The Ceylon Electricity Board - CEB,is the largest electricity company in Sri Lanka. With a market share of nearly 100%,it controls all major functions of electricity generation,transmission,distribution and retailing in Sri Lanka. It is one of the only two on-grid electricity companies in the country;the other being Lanka Electricity Company (LECO). The company earned approximately Rs 204.7 billion in 2014,with a total of nearly 5.42 million consumer accounts. It is a government owned and controlled utility of Sri Lanka that takes care of the general energy facilities of the island. The Ministry of Power and Energy is the responsible ministry above the CEB. Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB),established by an CEB Act No. 17 of 1969,is under legal obligation to develop and maintain an efficient,coordinated and economical system of Electricity supply in accordance with any Licenses issue.

The electricity sector in Sri Lanka has a national grid which is primarily powered by hydroelectric power and thermal power,with sources such as photovoltaics and wind power in early stages of deployment. Although potential sites are being identified,other power sources such as geothermal,nuclear,solar thermal and wave power are not used in the power generation process for the national grid.
South Africa has a large energy sector,being the third-largest economy in Africa. The country consumed 227 TWh of electricity in 2018. The vast majority of South Africa's electricity was produced from coal,with the fuel responsible for 88% of production in 2017. South Africa is the 7th largest coal producer in the world. As of July 2018,South Africa had a coal power generation capacity of 39 gigawatts (GW). South Africa is the world's 14th largest emitter of greenhouse gases. South Africa is planning to shift away from coal in the electricity sector and the country produces the most solar and wind energy by terawatt-hours in Africa. The country aims to decommission 34 GW of coal-fired power capacity by 2050. It also aims to build at least 20 GW of renewable power generation capacity by 2030. South Africa aims to generate 77,834 megawatts (MW) of electricity by 2030,with new capacity coming significantly from renewable sources to meet emission reduction targets. Through its goals stated in the Integrated Resource Plan,it announced the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme,which aims to increase renewable power generation through private sector investment.
The total primary energy consumption of the Philippines in 2012 was 30.2 Mtoe,most of which came from fossil fuels. Electricity consumption in 2010 was 64.52 TWh,of which almost two-thirds came from fossil fuels,21% from hydroelectric plants,and 13% from other renewable sources. The total generating capacity was 16.36 GW.
The Polgolla Barrage,is a barrage built across the Mahaweli River at Polgolla,in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. The barrage is used to increase the volume of water,for transfer to the hydroelectric power station located 8 km (5 mi) north,via penstock.
The Ace Embilipitiya Power Station is a 100 MW thermal power station in Embilipitiya,Sri Lanka. The heavy fuel oil-run power station was commissioned in March 2005,and was operated by Aitken Spence. The power station consisted of fourteen Caterpillar 16CM32C generation units of 7.11 MW each,which consumed approximately 550 tonnes of fuel oil per day. The Ministry of Power and Energy discontinued purchasing power from the private power station after its license expired in 2015,and hence was subsequently decommissioned.
The Aggreko Power Station (2003-2012) was a temporary 20-megawatt fuel oil-fired power station in Sri Lanka. It was commissioned in October 2003 after power generation company Aggreko won an open bid offered by the Ceylon Electricity Board to overcome the Sri Lanka energy crisis faced in the 1990s to early 2000s. It was decommissioned on 31 December 2012. Prior to decommissioning,Aggreko sold electricity to the Ceylon Electricity Board at a rate of Rs. 26 per KWh.
Chunnakam Power Station was a thermal power station in Chunnakam in northern Sri Lanka. Commissioned in 1958,the station is owned and operated by the state-owned Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). It was decommissioned in 2013,and replaced by the Uthuru Janani Power Station,which is constructed less than 100m south of the Chunnakam Power Station.
The Ace Matara Power Station is a 25-megawatt power station located in Matara,Sri Lanka. During its operations from 2002 to 2012,the plant utilized four 6.3 MWWärtsilä18V32LN generating units. The plant was decommissioned in 2012 after its 10-year PPA expired and recommissioned in 2017.
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka is the government entity responsible for policy formulation and regulation of the electric power distribution,water supply,petroleum resources,and other public utilities in Sri Lanka.
The 2019 Sri Lanka electricity crisis was a crisis which happened nearly a month from 18 March to 10 April 2019 faced by Sri Lanka caused by a severe drought that depleted water levels at hydroelectric plants. Sri Lanka experienced rolling blackouts for three to five hours per day except on Sundays in all parts of the island nation at different time schedules that started from 24 March 2019 to present. This is regarded as one of the worst blackouts confronted in Sri Lanka since 2016 and the longest ever blackout recorded in history of the country. However it was revealed that the main electricity providing institution Ceylon Electricity Board had restricted the power supply to almost all regions of the country without proper prior notice and implemented a time schedule unofficially from 24 March 2019. However the Ministry of Power and Renewable Energy revealed that it didn't grant and approve permission to CEB to impose power cuts.
The Sojitz Kelanitissa Power Station,is privately-owned 172 MW diesel-fired combined cycle power station located in Kelanitissa,in the city of Colombo,Sri Lanka. It is owned by Sojitz Kelanitissa Private Limited,a subsidiary of Sojitz Corporation. The power station is located adjacent to the Kelanitissa Power Station,which is a separate government-owned power station.
