Anthony Kelly (born May 30, 1980) is a retired professional lacrosse player that played on the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the MLL (Major League Lacrosse). He has also played for the Rochester Knighthawks and New York Titans in the NLL, the Kentucky Stickhorses in the NALL, and the Los Angeles Riptide, Chicago Machine, Rochester Rattlers, Ohio Machine, and Denver Outlaws of the MLL. He is a faceoff specialist and won a Bronze Medal with U.S. Men's National Indoor Team in 2007. He retired in April 2018.

Biography

Early life

Anthony Kelly was born in North Olmsted, Ohio, on May 30, 1980, to Mike and Linda Kelly. Kelly played for St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, Ohio, under Ed Aghajanian.

College career

Kelly played at Lacrosse for The Ohio State University for coach Joe Breschi. He had a fantastic college career. Some of his key college accomplishments include:

Kelly graduated in 2003 and went on to become the head coach at Hilliard Davidson High School in Hilliard, Ohio – a suburb of Columbus, until the 2007 season.

Professional career

Kelly's professional career started in 2005 with the Minnesota Swarm of the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He was also drafted in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) supplemental draft that same year by the Los Angeles Riptide. Kelly was named L.A.’s “Newcomer of the Year” by US Lacrosse Magazine and lead L.A. to a #2 Ranking in face-off wins for the 2006 season. Anthony remained with the Riptide in 2007 and enjoyed a great year with 169 face offs won, a career high 62 ground balls, and 6 points. In 2008 Kelly won 184 faceoffs for the Riptide and was selected to participate in his first MLL All Star Game and skills competition. He won the fastest shot competition with a shot clocked at 109 mph (175.4 km/h). [1]

When the LA Riptide dissolved in 2009, Kelly was picked up by the Chicago Machine where he played two seasons. He was transferred to the Rochester Rattlers for the 2011 season and then was picked up by the new expansion team the Ohio Machine in 2012. After 8 games with the Ohio Machine Kelly was traded to the Denver Outlaws for the rest of the 2012 MLL season. [3] As a key face off man for Denver, Kelly won 87–149 face offs in 5 games, with a face off win percentage of 58.4%. He helped the Outlaws advance to the MLL Championship to play for the Steinfeld Cup, where they were eventually defeated by the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Kelly returned with the Outlaws in 2013 and helped them to the first perfect regular season in MLL history. The Outlaws went 14–0 as Anthony won 195 face offs, picked up 59 ground balls, and scored 5 goals. Kelly played 12 games with the Outlaws in 2014 and collected a career high 63 ground ball pickups, despite missing the last two games of the regular season due to injury. He won a total of 159-303 faceoffs in the 2014 regular season and went 14–25 in the final playoff game to help the Outlaws win the 2014 MLL Championship. [1] 2015 was another great year for Kelly as he won 169-298 (56.7%) face offs for the Denver.

In 2016, his 9th season in the MLL, Kelly was traded to the Chesapeake Bayhawks to fill the role of face off specialist. [4]

Awards and honors

Personal info

Anthony is the Midwest Sales Manager for STX. He co-founded Resolute Lacrosse in 2009 with his former Ohio State lacrosse teammate and friend, Greg Bice. They are also Co-owners/Operators of The Resolute Athletic Complex, a 74,000 square foot indoor complex with 3 turf fields, a weight room, and training space. He enjoys coaching for Resolute, hunting with his Dad and brother at their family cabin, and playing ice hockey as much as possible in his free time. Anthony has an Education Degree from the Ohio State University where he graduated in 2003. Anthony also coached lacrosse collegiately for Denison University (2004), Harvard University (2008) and The Ohio State University (2009). [10]

Major League Lacrosse (MLL) was a men's field lacrosse league in the United States. The league's inaugural season was in 2001. Teams played anywhere from ten to 16 games in a summertime regular season. They were the Bridgeport Barrage from 2001 to 2003 at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The team then relocated to Philadelphia from the 2004 season to the 2007 season when they became a traveling team for 2008. They ceased operations before the 2009 season due to the economic situation in the United States. The Philadelphia Barrage were resurrected for the 2020 season.

Denver Outlaws

The Denver Outlaws were a Major League Lacrosse professional men's field lacrosse team based in Denver, Colorado, United States. They began playing in the MLL in 2006 as an expansion team.

