Asbestosdeath was an American doom metal band from San Jose, California, the precursor to the highly influential band Sleep.
Asbestosdeath started life in the late 1980s [1] as a trio consisting of Al Cisneros on bass, Chris Hakius on drums, and Tom Choi on guitar. [2] Matt Pike later joined as a second guitarist. They recorded two 7"s: their first (Unclean, 1989) [1] was self-released (Asbestos Records) and a second 7" (Dejection, 1990) was released later that year by Profane Existence. [3] [4] Choi left Asbestosdeath to form Noothgrush after the release of the second 7". [5] The band recruited Justin Marler to replace Choi and changed their name to Sleep. [5] [6]
In 2007, Southern Lord Records reissued Asbestosdeath's two 7"s on CD and 10" vinyl. [7] The four songs on the album comprise the entirety of Asbestosdeath's recordings. [8] [9]
Sleep is an American heavy metal band from San Jose, California. Guitarist Matt Pike and bassist and vocalist Al Cisneros have been the only constant members throughout its history, with several changes of drummers throughout their history. Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on metal in the 1990s. The band first gained attention with their second album, Sleep's Holy Mountain (1992). However, conflict with the band's record company contributed to Sleep's breakup by the end of the decade. Sleep's third album, Dopesmoker, was released after the band's dissolution. The band reformed in 2009 and has played sporadic live dates internationally since. In 2018, Sleep surprise-released their comeback album, The Sciences, on Third Man Records, to critical acclaim.
Profane Existence is a Minneapolis-based anarcho-punk collective. Established in 1989, the collective publishes a nationally known zine, as well as releasing and distributing anarcho-punk, crust, and grindcore music, and printing and publishing pamphlets and literature. Stacy Thompson describes the collective as “the largest, longest-lasting, and most influential collective in Anarcho-Punk so far.” The collective folded in 1998, although its distribution arm, then called Blackened Distribution, continued operating. It restarted in 2000. "Making punk a threat again" is the group's slogan.
Rx Bandits are an American four-piece band based in Seal Beach, California, United States. The band formed in 1995 in Orange County, California. They have appeared on the Vans Warped Tour, at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and at The Bamboozle.
Disrupt was an American crust punk band from Lynn, Massachusetts that was active from 1987 to 1993. The lineup was Jay Stiles and Pete Kamarinos (vocals), Chris Drake (guitar), Harry Haralabatos (drums), Tony Leone (bass). After recording one rehearsal demo, Tony and Harry left the band. Brad Jones (drums) and Mike Williams (guitar) joined in the spring of 1988. Brad left the band a couple of months later and Mike started playing drums. With this lineup, they recorded the Millions Die For Moneymaking thirteen-song demo with Jay also playing bass in November 1988. In the spring of 1989, Mike and Chris left the band and Harry their first drummer rejoined so they could record songs that at the time were supposed to be on a split 7" with Extreme Noise Terror. At this time, they recruited Scott Lucid to play bass. In October 1989, they recorded five songs for the self titled 7" that was co-released on Crust records and Deafcore records. The lineup on the first 7" was Pete (vocals), Jay, Scott (bass) and Harry (drums). In 1990, Scott left the band and they acquired Bob Palombo to play bass. A few months earlier, Chris Drake rejoined the band and Terry Savastano (Spasm) joined on second guitar. This lineup recorded eleven songs for the Refuse Planet 7" Relapse and split 7" with Destroy in January 1991. Both records were released in 1991. Chris left the band in early 1991 and then they got Jeff Hayward on second guitar. About a week after Jeff joined the band, Harry (drums) quit so they recruited Randy Odierno. In May 1991 the lineup was Pete Kamarinos (vocals), Jay Stiles (vocals), Terry Savastano (guitar), Jeff Hayward (guitar), Bob Palombo (bass) and Randy Odierno (drums). That year they entered Headroom studios and recorded songs for split 7"s with Disdain, Resist, Tuomiopaivan Lapset (Ecocentric) and Taste of Fear. The split 7"s and the Smash Divisions live 7" (S.O.A.) were released in 1992. In November 1992, they entered One World studios with Bill T. Miller and recorded thirty songs for the Unrest album and Deprived 7". The ten songs for the Deprived 7" were new recordings of older tracks. In June 1993, they entered the Lanes studios with Bill T Miller and recorded 17 songs. Eight songs from the session were released on the split LP with Sauna (Sludge) in 1994. The split 7" with Warcollapse was released on Crust records in 1995. Disrupt toured Europe in October/November 1993. After the tour, they broke up due to personal and musical differences. The Unrest album was released on Relapse in August 1994.
