Anne-Beatrice Kihara is a Kenyan physician and professor who is President of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. She has dedicated her career to improving the physical health of women across Africa.

Early life and education

Kihara grew up in Kenya. [1] She became interested in medicine whilst helping her father, Dickson Kihara Nyaga, who was a public health officer. [2] She was a medical student at the University of Nairobi, where she had an unplanned pregnancy. [2] At the age of twenty one she was forced to repeat the year, and eventually had to complete her medical degree as a single mother.[ citation needed ] After completing her medical degree, she worked as a gynaecologist in Nairobi. She established maternity facilities and a village hospital. [3] She worked to empower local young women by providing them access to work. [1]

Research and career

In 2013, Kihara was made president of the Kenya Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society. [1] [3] She worked to prevent maternal and child deaths and to eliminate the parent-to-child transmission of sexually transmitted infections, including syphilis and HIV. In 2020, she was made President of the African Federation of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. [3]

In 2023, Kihara became the President of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. [4] She was their first president from Sub-Saharan Africa. She worked to promote women's leadership and involvement in policymaking as well as how to improve access to contraception and health information. She has said that she will focus on transforming the experiences of young women who suffer from child marriages and female genital mutilation. [1] She has promoted the adoption of the Maputo Protocol, which promotes gender equality and gender rights. [5]

The choriocarcinoma can metastasize to other organs, including the lungs, kidney, and liver. The amount and degree of choriocarcinoma spread to other parts of the body can vary greatly from person to person.

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Pakistan (SOGP) is a professional medical association formed by practitioners of obstetrics and gynecology in Pakistan. A member of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO), the body was established in 1957 and is among the oldest specialist professional bodies. When Prof. H.Dewattleville, the President of FIGO at that time, visited Karachi, he addressed staff and students at the Dow Medical College and members of the Pakistan Medical Council and stressed the need for such an organisation in the country. Bhalchandra Nilkanth Purandare, was an Indian gynaecologist. He was the son of Dr. Nilkanth Anant Purandare. He was the director of the Dr. N.A. Purandare Medical Centre for Family Welfare and Research, Mumbai. He served as the president of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) from 1973 to 1976 and the Mumbai Obstetric and Gynecological Society (MOGS) from 1966 to 1968. He was an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (1961). The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1972, for his contributions to medicine. His brother Dr. Vithal N. Purandare was also an acclaimed obstetrician and gynaecologist, renowned for his surgical prowess. He served as President of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynecology society(1973–1975) and FOGSI President in 1981. Their nephew Dr. C. N. Uterine balloon tamponade (UBT) is a non-surgical method of treating refractory postpartum hemorrhage. Once postpartum hemorrhage has been identified and medical management given, UBT may be employed to tamponade uterine bleeding without the need to pursue operative intervention. Numerous studies have supported the efficacy of UBT as a means of managing refractory postpartum hemorrhage. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend UBT as second-line treatment for severe postpartum hemorrhage.
