Arab Sibghatullah (born July 4, 2001) is an Afghan judoka who competed with the Refugee Olympic Team at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Early life

Arab Sibghatullah was born in Kunduz, Afghanistan, on July 4, 2001. Encouraged by his brother, he started practicing judo at the age of eight in Kunduz, joining their national youth team at the age of nineteen. [1] [2]

In 2021, Sibghatullah was forced to flee the Taliban in Afghanistan. He travelled 6,000 kilometres (3,700 mi) mainly by foot through thirteen countries including Iran, Turkey, Greece, Bosnia, and Slovenia. [3] He finally arrived in Germany in November 2022, where he was given aslyum. [4] [5] [6]

Life in Germany

Upon arriving in Germany, Sibghatullah was placed in a refugee center in Kamen, where he learned of a judo club with a coach who could speak Persian. [3]

Sibghatullah practices judo with the 1. Judo-Club in Mönchengladbach and at a training camp in Cologne. [5] He placed seventh in the Madrid European Open on June 10, 2023. [7]

Summer 2024 Olympics

On May 2, 2024, Sibghatullah was announced as a member of the Refugee Olympic Team for its participation in the 2024 Summer Olympics, [8] particularly in the Men's 81 kg event. [9] On July 30, he was eliminated in the round of 32 in a match against Matthias Casse, which he lost with a score of 11–1. [10]

Baruch Shmailov is an Israeli Olympic judoka. He competes in the under 66 kg weight category, and won a gold medal in the 2022 World Masters in Jerusalem. Shmailov also won a bronze in the 2017 World Masters, as well as a silver at the 2018 World Masters. As of December 2022, Shmailov was ranked #3 in -66 kg weight category. He competed for Israel at the 2020 Summer Olympics, finishing in fifth place in the individual competition and winning a bronze medal in the mixed team. He has reached a high world ranking of third in 2019, 2022, and 2024. Shmailov is representing Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in judo in the men's 66 kg event, and in the mixed team event which will take place on August 3.

Tohar Butbul is an Israeli Olympic judoka. He competes in the under 73 kg weight category, where he won silver medals at the 2019 Judo World Masters and the 2021 European Championships, and won bronze medals in the 2017 Paris Grand Slam and 2017 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam. As of March 2018 he was ranked #9 in the world in the U73 kg division. He was a member of the Israeli team that won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Butbul will represent Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in judo in the men's 73 kg event on 29 July 2024, and in the mixed team event.

The Men's 73 kg competition in judo at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo was held on 26 July 2021 at the Nippon Budokan.

Ahmad Alikaj is a Syrian judoka who competes in the under 73 kg category.

François Gauthier-Drapeau is a Canadian judoka who competes in the men's 81 kg category and formerly in the 73 kg category. Gauthier-Drapeau was born in Alma, Quebec, Canada. Gauthier-Drapeau has won multiple medals at the World and Pan-American level.