Kyle Harrison is an American retired professional lacrosse player from Baltimore, Maryland. Currently, he serves as the PLL Director of Player Relations and Diversity Inclusion. He had 17-year career in professional field lacrosse and played for the United States national lacrosse team twice. As a professional lacrosse player, he is a 9-time all-star and won the 2017 championship. As a college lacrosse player, he played at Johns Hopkins University and was co-captain on the team that went undefeated (16-0) to win the 2005 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. The same year, he was the 2005 Tewaaraton Men's Player of the Year Award recipient. In 2016, he was inducted into the Johns Hopkins University Athletics Hall of Fame. Overall, he has had a illustrious career and has been a visible role model for many players, and has continued to be an ambassador for the sport of lacrosse at large. Kyle Harrison is one of the most recognizable lacrosse players of all time and widely considered to be a lacrosse legend.

Joshua S. Sims is an American former professional lacrosse player. He played in Major League Lacrosse through 2013 and last played box lacrosse in the National Lacrosse League with the Philadelphia Wings in 2010. He starred as a member of the Princeton Tigers men's lacrosse team from 1997 through 2000. He is a two-time NCAA champion, three-time MLL champion, and one-time NLL champion.

Gregory Lawrence Bice is an American lacrosse player who wears number 44 for the Ohio Machine in Major League Lacrosse. He typically plays as a long pole defenseman, but can also be used as a midfielder (middy).

Steven Brooks is a professional lacrosse player that retired from the Atlas LC (PLL) of Premier Lacrosse League in 2019. Brooks was the 6th overall draft pick in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft by the Chicago Machine. He played high school lacrosse for Libertyville High School in Libertyville, Illinois. He also attended a postgraduate year at Bridgton Academy. Brooks played college lacrosse at Syracuse University. In January 2020, Brooks was named assistant coach of the Atlas LC (PLL) in the professional lacrosse league PLL. He is the first ever PLL player turned coach in the league's history.

The 2016 Major League Lacrosse season was the 16th season of Major League Lacrosse. The season featured 9 teams after the addition of the Atlanta Blaze via expansion. It was the first season since 2008 that the league fielded more than eight teams. The defending champion New York Lizards are coming off their third Steinfeld Cup victory in franchise history and first since 2003 after defeating the Rochester Rattlers 15–12 August 8, 2015 at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw, Georgia. However, the league announced on November 16, 2017 that the Rochester Rattlers, one of the league's four remaining charter franchises, would relocate to Frisco, Texas and become the Dallas Rattlers. The reigning champions for the first time are the Ohio Machine, who would take a hard fall and finish 3-11 in 2018. The season culminated on Saturday, August 18 with the Denver Outlaws hoisting their third Steinfeld Trophy in Charleston, South Carolina at MUSC Health Stadium after defeating the Rattlers, 16-12.

Myles Jones, is an American professional lacrosse player with Redwoods Lacrosse Club of the Premier Lacrosse League and the New York Riptide of the National Lacrosse League. He attended Walt Whitman High School in Huntington Station, New York, completed a post-graduate year at Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut and played collegiate lacrosse at Duke University.

The 2019 Major League Lacrosse season was the 19th season of Major League Lacrosse. The regular season began on Friday, May 31 and ended on Sunday, September 22. It was the first time the league would ever begin its season after Memorial Day, allowing all players selected in the collegiate draft to play a full season. 2019 also marks the first time each team would play 16 games. The league has played a 14-game schedule since 2012. Additionally, the league returned to a Championship Weekend format instead of a two-week postseason for the first time since 2013. Championship Weekend was hosted in Denver with two semifinal games on Friday, October 4 and the 19th Steinfeld Cup was hosted at Dick's Sporting Goods Park October 6 on ESPN2.

The 2019 Chesapeake Bayhawks season is the nineteenth season for the Bayhawks franchise of Major League Lacrosse, and tenth season using the 'Chesapeake' Bayhawks moniker. It is Dave Cottle's second season of his second tenure as head coach of the team. In 2018, Cottle led the Bayhawks to their first playoff appearance in five years.

The 2019 Denver Outlaws season was the fourteenth season for the Outlaws franchise of Major League Lacrosse. It was also the first season under head coach Tony Seaman, who previously served as general manager before B.J. O'Hara took the head coaching job for the New York Lizards. The Denver Outlaws had a very strong team, having 7 players go to the All Star game.

The 2020 Major League Lacrosse season was the 20th season of Major League Lacrosse. Each of the six teams were slated to play a ten-game regular season starting on May 30, until the COVID-19 pandemic suspended the season. On July 2, the league announced teams would play a five-game regular season over the course of a quarantined week in Annapolis, Maryland at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, the home of the Chesapeake Bayhawks. The regular season was scheduled to begin play on Saturday, July 18 with a four-team postseason the next weekend on July 25–26.
