On March 26, 2024, in Antipas, Cotabato, Philippines, a highway collision between a dump truck transporting sand and a passenger van occurred killing seventeen and injuring one with the van catching fire. [1]

Accident

The accident took place around noon at the national highway in Barangay Lohong in the municipality of Antipas. [2] A Toyota Hiace commuter van heading for Kidapawan was hit by a dump truck carrying gravel that was heading for Antipas town proper while going downhill [3] [4] at high speed. The passenger van flipped, rolled over and plunged into the ditch along the highway and caught fire. The truck capsized and also caught fire around six meters away from the van. [5]

Of the 18 passengers on the van, only one person survived and was rushed to hospital. The three people aboard the truck were also hospitalized. [6]

Aftermath

Identifying the burned cadavers was difficult. As of March 26 at 4pm only seven cadavers were identified. [2]

The local government unit expressed their condolences and sadness, and called to offer prayers for the victims; it also stated it worked on providing the necessary assistance and support for the involved families. [2] The government released a total of P25,000 in aid to the families of the victims. [7]

The Antipas Municipal Police Station and the Antipas Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office are investigating the accident. [2]

MV <i>Doña Paz</i> Ship involved in deadliest peacetime maritime disaster

MV Doña Paz was a Japanese-built and Philippine-registered passenger ferry that sank after it collided with the oil tanker Vector on December 20, 1987. Built by Onomichi Zosen of Hiroshima, Japan, the ship was launched on April 25, 1963 as the Himeyuri Maru with a passenger capacity of 608. On April 13, 2014, shortly after midnight, a bus traveling from Villahermosa to Mexico City collided with a broken-down truck and caught fire, killing at least 36 people, all of whom were businesspeople from the Veracruz region. There were four survivors. The collision took place near the municipality of Juan Rodriguez Clara, which is itself near Acayucan. The bus was owned by a car-rental company called "Turtle", and the truck was owned by a milk protein company called "Prolat". The truck had been on the shoulder of the highway prior to being hit by the bus. Javier Duarte, the governor of Veracruz, said that because the bus caught fire, it will be much more difficult to identify the victims' bodies. A Veracruz Civil Defense Agency official said the victims probably burned to death inside the bus.

For three days from March 30, 2016, thousands of farmers and their supporters blockaded the Davao–Cotabato Road in Kidapawan, North Cotabato, in the Philippines. A day before prior to the road blockade, 500 farmers protested in front of the National Food Authority Office in Kidapawan to air their grievances. The demonstration ended violently with at least three deaths on the side of the protesters and a total of 116 injured on both sides after the police dispersed the mass action.

On June 27, 2022, the Southwest Chief, a passenger train operated by Amtrak, derailed near the small town of Mendon, Missouri. The derailment was caused by the train striking a dump truck that was obstructing the crossing of County Road 113, about three miles (4.8 km) southwest of Mendon. Four people were killed in the wreck: three passengers on board the train and the truck driver, with up to 150 people injured.
