Anja Scherl (born 12 April 1986) is a German long distance runner who specialises in the marathon. She competed in the women's marathon event at the 2016 Summer Olympics where she finished in 44th place. [1]
Scherl finished well in the marathon, but her success was overshadowed by Anna and Lisa Hahner who controversially crossed the finishing line together at position 81 and 82. They were accused of trying to attract media attention, and they did get more coverage than Scherl. [2]
In 2007, Anja Scherl was persuaded to take up running by her then boyfriend and later husband, [3] who was also a former marathon runner; she had already jogged occasionally and played volleyball before that. Originally she wanted to start running marathons straight away, but her then coach at DJK Weiden sent her to run middle distances first. [4]
After a year at LAC Quelle Fürth, she moved to PSV Grün-Weiß Kassel in 2012, with whom she won her first medals at German championships as part of the team. After winning the 2012 South German Championships over 5000 meters and a surprising fourth place at the 2012 German Championships over 10 km, [5] made her marathon debut in 2014 at the Hamburg Marathon with a time of 2:48:08 h. In Husum, she became German runner-up in the half-marathon in 2015, and again in Hanover in 2017.
In 2016, Scherl became known to the public through her third place in the Hamburg Marathon and a time of 2:27:50 h, which also meant qualification for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. [5]
Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner who competes in the marathon and formerly specialized in the 5000 metres. Kipchoge is the 2016 and 2020 Olympic marathon champion, and was the world record holder in the marathon from 2018 to 2023, until that record was broken by Kelvin Kiptum at the 2023 Chicago Marathon. Kipchoge has run four of the 10 fastest marathons in history.

At age 37, Kiplagat won the 2017 Boston Marathon in a time of 2:21:52 hours, and won the marathon silver medal at the IAAF World Championships in London. At age 39, she was second at the 2019 Boston Marathon and fourth in the event at the following World Championships. At age 41, she won the 2021 Boston Marathon, becoming the oldest-ever winner of a World Marathon Major.
Florence Jebet Kiplagat is a Kenyan professional long-distance runner. She is a two-time world champion, having won at the 2009 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and the 2010 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. She was the world record holder for the women's half marathon with a time of 1:05:09 hours until it was broken by Peres Jepchirchir on 10 February 2017 at the RAK Half Marathon.

Having switched countries in 2013, she is the Bahraini record holder with 2:21:17 hours for the distance, set in 2017 at Nagoya Women's Marathon. She was the silver medallist in the marathon at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
