Anurupa Roy is an Indian puppeteer, puppet designer and director of puppet theater. [1] [2] [3] Roy views puppetry as not "manipulating dolls with strings" [4] but an amalgam of plastic and performing arts where sculptures, masks, figures, materials, found objects and narratives come together with music, movement, physicality and theater to create the theater where humans and puppets are co actors. [5] She started at her group Katkatha in 1998 which was registered as the Katkatha Puppet Arts Trust 2006. [6] She has directed over 15 shows for children and adults ranging from the Ramayana and Mahabharata to Shakespearean comedy to the Humayun-nama. The puppets used by the group range from three inches to forty feet in size. The shows have toured across Europe, Japan and South Asia. [7] [8] A major aspect of her work is using puppets for psychosocial interventions in conflict areas like Kashmir, Sri Lanka and Manipur to Juvenile Remand homes. She has worked with youth and women across the country using puppets to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and gender issues. She is a recipient of the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar ine Puppetry (2006). She has been a visiting faculty at the University of California Los Angeles an Artists in Residence at Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council. [9] [2] [4]

Research fellowship at Institute International de la Marionette Charleville- Mezeires, in France in the area of "Evolution of European Puppetry in the 19th and 20th century and the influences of the East" Collaborative Performance Grant 2006 – India Foundation for the Arts – From India Foundation for the Arts for puppetry and animation to create About Ram. Fellow of Peace – WISCOMP for 2005– For working on a puppetry for healing project in the village of Beejbehara in Kashmir. This project entailed three trauma therapy workshops spread over seven months using puppet, mask and theatre exercises, and storytelling. The project aimed to reclaim folklore and oral tradition relating to the syncretic culture of Kashmir with the young women of Beejbehara. The stories collected from Kashmiri women from varied backgrounds and the folklore collected from the Beejbehara were then woven into a performance titled "The Kashmir Project" which brings back Lal Ded the Sufi poet from the 14th century to journey once again through Kashmir as the witness to the present day conflict and the symbol of possible healing.
UCLA APPEX – Asia Pacific Performing Artists fellowship 2004 to participate in an artists collaborative workshop in Bali, Indonesia, for 2 months and collaborate with 15 other artists from the Asia-Pacific region. This workshop was a University of California, Dept of Performing Arts initiative to enable experiments with other performing artists and to start a dialogue between the artists within Asia and with American artists. The performing artists were from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, India, the Philippines and the US.
2013– Workshop with youth in conflict zone Manipur- Churachandpur-(with NGO Standing Together to Enable Peace STEP) Puppetry workshop with youth from different tribes in Churachandpur district to create inter tribe dialogue and understanding. The workshop engaged with youth from Paythei, Naga and Kuki backgrounds who have been involved in conflicts with each other in Manipur for 22 years. The workshop aimed at using the arts to open dialogue and question stereotypes about each other. The youth created a giant puppet performance at the end of the workshop which has been performed for over 2000 people in the district. Sri Lanka – With Peace Development Institute – Sri Lanka – PDI-SL -Workshop with Tamil, Muslim and Sinhalese youth leaders to explore ideas of arts and peace building. The six-day workshop also trained these youth leaders to become change makers in their own community by training to do puppeteer based interventions in their own community.
2012 – Sri Lanka – With Peace Development Institute- Sri Lanka- PDI-SL Workshop with clinical psychologists and community workers- Conducted art based interventions using masks, drama, puppets and the systems of archetypes, power and status and cycles of violence. These workshops were conducted in partnership with drama therapist Vikramjeet Sinha. 2011 – Puppet interventions in Juvenile remand homes in Delhi where puppets were used to do process work with youth and change behaviour. The project lasted four months.(with NGO Standing Together to Enable Peace STEP) 2013 – Gender, Youth and Identity – with PRAVAH a youth-based NGO-created gender- and identity-based shows especially post the Delhi gang rape and the reaction to the same. The show is now a YouTube film and teaching aid for gender workers who want to open discussion on complex gender issues. 2011 – Mujhe bhi gino – Count me in – Initiated by the NGO CREA this project was traveling performance which traveled through rural Jharkhand and UP on a truck to 40 villages and challenged the behavior of favoring the male child and the exclusion of women in the socio political lives of the country. 2000–2006 – Almost 12th Night and Her Voice – Are Katkatha's two shows that question gender stereotypes, the former does this by re-looking at Shakespeare's play Twelfth night and the latter re looks at the Indian classic Mahabharata from the woman's point of view Consultant PLAN-India – For a HIV and AIDS Awareness Package (HAAP), a 14-month project which started in February 2006 with the intention of working with HIV-infected and -affected children and children who are in a high-risk group in 5 high prevalent states of India to create awareness and finally create an awareness and stigma-reduction package which will be by children and for children. The package uses stories created by children using puppets to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS and raise issues of Stigma and Discrimination. 2004 – Virus Ka Tamashah – Show based on Stigma in HIV/AIDS- This show has completed 200 shows and has been performed for over 50,000 people at stadia, parks, bus stops, schools, colleges, festivals etc.

