Anisur Rahman (born 31 December 1962) is a Bangladeshi former civil servant and one of the four incumbent Election Commissioners of Bangladesh. [1] [2]
Rahman was born on 31 December 1962 in Shariatpur. He passed SSC from Chandpur Hasan Ali Government High School and HSC from Chandpur Government College and obtained his bachelor's and master's degree from Dhaka University. [3] [4]
Anisur joined the Cadre Service on 15 February 1988 as a member of the 1985 batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Cadre. [3]
During Rahman's career he served in various levels of administration including Assistant Commissioner,Upazila Executive Officer,Additional District Magistrate and various duties in Upazila and District. [3] He held various posts in the Cabinet Department,Local Government Department,Finance Department,Ministry of Home Affairs,Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock. [3]
Rahman was the Secretary of the Ministry of Religious Affairs from April 4,2018 to January 4,2020. He joined the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources as Secretary on 5 January 2020 and has been the Senior Secretary since 27 January 2020. [4] [5] [3]
Rahman retired on 31 December 2021 as Senior Secretary. [6] He was appointed as the Election Commissioner on 26 February 2022. [6]
Divisions are the first-level administrative divisions in Bangladesh. As of 2023,there are eight divisions of Bangladesh,each named after the major city within its jurisdiction that also serves as the administrative seat of that division. Each division is divided into several districts which are further subdivided into upazilas,then union councils.

There are 8 divisions and 64 districts in Bangladesh,each district further subdivided into upazila. The area within each subdistrict,except for those in metropolitan areas,is divided into several unions,with each union consisting of multiple villages. Direct elections are held for each union,electing a chairperson and a number of members. In 1997,a parliamentary act was passed to reserve three seats in every union for female candidates. Following elections in the 2014–16 period,25.2% of councillors were women,up from 23.4% in the 2011–13 period.

Zahangir Alam is a former mayor of Gazipur City Corporation,an Awami League politician and businessman. Aligned with the Bangladesh Awami League,he was elected as the second mayor of the Gazipur City Corporation in July 2018. He was the general secretary of Gazipur metropolitan Awami League until he was expelled by Awami League central working committee on 19 November 2021. Jahangir was pardoned and got back his Awami League Membership on 1 January 2023. The LGRD Ministry suspended Alam on 25 November 2021 from the mayor post of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) on the allegations of illegal land grabbing,not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.
