The Antigua Broadcasting Service (ABS) [1] is the state-owned broadcaster of Antigua and Barbuda. It operates one radio station and one television channel, the latter being the country's only channel, outside of cable. [2]

History

Radio arrived to Antigua and Barbuda in the 1940s but was limited to relays of external services, the BBC World Service and the Voice of America. At the time, few people could afford to buy a radio. [3] ABS started radio broadcasts in June 1962, useful for disseminating emergency information. [4]

Television started with ZAL-TV, channel 10, in 1965. A private company at the outset, it had a predominantly expatriate staff in its early years, and had an affiliation agreement with a television station in Bermuda. It also had a transmitted in Montserrat, a British overseas territory, on channel 7. [5] In the mid-1970s, facing financial problems, ZAL-TV was acquired by ABS and subsequently nationalised. [3] By then ABS-TV added a second transmitter in the Dutch territory of Sint-Maarten (on channel 8). [6]

In May 2024, ABS received equipment donations from China's CMG. [7] The deals with CMG have been scrutinised because of the PRC's regime's stance on media control, causing concern from some people. [8] In December 2024, ABS announced the possibility of setting up a bureau in the island of Barbuda and expand the extant facilities in the island of Antigua. [9]

His characteristic style as a broadcaster is to conduct biting interviews; one commentator refers to "the persistent journalistic exploits of a resurgent, sharp-witted and emphatic Julian Rogers".

The ABS-CBN Broadcasting Center in Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines is the headquarters of the Philippine media conglomerate ABS-CBN Corporation and the former television network of the same name. It houses the media conglomerate's and former network's divisions such as ABS-CBN News, ABS-CBN Studios and subsidiaries, broadcast facilities, offices, and ELJ Communications Center. It is also where the transmitter site of All TV is situated which was previously used by ABS-CBN before it became inactive due to the 2020 broadcast franchise renewal dispute with ownership of the transmitter and the land where it stands remain with the network. It occupies an area of 44,000 square meters including the ELJ Communications Center. It was originally built in 1968 and was then the most advanced broadcast facility in Asia. Meanwhile, ABS-CBN's production facility is located at ABS-CBN Horizon IT Park in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan.

However, the domestic flight industry is usually dominated by small airlines like BMN Air. Antigua and Barbuda also has a significant military aviation sector, being one of the only countries in the Caribbean to maintain an air force.

Antigua Barbuda Global Music & Media Awards (ABGMA) is an annual event in Antigua and Barbuda established by So Arise Music International in 2014, to celebrate and award talent in music and media. The festival promotes artistic excellence, community contributions, and cultural enrichment in Antigua and Barbuda and the region by extension.