Festival Co-ordinator for Putul Yatra Mumbai-2005 National Puppet Theatre Festival organized by Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi. This was a national festival organized to coincide with the World Puppet Day by the Government body of the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Jurist at the Prix Danube, Bratislava Slovak Republic– International Youth and Children's Film Festival. September 2003 – she was a jurist at the International Film Festival for Youth and Children in Bratislava the capital of the Slovak Republic. A seven-day event featuring 80 films from over 30 countries, in the categories of animation, documentary, fiction and magazine.
Puppetry is a form of theatre or performance that involves the manipulation of puppets – inanimate objects, often resembling some type of human or animal figure, that are animated or manipulated by a human called a puppeteer. Such a performance is also known as a puppet production. The script for a puppet production is called a puppet play. Puppeteers use movements from hands and arms to control devices such as rods or strings to move the body, head, limbs, and in some cases the mouth and eyes of the puppet. The puppeteer sometimes speaks in the voice of the character of the puppet, while at other times they perform to a recorded soundtrack.
Bunraku is a form of traditional Japanese puppet theatre, founded in Osaka in the beginning of the 17th century, which is still performed in the modern day. Three kinds of performers take part in a bunraku performance: the Ningyōtsukai or Ningyōzukai (puppeteers), the tayū (chanters), and shamisen musicians. Occasionally other instruments such as taiko drums will be used. The combination of chanting and shamisen playing is called jōruri and the Japanese word for puppet is ningyō. It is used in many plays.
Shadow play, also known as shadow puppetry, is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment which uses flat articulated cut-out figures which are held between a source of light and a translucent screen or scrim. The cut-out shapes of the puppets sometimes include translucent color or other types of detailing. Various effects can be achieved by moving both the puppets and the light source. A talented puppeteer can make the figures appear to walk, dance, fight, nod and laugh.

Togalu gombeyaata is a puppet show unique to the state of Karnataka, India. Togalu gombeyaata translates to "a play of leather dolls" in the native language of Kannada. It is a form of shadow puppetry. Karnataka Chitrakala Parishat has undertaken research on this art and has a good collection of leather puppets.
Spiral Q Puppet Theater is a puppet troupe founded in 1995 by Matthew "Mattyboy" Hart in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After traveling the country, Hart was inspired by the street performance work of the Radical Faeries and the Bread and Puppet Theater in Glover, Vermont. On his return to Philadelphia, Hart founded Spiral Q as a way to use his new interest in puppetry, street theatre and pageantry to promote social and political change.

Nikolai Zykov is a Soviet and Russian actor, director, artist, designer, puppet-maker, and master puppeteer.
Sue Hastings was an American puppeteer known for popularizing the ancient art of puppetry in the 1930s and 1940s. She was a protégé of famous advertising artist and master puppeteer Tony Sarg. She was known as a society hostess and for performing with her large collection of professionally made marionettes, which she created with the assistance of her large team of artisan puppeteers. Her many renowned performing companies were headquartered in New York City, New York, USA. During the height of her career, as owner and CEO of Sue Hastings Marionettes, Inc., she reputedly, in her inimitable "hands-on" style, was actively and very successfully directing over 50 performing companies, some of which performed worldwide for heads of Royalty, such as Queen Elizabeth I, and many other dignitaries and distinguished national and international diplomats and world leaders.

Kenya Institute of Puppet Theatre also known as KIPT is a Kenyan non-governmental and non-profit technical advisory and management community based theatre institute, which was founded in 2007.
Suresh Dutta is an Indian puppet artist, theatre personality and the founder of Calcutta Puppet Theatre, a Kolkata-based theatre group dedicated to puppetry. Born in Faridpur, in the undivided Bengal of the British India, he trained art under Phani Bhushan, a Jatra exponent, and Kathakali under Balakrishna Menon. He has also learnt fusion style of danceform from maestro Uday Shankar. He also learnt Bharatanatyam and Manipuri before moving to Russia, under a scholarship in 1962, to train in puppetry under the Russian puppeteer, Sergey Obraztsov.
The Delhi International Queer Theater and Film Festival (DIQTFF), is a queer cultural festival curating films, plays, talks and performances. It is organised by a queer collective in Delhi called Harmless Hugs. The film festival is intended to connect with larger diaspora of the Indian LGBTQ struggle for equal human rights and to reach out to masses via omnipotence of Media, Theatre and Cinema. Movie screenings and plays are well complemented by a round of panel discussions and debates, including some of the biggest names from the Indian LGBTQ Movement. Discussions around tumultuous territories of politics, gender disparity, coming out and involvement of families and more will also be a part of this two-day event, that is happening every December since its initiation in 2015.
Amelia Lirag Lapeña-Bonifacio was a Filipino playwright, puppeteer, and educator known as the "Grande Dame of Southeast Asian Children's Theatre". In 1977, she founded a children's theater troupe, Teatrong Mulat ng Pilipinas, the official theater company and puppetry troupe of the University of the Philippines. Lapeña-Bonifacio served as the President of the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People-Philippines (ASSITEJ-Philippines) and Union Internationale de la Marionnette-Philippines (UNIMA-Philippines). She was recognized in 2018 as a National Artist of the Philippines for Theater.
In the late 1980s, the African Research and Educational Puppetry Program (AREPP) founded "Puppets Against AIDS", a traveling puppet show that visited African villages and cities to encourage audience members to use condoms to prevent HIV/AIDS transmission.
Animal Cracker Conspiracy Puppet Company, or Animal Cracker Conspiracy (ACC), is a contemporary hybrid puppet company co-founded by Iain Gunn and Bridget Rountree that is invested in pushing the boundaries of kinetic performance, creating performances that "decenter expectations, open new avenues of thought, and invoke the uncanny." Their ongoing practice is based on a shared interest and exploration of where fine art, puppetry, performance art, circus, dance, film, and mixed media intersect. They perform nationally and internationally out of a multiplicity of venues such as La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, where the company resides. ACC specializes in inclusive multimedia performances that encourage difficult discussions and foster community through local theater, Street Parades, and national tours.
