The Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) is an international trade association of non-profit publishers [1] created in 1972. [2] It is the largest association of scholarly and professional publishers in the world, [1] with nearly 300 members in 30 countries. [2]

ALPSP awards

The ALPSP Awards recognise excellence and innovation in scholarly communications. The winners are announced at the ALPSP Conference. [3]

ALPSP is an inaugural signatory of the SDG Publishers Compact, [4] [5] [6] and has taken steps to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the publishing industry. These include creation of the University Press Redux Sustainability Award with Cambridge University Press in 2020. [7] The inaugural award was given to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for its SDG Pathfinder, an open-access digital discovery tool for finding content and data relating to the SDGs. [8] [9] Also recognized were Taylor & Francis [8] [10] and Bristol University Press [8] [11] .

Learned Publishing

Published in collaboration with the Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), ALPSP publishes a peer reviewed quarterly journal called Learned Publishing, covering the field of scholarly publishing. [12] The journal is freely available to all members of ALPSP and SSP. The journal is published on behalf of ALPSP by Wiley. The journal is indexed and has an Impact Factor, and is considered to be of a high level and to offer stimulating insights on the evolution of digital publishing. [13]

The current Editor-in-Chief is Pippa Smart, and the North American Editor is Lettie Conrad.

Events

ALPSP runs a series of events including training workshops, seminars, webinars and other events at various meetings, such as Frankfurt and London Book Fairs. [14] It runs a three-day annual conference that attracts several hundred participants from around the world. [15]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Crossref</span> Organization

Crossref is a nonprofit open digital infrastructure organisation for the global scholarly research community. Uniquely and persistently recording and connecting knowledge through open metadata and identifiers for all research objects such as grants and articles. It is the largest digital object identifier (DOI) Registration Agency of the International DOI Foundation. It has 19,000 members from 150 countries representing publishers, libraries, research institutions, and funders and was launched in early 2000 as a cooperative effort among publishers to enable persistent cross-platform citation linking in online academic journals. As of July 2023, Crossref identifies and connects 150 million records of metadata about research objects made openly available for reuse without restriction. They facilitate an average of 1.1 billion DOI resolutions every month, and they see 1 billion queries of the metadata every month.

The International Publishers Association is an international publishing industry federation of national publisher associations representing book and journal publishing, founded in 1896 in Paris. It is a non-profit and non-governmental organization, to promote and protect publishing and to raise awareness for publishing in the context of economic, cultural and political development. The IPA represents the interests of the publishing industry on an international level.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">International Association of Scientific, Technical, and Medical Publishers</span>

The International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers, known for short by the initials for the last part of its name, STM, is an international trade association organised and run for the benefit of scholarly, scientific, technical, medical and professional publishers. It was conceived as the STM Group at the Frankfurt Book Fair of 1969 following discussions at the 1968 meeting of the International Publishers Association. It obtained its current name and was registered in Amsterdam as a foundation in 1994.

The Publishers Association (PA) is the trade organisation serving book, journal and electronic publishers in the United Kingdom, established in 1896. Its mission is to strengthen the trading environment for UK publishers by providing a strong voice for the industry in government, in society and with other stakeholders in the UK, Europe and internationally. It seeks to provide a forum for the exchange of non‑competitive information between publishers and offer support and guidance to the industry through technological and other changes.

Emerald Publishing Limited is a scholarly publisher of academic journals and books, headquartered in Bingley, England. Originally focused in the areas of social sciences and management, including management, business, education, and library studies, Emerald also publishes in the areas of health, science, engineering and technology.

IOS Press is a publishing house headquartered in Amsterdam, specialising in the publication of journals and books related to fields of scientific, technical, and medical research. Established in 1987, IOS Press publishes around 100 international journals and releases about 75 book titles annually, covering fields such as computer science, mathematics, the natural sciences, and topics within medicine.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Canadian Science Publishing</span>

Canadian Science Publishing (CSP) is Canada's largest publisher of international scientific journals. It started in 1929 as the NRC Research Press, part of the National Research Council (NRC). In 2010, the organization spun off from NRC and was incorporated as a not-for-profit.

The European Association of Science Editors is a non-profit membership organisation for people interested in science communication and editing. Founded in 1982, in France, EASE now has an international membership.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development is an intergovernmental organisation with 38 Member countries, founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. It is a forum whose member countries describe themselves as committed to democracy and the market economy, providing a platform to compare policy experiences, seek answers to common problems, identify good practices, and coordinate domestic and international policies of its members.

The Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) is a professional society, founded in 1978, dedicated to promoting and advancing communication and networking among all sectors of the scholarly communications community. It has approximately 1,100 members from 24 countries including publishers, service providers, librarians, researchers, and consultants.

Established in 1996, Bioscientifica Ltd is the commercial subsidiary of the Society for Endocrinology, and provides publishing, events, and association management services to biomedical societies, and to the pharmaceutical industry. Although the company generates profits, these are redistributed to Bioscientifica's partner societies to fund biomedical research and practice.

Springer Nature or the Springer Nature Group is a German-British academic publishing company created by the May 2015 merger of Springer Science+Business Media and Holtzbrinck Publishing Group's Nature Publishing Group, Palgrave Macmillan, and Macmillan Education.

Baishideng Publishing Group is a publisher of medical journals based in Pleasanton, California. It was established on January 15, 1993, and originally published only one journal: the Chinese-language Journal of New Digestology. Its second journal was the World Journal of Gastroenterology, originally launched in 1995 as the China National Journal of New Gastroenterology. As of 2017, the company published 43 journals, 42 in English and one in Chinese.

Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels is a trade association of the German publishing industry, based in Frankfurt. It was founded in Frankfurt in 1948, and merged in 1991 with a similar Leipzig organisation. It organises the annual Frankfurt Book Fair, where the peace prize Friedenspreis des Deutschen Buchhandels has been awarded from 1950.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SDG Publishers Compact</span> Non-binding United Nations pact

The United Nations SDG Publishers Compact is a non-binding United Nations pact open to publishers, associations, booksellers and other organizations involved in the publishing industry, in support of the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The involvement of academic publishers reflects the importance of research and education as essential elements for making progress towards achieving the SDGs.
