Arshad-uz Zaman was an ambassador of Bangladesh and former Advisor to President Badruddoza Chowdhury. [1]

Early life

Zaman was born in Bagerhat District. His father was Khan Bahadur Fazlur Rahman. He graduated from the University of Calcutta. He then studied at the Instituts d'études politiques at Sorbonne Université. [2]

Career

In 1962–1963, Zaman served as the press attaché at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations. [3] [4]

Zaman served as the ambassador of Bangladesh to Algeria, Senegal, and Egypt. He served in the Organisation of Islamic Conference as the Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs. [2] [5] His lifelong affection for France and its language, which included his translation of the works of Andre Malraux into Bengali, was recognised by a Legion of Honour award by the French government. [6] [2]

After retiring as a diplomat he wrote in a number of Bangladeshi newspapers such as the Janakantha, Dhaka Courier, and The Daily Star. He also worked as the advisor to President Badruddoza Chowdhury. [2] In 2000, he published a memoir called Privileged Witness: Memoirs of a Diplomat. [7] He was a Presidium member of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh. [8]

Personal life

Zaman was serving in the Pakistan consulate in the 1950s and studied Turkish under Vasfiye Kalmuk. He married her and they had two daughter; Jazmin and Amberin Zaman, a Turkish journalist. [9] [10]

Death

Zaman died of cardiac arrest on 12 April 2008 at the United Hospital in Bangladesh. [2]

The 2006–2008 Bangladeshi political crisis began as a caretaker government (CTG) assumed power at the end of October 2006 following the end of term of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party administration. The BNP government increased the chief justice's retirement age in an unconstitutional way to bias the appointment of the head of the caretaker government. CTG manages the government during the interim 90-day period and parliamentary elections. Political conflict began with the alleged appointment of a Chief Advisor, a role which devolved to the President, Dr. Iajuddin Ahmed. The interim period was marked from the beginning by violent protests initiated by the Awami League named Logi Boitha Andolan, with 40 people killed and hundreds injured in the first month. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party had its own complaints about the process and the opposition.

Mosud Mannan is a diplomat of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. As of 22 October 2020, he is serving as the Ambassador of Bangladesh to the Republic of Turkey. Waker-uz-Zaman is the four star general of the Bangladesh Army and the current Chief of Army Staff (CAS) of the Bangladesh Army since 23 June 2024. Prior to his appointment as CAS, he served as the Chief of General Staff (CGS) of the Bangladesh Army. Previously he served as the 15th Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division.

Mahbub Uz Zaman ia a Bangladesh diplomat and former Ambassador of Bangladesh to China. He is the former Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is the former High Commissioner of Bangladesh to Sri Lanka and Singapore.

Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury is a Bangladeshi diplomat and ambassador of Bangladesh to Nepal. He is the former Deputy High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India.
