Arshad-uz Zaman was an ambassador of Bangladesh and former Advisor to President Badruddoza Chowdhury. [1]

Early life

Zaman was born in Bagerhat District. His father was Khan Bahadur Fazlur Rahman. He graduated from the University of Calcutta. He then studied at the Instituts d'études politiques at Sorbonne Université. [2]

Career

In 1962–1963, Zaman served as the press attaché at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations. [3] [4]

Zaman served as the ambassador of Bangladesh to Algeria, Senegal, and Egypt. He served in the Organisation of Islamic Conference as the Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs. [2] [5] His lifelong affection for France and its language, which included his translation of the works of Andre Malraux into Bengali, was recognised by a Legion of Honour award by the French government. [6] [2]

After retiring as a diplomat he wrote in a number of Bangladeshi newspapers such as the Janakantha, Dhaka Courier, and The Daily Star. He also worked as the advisor to President Badruddoza Chowdhury. [2] In 2000, he published a memoir called Privileged Witness: Memoirs of a Diplomat. [7] He was a Presidium member of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh. [8]

Personal life

Zaman was serving in the Pakistan consulate in the 1950s and studied Turkish under Vasfiye Kalmuk. He married her and they had two daughter; Jazmin and Amberin Zaman, a Turkish journalist. [9] [10]

Death

Zaman died of cardiac arrest on 12 April 2008 at the United Hospital in Bangaldesh. [2]

The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of term of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party administration. BNP government increased the age of chief justice retirement in an unconstitutional way to bias the appointment of the head of the caretaker government. CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections. Political conflict began with the alleged appointment of a Chief Advisor, a role which devolved to the President, Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed. The interim period was marked from the beginning by violent protests initiated by the Awami League named Logi Boitha Andolan, with 40 people killed and hundreds injured in the first month. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party had its own complaints about the process and the opposition.

Mukhlesur Rahman Chowdhury, also known as Mokhles Chowdhury, is a Bangladeshi journalist and editor. He served as Press Secretary of the President Iajuddin Ahmed. Mukhles Chowdhury performed as an advisor to the President Iajuddin Ahmed during the Caretaker Government established in October 2006.

Zulfiqer Russell is a Bangladeshi lyricist and journalist. He is currently the editor of the online news site, The Bangla Tribune. He was the winner of the Channel i Music Awards in 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2022 and also received the Mirchi Music Awards (Bangla) award for the Song of the Year in the Modern Song category for, "Shabuj Chilo". Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh is a political party in Bangladesh founded by former President of Bangladesh and BNP parliamentarian Dr. A. Q. M. Badruddoza Chowdhury in 2004. Abdul Mannan and recent Rabaya Begum; two of the most deepest assets of BDB play the most vital role by recruiting and managing the party to promote itself towards its objectives. Their party symbol during the polls is the kula. Its current political alignment is ambiguous, and has two seats in the parliament.

Enforced disappearances in Bangladesh are cases in which the Government of Bangladesh directly or indirectly kidnaps people and holds them incommunicado. According to a Dhaka-based human rights group Odhikar, at least 402 people have become victim of enforced disappearance from 2009 to 2017 under the current Awami League administration. These incidents along with extrajudicial killings in Bangladesh has been criticized by The United Nations and human rights groups including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), a special paramilitary unit in Bangladesh, is alleged to be behind most of these disappearances even though RAB claimed these allegations to be false. The current Awami League government denies involvement in these forced disappearances even when victims later surface in custody.

Moinul Hossain Chowdhury was a Bangladesh Army officer who served as the adjutant general of Bangladesh army and former advisor of the caretaker government.

Mosud Mannan is a diplomat of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. As of 22 October 2020, he is serving as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Republic of Turkey. Mahbub Uz Zaman ia a Bangladesh diplomat and Ambassador of Bangladesh to China. He is the former Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His is the former High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka and Singapore.