Doom are an English hardcore punk band from Birmingham whose first lineup were together from 1987 to 1990. Despite its short existence, the band is considered pivotal in the rise of crust punk, a genre of punk rock that takes influence and elements from extreme metal. They recorded for Peaceville Records and are cited as an early precursor to grindcore. Doom were also a favourite of BBC Radio DJ John Peel.
Al Cisneros is an American musician. He is the lead singer and bassist for stoner rock/doom metal bands Sleep and Om. He also was a member of Shrinebuilder and Asbestosdeath and has put out nine releases as a solo artist.
Om is an American doom metal band from San Francisco, California. Formed as a duo in 2003 by the rhythm section of the band Sleep, Om is currently a trio consisting of Cisneros, Emil Amos (drums), and Tyler Trotter (guitar).
Matthew Pike is an American musician best known as the guitarist of stoner metal/doom metal band Sleep and the frontman of High on Fire. With High on Fire, Pike won the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance for the song "Electric Messiah".
Chris Hakius is an American retired rock drummer best known for his work in Om and Sleep.
Gang Green is an American punk rock band originally from Braintree, Massachusetts. Chris Doherty (guitar), Bill Manley (bass) and Mike Dean (drums) started the band in 1980 and broke up in 1983. Doherty reformed Gang Green the following year, and the band experienced numerous lineup changes until its dissolution for the second time in 1992. Doherty has been the band's only constant member and has kept Gang Green active from 2005 onwards. The band was influential in the formation of the East Coast hardcore punk scene, and went on to become one of the forerunners of crossover thrash and speed metal in the late 1980s.
The Rosebuds were an American indie rock band from Raleigh, North Carolina, that recorded and performed from 2001 to 2014. Its current members are Ivan Howard (vocals/guitar/drums/bass/keyboards/programming) and Kelly Crisp (vocals/keyboard/drums/guitar/accordion). Billy Alphin had played drums on the album The Rosebuds Make Out, Wes Phillips played drums on the E.P."Unwind", Lee Waters played drums on the record Birds Make Good Neighbors, and Matt McCaughan played the drums on Night of the Furies, Life Like and Loud Planes Fly Low. Rob Lackey was behind the drum kit during the taping of The Rosebuds Live at the Cats Cradle, a charity only recording sold at cytunes.org to help fight for the prevention of cancer, as well as on the track "Second Birds of Paradise" on "Loud Planes Fly Low."

Sleep's Holy Mountain is the second studio album by the American heavy metal band Sleep. It was released in November 1992 in Europe and March 1993 in the US through Earache Records.
Volume One is the debut album by the American band Sleep. Not long after Sleep's formation, the band went to Razor's Edge studios to start recording. It was the only album recorded with original guitarist Justin Marler, before he would depart from the band in fall 1991 to become an Orthodox monk. Volume One showcases a darker sound and stronger doom metal influence than Sleep's later work. The image featured on the cover is taken from the Salvador Dalí painting "Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon".
Pilgrimage is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Om. It is the band's first release for the Southern Lord label. It was recorded at Electrical Audio by Steve Albini. It is the final studio album to feature Chris Hakius on drums.
Shrinebuilder was an American stoner/doom metal supergroup consisting of various established musicians, particularly of the doom metal subgenre. Their first and only album, Shrinebuilder, was released in October 2009.
Jerusalem and Dopesmoker are two versions of the third album by the American heavy metal band Sleep. The former title was released in 1999 by The Music Cartel and the latter was released by Tee Pee Records in 2003. The music for these albums comprises an extended hour-length piece, developed over four years and recorded in 1996 under the auspices of Sleep's label at the time, London Records. When recording had completed, London was unhappy with the finished product and refused to release it, leading to Sleep's disbandment and the album surfacing on bootlegs and unauthorized indie releases in subsequent years. All versions of the album received very positive reception from music critics, who described it as a high-water mark in both the stoner metal and doom metal genres.
"The Clarity" is a single by the American rock band Sleep. The song was released digitally for free on July 21, 2014 through the cable network Adult Swim's 2014 weekly singles series. The release of "The Clarity" also marks the first release of newly recorded material in almost 20 years. Later, it was re-released on February 10, 2017 via Southern Lord Records as a 12" vinyl pressing and recut by Adam Gonsalves. In 2021, it was remixed and reissued again on the EP Iommic Life via Third Man Records.
"Leagues Beneath" is a single by the American stoner rock band Sleep. The song was released for free digitally on May 23, 2018 through Adult Swim's 2017 singles series, marking Sleep's second entry following 2014's "The Clarity". "Leagues Beneath" was released a month after the band's 2018 return album, The Sciences, which marked Sleep's first full-length studio release in twenty years. Later in 2018, "Leagues Beneath" was released on etched vinyl through Third Man Records.
