John Charles Holstein [3] (born January 10,1945) is a former judge of the Supreme Court of Missouri,under an appointment by then-Governor John Ashcroft. From 1995 to 1997,he served as chief justice for the court. In 2002 he retired from the court and returned to private practice in Springfield,Missouri. Judge Holstein received his B.A. in Political Science from Southwest Missouri State University in 1967,and his law degree from the University of Missouri School of Law in 1970.

He was a Democrat who was named to the Supreme Court of the United States in 1940 after a political career that included serving as United States Attorney General,35th Governor of Michigan,and Mayor of Detroit. During his brief tenure on the Warren Court,Whittaker emerged as a swing vote. In 1962,he had a nervous breakdown and resigned from the Court. After leaving the Supreme Court,he served as chief counsel to General Motors and frequently criticized the Civil Rights Movement and the Warren Court.
