Anita Thapar CBE FRCPsych FMedSci FLSW is a Welsh child psychiatrist who is Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neuroscience at Cardiff University. Her research focuses on risk factors for ADHD and major depression in children. [1] She was elected a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1995, [2] and of the Academy of Medical Sciences and Learned Society of Wales in 2011. [3] [4] In 2017, she received the Frances Hoggan Medal from the Learned Society of Wales [5] and was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), both in recognition of her research in child and adolescent psychiatry. Education and research

Thapar was born in South Wales and educated at the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff, where she received her MBBCh in 1985. [2] [7] She then worked at district general hospitals in Carmarthen and Swansea to complete her clinical training. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1995. She then worked as a senior lecturer at Manchester University before being appointed Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Cardiff University in 1999, making her the first such professor in Wales. [2] [6] Thapar is currently researching ADHD, autism and genetics. [7]

She is married to a former general practitioner and has two adult sons. [8]

Frances Elizabeth Hoggan was a Welsh doctor and in 1870 became the first woman from the UK to receive a doctorate in medicine from any university in Europe. Child and adolescent psychiatry is a branch of psychiatry that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental disorders in children, adolescents, and their families. It investigates the biopsychosocial factors that influence the development and course of psychiatric disorders and treatment responses to various interventions. Child and adolescent psychiatrists primarily use psychotherapy and/or medication to treat mental disorders in the pediatric population.

Vikram Harshad Patel FMedSci is an Indian psychiatrist and researcher best known for his work on child development and mental disability in low-resource settings. He is the Co-Founder and former Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Co-Director of the Centre for Control of Chronic Conditions at the Public Health Foundation of India, and the Co-Founder of Sangath, an Indian NGO dedicated to research in the areas of child development, adolescent health and mental health. Since 2016 he has been Pershing Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine of Harvard Medical School in Boston. Russell Mardon Viner, FMedSci is an Australian-British paediatrician and policy researcher who is Chief Scientific Advisor at the Department for Education and Professor of Adolescent Health at the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health. He is an expert on child and adolescent health in the UK and internationally. He was a member of the UK Government's Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) during the COVID-19 pandemic and was President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health from 2018 to 2021. He remains clinically active, seeing young people with diabetes each week at UCL Hospitals. Viner is Vice-Chair of the NHS England Transformation Board for Children and Young People and Chair of the Stakeholder Council for the Board. He is a non-executive director (NED) at Great Ormond St. Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust, also sitting on the Trust's Finance & Investment and the Quality and Safety sub-committees.
