Asif Iqbal Tanha (born 13 January 1996) is an Indian student activist, a former student of Jamia Millia Islamia and a member of Students Islamic Organisation of India. [1] He was allegedly involved in the Delhi Riots conspiracy case and is an accused under the UAPA Act. [2] Tanha is also associated with United Against Hate (UAH), a campaign that was started in July 2017 in response to the series of lynchings and hate crimes in India. [3]

Early life and education

Asif Iqbal Tanha was born on 13 January 1996 in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand. [4] He received his primary education in his hometown and graduated in the traditional dars-e-nizami from Jamia Misbahul Uloom, an Islamic seminary in Uttar Pradesh. He received a B.A. in Persian language from the Jamia Millia Islamia. [5]

On 07 May 2023, Tanha married Nikhat Momin.

Political activism and controversies

Jamia violence and arrest

After Indian Parliament passed the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act, students started protesting in and outside their universities including Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University and Jawaharlal Nehru University. Asif along with other activists such as Meeran Haider, Safoora Zargar were leading the protests. [6] He was representing students Islamic Organisation in Jamia Coordination Committee formed after Jamia Violence. On 15 December 2019 when Delhi Police entered in the campus forcefully to suppress the protesting students. Next day Delhi police registered an FIR against Asif and some other student activists. Delhi Police arrested Asif on 17 May 2020 during lockdown. [7]

Case status

He got the bail in the Delhi Riots Conspiracy case on 16 June 2021. [8] Police did not file the charge sheet in the Jamia Violence [9] case yet. [10] In his press meet after release from Jail, Tanha said he will continue the struggle against the CAA. [11]

Media trial

On 18 August 2020, Zee News claimed that they got Tanha's confession. In Zee News’s Special Show DNA, Sudheer Chowdhary claimed that Tanha has accepted his role in Jamia and Delhi Violence. Tanha’s counsel filed a legal case against Zee News, OpIndia and other 2 parties. Where Asif Iqbal Tanha stated before the Delhi High Court that Zee News and OpIndia violated Programme Code by making public the alleged confessional statement. [12] Delhi High Court on 15 October 2020 issued notice to Zee News channel to file an affidavit to disclose the source from where the alleged confessional statement was received. [13]

Indian Mujahideen (IM) is an Islamic terrorist group which has been particularly active in India. The jihadist group was founded as an offshoot of the Students' Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) by several radicalized members including Iqbal Bhatkal, Riyaz Bhatkal, Yasin Bhatkal, Abdul Subhan Qureshi, Amir Reza Khan and Sadiq Israr Sheikh, among others. It has been active since at least 2005 when it bombed the Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi. It carried out several serial-bombings in Indian cities in the following years notably the 2007 Uttar Pradesh bombings, 2008 Jaipur bombings, 2008 Ahmedabad bombings, 2008 Delhi bombings, 2010 Pune bombing, 2011 Mumbai bombings, 2011 Delhi bombing, 2013 Patna bombings, 2013 Hyderabad blasts and the 2013 Bodh Gaya bombings.

The Citizenship Amendment Act (Bill) protests, also known as the CAA Protest, CAB Protest or CAA and NRC protests, occurred after the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) was enacted by the Government of India on 12 December 2019. The Jamia Millia Islamia attack refers to the forceful entry by Delhi police into the Jamia Millia Islamia university during a confrontation with student protesters that started outside the campus on 15 December 2019. Hundreds of police officers forcefully entered the campus and detained more than a hundred students during the confrontation with the protesters. The police used batons and tear gas to disperse protesters. The police also entered the university library and washrooms and in the process of the violence ransacked parts of it. The visuals of students being dragged and assaulted by the police were telecast by news channels. About two hundred people were injured and were admitted to AIIMS and the Holy Family Hospital.

Sharjeel Imam is an Indian student activist from Kako village of Jehanabad, Bihar. He had completed his B.Tech. and M.Tech. from IIT-Bombay and joined Jawaharlal Nehru University in 2013 for completing his master's degree in Modern History and in 2015 he started Ph.D. from the same university. He is infamous for his inflammatory speeches made during anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests which led to his arrest under sedition.

Meeran Haider is an Indian activist leader and human rights defender known for his role in Citizenship Amendment Act protests. He is also the RJD State President of Delhi youth wing unit.

Ishrat Jahan is a practising advocate and former municipal councillor for the Indian National Congress in Delhi who is an accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and was granted bail on 14 March 2022 after her incarceration since February 2020.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Abdul Lateef Azmi</span>

Abdul Lateef Azmi was an Urdu litterateur and among the close associates of the founders of Jamia Millia Islamia. He joined Jamia Millia as a student of B.A. in 1936 and served the university over 50 years in various capacities. He was one of the longest serving editors of Jamia Millia's official magazine, Jamia. He died in Delhi on May 11, 2002. In 1985, Maktaba Jamia, New Delhi, published a book Abdul Lateef Azmi Hayat-o-Khidmat. Several scholars contributed chapters in the book on various facets of Abdul Lateef Azmi and his life.

Nadeem Khan is an Indian human rights activist. Khan is the National Secretary of the Association for Protection of Civil Rights (APCR). He is a co-founder of United Against Hate (UAH).
