Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) is a public agricultural university in Mymensingh, Bangladesh. It was founded in 1961 by the Pakistani government as East Pakistan Agricultural University. It is the third-oldest university in the country.
Zainul Abedin, also known as Shilpacharya was a Bangladeshi painter. He became well known in 1944 through his series of paintings depicting some of the great famines in Bengal during its British colonial period. After the Partition of Indian subcontinent he moved to East Pakistan. In 1948, he helped to establish the Institute of Arts and Crafts at the University of Dhaka. The Indian Express has described him as a legendary Bangladeshi painter and activist. Like many of his contemporaries, his paintings on the Bengal famine of 1943 are viewed as his most characteristic works. His homeland honored him with the title "Shilpacharya" "Great teacher of the arts" for his artistic and visionary attributes. He was the pioneer of the modern art movement that took place in Bangladesh and was rightly considered by Syed Manzoorul Islam as the founding father of Bangladeshi modern arts, soon after Bangladesh earned the status of an independent republic.
Awards and decorations of the Bangladesh Liberation War were decorations bestowed by the major warring parties for actions during the Bangladesh Liberation War. Bangladesh, India and Pakistan all issued awards and decorations related to the conflict.
The Independence Award, formally known as the Independence Day Award or Swadhinata Padak, is the highest state award given by the government of Bangladesh. Introduced in 1977 by President Ziaur Rahman, this award is bestowed upon Bangladeshi citizens or organizations in recognition of substantial contributions to one of many fields, including the War of Liberation, the Language Movement, education, literature, journalism, public service, science and technology, medical science, social science, song, games and sports, fine arts, rural development, and other areas.
Jatin Sarker is a Bengali intellectual, researcher and biographer of Bangladesh. He was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2008 for research and essays and Independence Day Award in 2010 for education. As of September 2021, he has published 35 books.
Mohammad Abdul Hamid is a Bangladeshi politician who served as the 15th president of Bangladesh from 2013 to 2023. He was elected to his first term in April 2013, and re-elected in 2018. Previously, he served as the speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad from January 2009 to April 2013. He was the acting president after the death of Zillur Rahman in March 2013. He was the longest serving president in the history of Bangladesh.
Masud Rana, better known by the stage name Shakib Khan is a Bangladeshi actor, producer, businessman, occasional singer, film organiser, and media personality who works in Bengali films. He is widely regarded as one of the most popular and influential figures in Bengali cinema with his career spanning about two decades and 250 films. Khan has been the propeller of the contemporary film industry, Dhallywood and is one of the highest paid actor in Bangladesh and West Bengal. He did his debut in 1999 in action romantic Ananta Bhalobasha, and is one of the most successful actors in Bengali cinema.
Devdas is a 2013 Bangladeshi romantic period drama film based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novel Devdas. The film is directed by Chashi Nazrul Islam, who also directed the 1982 version and produced by Faridur Reza Sagar under the banner of his Impress Telefilm, based on the 1917 novel of the same name by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The film is set in the early 1900s and follows Shakib Khan as Devdas Mukherjee, a wealthy law graduate who returns from Calcutta after 13 years to marry his childhood sweetheart, Paro, played by Apu Biswas. However, the rejection of this marriage by his own family sparks his descent into alcoholism, ultimately leading to his emotional deterioration and him seeking refuge with a courtesan, Chandramukhi, played by Moushumi.
Chashi Nazrul Islam was a Bangladeshi film director and producer. He won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Director twice for the films Shuvoda in 1986 and Hangor Nodi Grenade in 1997. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2004 by the Government of Bangladesh.
Bappy Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi actor who works in Bengali films. Referred to in the media as "The Sultan of Dhallywood", he has starred in over 45 films in a decade-long career, and is one of the country's most popular actors.
Masud Parvez is a Bangladeshi film actor, director,politician and producer. At present, he is a presidium member of the Jatiya Party. He won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the film Ojante (1996), the Best Supporting Actor award for Sahoshi Manush Chai (2003) and the Bangladesh National Film Award for Lifetime Achievement 2019.
Satya Saha was a Bangladeshi composer, and musician. His notable composed songs are "Chena Chena Lage" by Shyamal Mitra, "Dukkho Amar Basor Raater Palonko", "Chhiti Dio Protidin" by Sabina Yasmin, "Mon Bole Tumi Asbe", "Rupali Nadire", "Bondho Hote Cheye Tomar" by Subir Nandi, "Akasher Haate Ache" by Shammi Akhter, "Tumi Ki Dekhecho Kobhu" by Abdul Jabbar, "Oi Dur Digonte", "Mago Ma Ogo Ma" etc. He earned three Bangladesh National Film Awards in 1994, 1996, and 2001 in music director and composer categories. In 2013, he was awarded Independence Day Award after his death. He was the father of musician Emon Saha and film director Sumon Saha.
Anjana Sultana was a Bangladeshi film actress. She performed in more than 300 films. She won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in the film Parineeta (1986).
Jakir Hossain Raju is a Bangladeshi film director. Besides film-making, he is also a story writer, screenplay and dialogue writer. He won three National Film Awards for the films Bhalobaslei Ghor Bandha Jay Na (2010) and Moner Moto Manush Pailam Na (2019).
Saidul Anam Tutul was a Bangladeshi drama and film director. He started his career as a film editor. He won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Editing for the film Surja Dighal Bari (1979).
Arun Roy was a Bangladeshi cinematographer. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Cinematography three times for the films Bodhu Biday (1978), Johnny (1983) and Bhaijan (1983). Roy died on 2 January 2025, at the age of 56.
Abu Zafar Mohammad Saleh, popularly known as the Pir of Sarsina, was a Bangladeshi Islamic scholar. He was said to have contributed to the establishment of 3000 educational institutions. Saleh had also pushed for the establishment of the Islamic Arabic University and ibtedayi madrasas in Bangladesh. Despite being a recipient of the Independence Day Award, he has been accused of collaborating with the Pakistan Army and committing war crimes during the Bangladesh Liberation war.
Mohammed Noorul Quader was a Bangladeshi freedom fighter, government officer, and entrepreneur. He was the first establishment secretary of the Mujibnagar Government Probashi Sarkar, the first secretary of Bangladesh, and a pioneer of Bangladesh's export-oriented ready made garment industry. He was also the founding chairman of the Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation and the founder of the Desh Group.
Kamrul Islam is a Bangladeshi doctor who won the Independence Award in 2022 for his contribution to the field of medicine.
