008 U.S. Nationals competing for the 60 kg (132 pounds) weight class. Cejudo went 1–2 at the trials in Las Vegas, eliminated by Nate Gallick from Tucson Sunnyside who finished third. The US team did not do well enough in the 60 kg qualifying tournaments to earn a wildcard into the Competition from FILA, the governing board of international wrestling. [2]
Angel Cejudo states that his wrestling improved on his way to winning the Dave Schultz Memorial International in the 60 kg weight class after his mother moved to Colorado to be with him and his brother. [6] His brother Henry won the Beijing Olympic Gold medal in 2008 for the 55 kg weight class. [2] Angel Cejudo was in attendance with his sister Gloria and brother Alonzo. [7] His mother was sick and unable to make it, for which he broke the explanation to the media that his mother gets nervous and throws up during the matches. [8]

Freestyle wrestling is a style of wrestling. Along with Greco-Roman, it is one of the two styles of wrestling contested in the Olympic Games. American high school wrestling and men's collegiate wrestling are conducted under different rules and termed scholastic and collegiate wrestling. American collegiate women's wrestling is conducted under freestyle rules.
David Lesley Schultz was an American Olympic and World champion freestyle wrestler, and a seven-time World and Olympic medalist. He coached individuals and teams at the college level and also privately.
Sara McMann is an American female mixed martial artist currently signed to Bellator MMA, competing in the Women's Featherweight division. McMann is a former Olympic wrestler and received a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece and was a World Silver Medalist and 2-time Bronze Medalist. She would then transition to MMA, most notably competing in the bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC)
Steve Mocco is an American former amateur wrestler, judoka and mixed martial artist. As a collegiate wrestler, he was a two-time NCAA national champion, four-time finalist, and was awarded the Dan Hodge Trophy. In freestyle, he represented the US at the Olympics and was a three-time Pan American Champion. As an MMA fighter, he most notably competed at the WSOF. He is currently a coach at both combat sports, being one of the main coaches at MMA powerhouse American Top Team and an assistant wrestling coach at Lehigh University.
Samuel "Sammie" Henson is a World Champion wrestler, winning a gold medal in freestyle for the USA at the 1998 FILA Wrestling World Championships, held in Tehran, Iran. He was also a silver medalist at the 2000 Summer Olympics in the freestyle 54 kg category, losing to Abdullayev in the finals of that event, held in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. At the age of 36, he competed at the 2006 FILA Wrestling World Championships held in Guangzhou, China, earning a bronze medal. He was named USA Wrestling's Man of the Year in 1998.
Andy Hrovat is an American former freestyle and folkstyle wrestler. In college, he was a 3-time NCAA wrestling All-American and later wrestled for the U.S. Team in freestyle wrestling at the 2008 Olympic Games.
Clarissa Kyoko Mei Ling Chun (陳美玲) is the head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes Women's wrestling program, formerly, the USA Wrestling assistant National coach and an American Olympic women's freestyle 48 kg (105.5 lbs) wrestler. Chun was the first female wrestler from Hawaii to win a medal at the Olympics. She was inducted into the 2018 Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame and 2022 National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member.
Henry Cejudo is an American professional mixed martial artist and freestyle wrestler. He is a former UFC Flyweight Champion and Bantamweight Champion. He is the fourth UFC fighter to hold titles in two different weight classes simultaneously, and the second to defend titles in two different weight divisions. Cejudo is also the only person to win an Olympic gold medal as a wrestler and a UFC title. He is considered to be among the greatest combat athletes of all time due to his accomplishments in MMA and freestyle wrestling.
Michael Najeeb Zadick is an American former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler. He competed in the Men's freestyle 60 kg division at the 2008 Summer Olympics. He lost in the 1/8 finals to Vasyl Fedoryshyn.
William Michael Zadick is an American amateur wrestler. He won an NCAA college wrestling championship while competing with the University of Iowa and the 2006 World Wrestling Championships in freestyle wrestling.
Spenser Mango is an American Greco-Roman wrestler. He has represented the United States in numerous international competitions including the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, he competed in the 55 kg weight class. He won his first match against Romanian, Virgil Munteanu, before losing the South Korean, Park Eun-chul.
Coleman Scott is a former American wrestler for Sunkist Kids who won the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials and a special Championship Series at 60 kg freestyle to qualify to compete at the 2012 Olympics. He won the bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the men's freestyle 60 kg category. Scott was born in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
Kyle Frederick Snyder is an American freestyle wrestler and graduated folkstyle wrestler who competes at 97 kilograms. He holds the distinctions of being the youngest Olympic Gold medalist and the youngest World Champion in American wrestling history.
Angel Escobedo is an American former folkstyle and freestyle wrestler, and is the head wrestling coach at Indiana University. Escobedo won an NCAA Wrestling championship in 2008 and placed fifth at the World Wrestling Championships in 2013.
Alyssa Rae Nicole Lampe is an American freestyle wrestler. She won bronze medals in the 48 and 51 kg weight classes at the 2012 and 2013 Women's World Championships. She competes with the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club. Lampe has been a member of Team USA from 2009–16 and then returned in 2021–22. She has been a member of the United States's World team a total of five times.
Reece Weslee Humphrey is retired American freestyle wrestler who competed for the men's freestyle 60 kg at the World Wrestling Championships 2013 in Budapest, Hungary. He was eliminated in the quarterfinal rounds, after being defeated by Iran's Masoud Esmaeilpour, based on the decision score 8–9. He is a 3x national USA wrestling champion in 2011, 2013 and 2015. New York athletic club International Open champion 2011. Humphrey is also Indiana high school state champion, Freestyle and Greco-Roman national champion 2x All-American at The Ohio State University In 2015 World Wrestling Championships he won to world bronze medalist Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan, but in second round he lost to Mongolian young wrestling prospect Batboldyn Nomin, Batboldyn reached to the final, in Repechage round 1 Humphrey lost to bronze world medalist Bajrang Punia of India.
Nick Marable of Collierville, Tennessee, is an American former freestyle wrestler for Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club. He represented the United States at the 2014 World Wrestling Championships. Marable later served as the assistant wrestling coach for West Virginia University.
Kyven Ross Gadson is an American amateur wrestler. Currently a senior competitor in amateur freestyle wrestling, earlier Gadson, while wrestling for the Iowa State Cyclones, was a three-time All-American in NCAA Division I collegiate wrestling and won the 2015 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in the 197-lb weight class by pinning future Olympic and World Championship gold medalist Kyle Snyder in his final collegiate match.
David Zabriskie is a retired American amateur wrestler and current wrestling coach for Elevation Fight Team in Denver. Zabriskie wrestled for the Iowa State Cyclones and is a three-time Big 12 Conference champion, three-time All-American in NCAA Division I collegiate wrestling, and won the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in the 285lb weight class in 2010.
