Anup Kaphle

Anup Kaphle is a Nepali journalist who is currently the editor-in-chief of Rest of World, an online publication that focuses on technology. [1] Kaphle has previously worked for The Atlantic , [2] The Washington Post , [3] Buzzfeed News [4] and has led The Kathmandu Post as editor-in-chief. [5]

Early life and education

Kaphle grew up in the Nepali city of Pokhara. [6] He moved to the capital city of Kathmandu, where he interned at The Himalayan Times in 2003. [7] Later that year, Kaphle moved to the United States to pursue an undergraduate degree at Tusculum University in Tennessee. [8] After graduating in 2007 with a degree in English, Kaphle went on to attend the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York City. [9] He is also a graduate of the Bard Globalization and International Affairs Program in New York City. [10]

Career

During his time at Tusculum, Kaphle interned for Newsweek and Forbes.com. [10] After graduating from Columbia University, Kaphle worked for News21 in Arizona [11] before going to work as a digital media fellow at The Atlantic in 2008. [2] As a correspondent for The Atlantic, Kaphle reported from Afghanistan [12] and Nepal. [13]

In 2009, Kaphle left The Atlantic for The Washington Post, where he initially worked as an online producer. [14] After three years, in 2011, Kaphle was promoted digital foreign editor at the Post. [3] He remained in the position until April 2015. Kaphle then moved to London as deputy foreign editor at Buzzfeed News. [4]

In March 2018, Kaphle was named executive editor of the digital food and travel publication Roads & Kingdoms . [15] Kaphle left the publication in 2018 to move back to his home country of Nepal to lead The Kathmandu Post. [5]

Kaphle resigned in February 2020 to move back to the United States. [16] [17] He is currently executive editor of Rest of World, [1] a non-profit digital publication founded by Sophie Schmidt, [18] an entrepreneur and daughter of Eric Schmidt, former executive chairman of Google.

<i>Gorkhapatra</i> State-run daily newspaper of Nepal

Gorkhapatra is the oldest Nepali language state-owned national daily newspaper of Nepal. It was started as a weekly newspaper in May 1901 and became a daily newspaper in 1961. It is managed by the Gorkhapatra Sansthan. The Rising Nepal is the sister newspaper of Gorkhapatra in English language.

Radio Kantipur or Kantipur FM is a Nepalese FM radio station, established in October 1998. It currently operates in the eastern, central, western, mid-western and far-western development regions. It is most popular in eastern region and in Kathmandu. It provides news and entertainment programs 24 hours a day. Kantipur is a Nepali language daily newspaper, published from Kathmandu, Biratnagar, Nepalgunj, and Bharatpur of Nepal simultaneously. It was founded by Shyam Goenka. Kantipur's publishers report that the circulation of this newspaper is just above 453,000 copies per day. It is regarded as the most widely read newspaper in Nepal; according to an audience survey in 2016, over half of those who read newspapers in Nepal were readers of Kantipur, considerably more than any other newspapers. The newspaper is also a source of information of homeland for Nepali diaspora.

<i>The Kathmandu Post</i> English-language newspaper in Nepal

The Kathmandu Post is a major daily newspaper published in Nepal. Founded in February 1993 by Shyam Goenka, it is one of the largest English-language newspapers in the country. The newspaper is independently owned and published by Kantipur Publications, the owners of Nepal's largest selling newspaper, the Nepali-language Kantipur. Post is a member of the Asia News Network, an alliance of nineteen Asian newspapers. The Kathmandu Post is Nepal's first privately owned English broadsheet daily, and is Nepal's largest selling English language newspaper, with a daily circulation of 95,000 copies.

The 2021 Nepal Super League was the first season of the Nepal Super League, the first professional franchise based club football league of Nepal. A total of seven franchises participated in the tournament played at the Dasharath Rangasala from 24 April to 15 May 2021. Kathmandu Rayzrs won the title after beating Dhangadhi FC in the final on 15 May 2021.

Municipal election for Pokhara took place on 13 May 2022, with all 167 positions up for election across 33 wards. The electorate elected a mayor, a deputy mayor, 33 ward chairs and 132 ward members. An indirect election will also be held to elect five female members and an additional three female members from the Dalit and minority community to the municipal executive.

The Second Federal Parliament of Nepal, was elected by the 2022 general elections on 20 November 2022. The elections elected 275 Members of Parliament (MPs), 165 for each constituency and 110 through the party list, to the House of Representatives. The parliament convened for the first time on 9 January 2023.
