Arabi (Somali : Araabi), is a town located in the Dembel district of the Sitti Zone, in the Somali region of Ethiopia. It is located in the famous Harrawa Valley in the Gadabuursi country. [1]

History

Arabi, Ethiopia is an old settlement and is the final resting place of Ugaas Cabdi Ugaas Cali (died: 1664), Ugaas and leader of the Gadabuursi Dir clan. [2] Arabi is located in the famous Harrawa Valley in the Gadabuursi country. [3]

The Ethiopian Administration for Refugee and Returnee Affairs and the UNHCR together opened a refugee camp in Arabi in the late 1980s and early 1990s to serve refugees of Gadabuursi origin. [4] [5]

Demographics

The town and region is primarily inhabited by the Bahabar cabdale subclan of the Gadabuursi Dir clan. [6] [7]

Mohamed Sheikh Hassan was one of the three ambassadorial brothers from Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia, all ethnic Somalis, the other two brothers were Adan Sheikh Hassan and Ismail Sheikh Hassan. All from the same prominent family who were one of the most interesting in the Horn of Africa. The first time in history three Somali brothers managed to become ambassadors in 3 different neighboring countries.

The Harrawa Valley is a long running valley located in the Gadabuursi country, north of Harar, Ethiopia. The Harrawa Valley is home to many of the principal and most well known settlements of the Gadabuursi Dir clan, such as Derwernache, Arabi, Dhamal, Hadawe and many other towns and villages.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gadabuursi Ughazate</span> 1575 to 1884 Northern Somali kingdom

The Gadabuursi Ughazate or Ugasate evolved from and was a successor kingdom to the Adal Sultanate and Sultanate of Harar. The first Ughaz (Ugaas) of this successor kingdom, Ali Makail Dera was the son of Makail Dera, the progenitor of the Makayl-Dheere. During the late 19th century, as the region became subject to colonial rule, the Ughaz assumed a more traditional and ceremonial leadership of the clan. The Gadabuursi give their King the title of Ughaz. It's an authentic Somali term for King or Sultan. The Gadabuursi in particular are one of the clans with a long tradition of the institution of Sultan.
