Ann K. Covington (born March 5,1942) [2] is a former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Missouri. She was the first woman to hold that position. Covington served on the Supreme Court from 1989 to 2001;in 2001 she joined the large St. Louis,Missouri law firm Bryan Cave. Covington is 1963 graduate of Duke University where she received a Bachelor of Arts in English literature. She received her Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri in 1977. Belva Ann Bennett Lockwood was an American lawyer,politician,educator,and author who was active in the women's rights and women's suffrage movements. She was one of the first women lawyers in the United States,and in 1879 she became the first woman to be admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court. Lockwood ran for president in 1884 and 1888 on the ticket of the National Equal Rights Party and was the first woman to appear on official ballots. While Victoria Woodhull is commonly cited as the first woman to run for president,she was not old enough to run,unlike Lockwood.
Yvonne Kauger is an associate justice of the Oklahoma Supreme Court,and was appointed to the Court's District 4 seat by Governor George Nigh in 1984,and served as chief justice from 1997 to 1998. She was born in New Cordell,Oklahoma,and grew up in Colony,Oklahoma,and is an honorary member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes of Oklahoma.
