The Ashkelon rocket attacks were a series of rocket attacks from Gaza initiated by the ISIL affiliate Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade in 2015.

Events

After the first rocket attacks on June 2 and 7 by Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade, they claimed responsibility for another attack on June 11 however Israeli intelligence asserts the June 11th attack was actually carried out by Palestinian Islamic Jihad. On June 6 the Israeli Airforce carried out airstrikes targeting Hamas. [1] After the June 11 rocket attack on June 23 rockets were fired into Hof Ashkelon and soon after the Israeli Airforce conducted another airstrike. [2] Five days later on June 28 sirens sounded around Hof Ashkelon and another rocket was fired.

In July one rocket was fired into Hof Ashkelon from Gaza and exploded, Israel soon after launched airstrikes targeting Hamas. [3]

There were no attacks on Ashkelon or in Hof Ashkelon in August, however in September 2015 attacks resumed. [4] On September 18 a rocket exploded in Sderot which damaged a house and a bus. [5] Later on the same day a rocket fired from Gaza was intercepted by Iron Dome over Ashkelon. On September 21 Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade fired a Grad rocket into Ashkelon. [6]

At least 112 Palestinian militants and civilians, along with three Israelis, were killed, and more than 150 Palestinians and seven Israelis were injured.

The Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade, also known as Islamic State in Gaza, is an Islamist militant group affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant that is active in the Gaza Strip. Its goals have consistently matched those of the Islamic State, in that it seeks to establish the al-Sham caliphate. As such, it opposes all forms of Palestinian nationalism while also supporting the elimination of all Jews and other ethno-religious 'infidels' from the region.

A Gaza–Israel conflict escalation began on 3 May 2019, after two Israeli soldiers were injured by sniper fire from the Gaza Strip during the weekly protests at the Gaza–Israel border. In response, the Israeli Air Force carried out an airstrike, killing two Palestinians. Following this, hundreds of rockets were launched from Gaza at Israel, while the Israeli Air Force struck numerous targets within the Gaza Strip. In addition, Israel increased its troop presence near the Israel–Gaza barrier.
