Auguste Antoine Joseph Payen (12 November 1792 - 18 January 1853), also known as Antoine Payen the Younger, was a Belgian painter and naturalist. He was born in Brussels and died in Tournai. His father, Antoine Payen the Elder, was an architect.

Payen was commissioned by Dutch King William I to create a series of paintings of the landscape of the Dutch East Indies. [2] One of these works, The Great Postal Route near Rejapolah, painted in 1828, hangs in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. [1]

While in the Dutch East Indies in 1819, Payen met an eight-year-old Raden Saleh and, recognizing his talent for drawing, became Saleh's first mentor. Saleh would follow Payen to Europe three years after Payen's departure from Java in 1826. [2]

Johannes Rach

Johannes Rach was a Danish painter and draughtsman whose works from Copenhagen and Indonesia are a valuable source of architectural and cultural historic knowledge. He began his artistic career painting topographical views for the royal court in Copenhagen, mosrlt in close collaboration with Hans Heinrich Eegberg without any clear indication of who painted whatm and credits are therefore often given to Rach & Eegberg. Later he traveled to the Dutch East Indies, by way of Saint Petersburg and the Netherlands, where he settled in Batavia, and had a military career in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army. At the same time he continued to pursue his artistic work with considerable commercial success. He set up a large studio with local employees who worked in his style, and produced depictions of the city and surrounding countryside for the local elite.

Taman Ismail Marzuki complex comprises a number of facilities including six performing arts theaters, cinemas, exhibition hall, gallery, libraries and an archive building. The complex is built on an 9 hectares land area, which was previously a zoo. TIM is named after Ismail Marzuki, one of Indonesia's most influential composers.

Josias Cornelis Rappard

Josias Cornelis Rappard was a Dutch soldier and artist. Some of his paintings were made into lithographs and illustrations.

Kyai Ngabei Kertoboso Bustam or Kyai Bustaman (?1681–1769) was a VOC secretary in Semarang, Dutch East Indies. He originally came from Hadramaut, Yemen. Kyai Ngabehi Kertoboso Bustam is the ancestor of the Bustaman clan who later produced regents and priyayis in the northern coast of Java, including the famous Romantic painter Raden Saleh. Kampung Bustaman in Semarang City was named after him, although only a few of his descendants remain in Semarang.

Indonesian painting

Indonesian painting has a very long tradition and history in Indonesian art, though because of the climatic conditions very few early examples survive, Indonesia is home to some of the oldest paintings in the world. The earliest Indonesian paintings were the rock paintings of prehistoric times, such as the petroglyphs found in places like in the caves in the district of Maros in Sulawesi, Indonesia. The Stone Age rock paintings found in Maros Cave are approximately 40,000 years old and are listed as one of the oldest paintings in the world.

Abdullah bin Alwi Alatas

Sayyid Abdullah bin Alwi Alatas was a Dutch East Indies merchant, landlord, and philanthropist of Arab descent from the Ba 'Alawi sada clan. Alatas is also the owner of the Cikini House after it was bought from Raden Saleh. He also inherited another eccentric house, such as a house built by a Frenchman in an Islamic style.
