Anwar Fazal was born 15 July 1941 in a little village called Sungai Bayor in Perak, Malaysia.It was a wooden house next to the river. His family shared it with a Chinese family. He is a leading scholar and a civil society activist in multiverse issues including consumer, health, environment, urban governance, heritage and peace.He was also an outstanding sportman representing the University of Malaya in four sports - Athletics, Cricket, Hockey and Rugby ." [1] . Anwar has often been described as a "cosmopolitan extraordinare".

Education

He studied at the King Edward VII School in Taiping and the Penang Free School.He studied at the University of Malaya, obtaining a degree in Economics and a post graduate diploma in education.He subsequently in 1964/65 taught at the Victoria Institution, Kuala Lumpur and The Royal Millitary College(RMC),Sungei Besi.

Career

In 1965 he joined the City Council of George Town, Penang and subsequently served as private secretary to the Penang Chief Minister, Dr. Lim Chong Eu . In 1973/74 he served has director of the Penang Development Corperation,responsible for investment and tourism.

In 1974 he moved to being the first director for the Asia Pacific office of the International Organisation of Consumers Union (IOCU) which was established in Penang, Malaysia.

In 1978, he became the first person from the Third World to become president of the International Organization of Consumers Unions (IOCU). [2] [1] In the following years he became a crucial figure in the international consumer movement, founding several global networks, which he called “a new wave of the consumer movement.” [2] [1] These included the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), founded in 1979; the Health Action International (HAI), created in 1981; and the Pesticide Action Network (PAN), formed in 1982.He also established "Consumer Interpol", a global initiative to alert organisations and governments regarding banned products and services.He was also a Chairperson of the Environment Liaison Centre International (ELCI) based in Nairobi, Kenya (1985-1987) [1]

He led the United Nations Development Programme( UNDP) on Urban Governance for Asia and the Pacific in various capacities for 12 years from 1992, working out of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He was a key player in setting up Transparency International Malaysia and served for six years on the Malaysia AntiCorruption Commission (MACC) Advisory Council.

He has written several poems, one of which, “Remember We Are One”, has gone global into a song, written by Ysase Barnwell, member of the group,“Sweet Honey in the Rock”. It has been made into greeting cards and featured in books such as “Liberating Faith”, “Prayers for a Thousand Years” and a book on common prayers” by World Council of Churches. 13.

He has been a key figure in creating these Days of Action which are now celebrated globally: World Consumer Rights Day (15 March), World Breastfeeding Week (1-7 August), World Migrants Day (18 December). He was also proposer of the idea of World Wetlands Day (1 February).

He has served has visiting professor at the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and as adjunct profesor at the International Islamic University Malaysia ( IIUM). He also founded and headed the Right Livelihood College (RLC) from 2009. The RLC is a academic/activist global initiative of the Right Livelihood Foundation that has now some twelve Campuses around the world.

He is currently chairperson of ThinkCity https://thinkcity.com.my/, the Dr.Wu Lien -Teh Society https://wulientehsociety.org/ and Penang Gandhi Peace Centre https://penanggandhipeacecentre.blogspot.com/. He is also Vice Chairman of Friends of the Earth Malaysia. He founded the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) in 1969 and still serves on its council. He is also on the board of Citizens International.He is Chairman Emeritus of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) which he founded in 1991.
