Astrotheology is a discipline combining the methods and domains of space science with systematic theology. [1] Astrotheology concerns the theological, cultural, and ethical implications of space exploration and identifies the elements of myth and religion in space science. [2] [3] Astrotheology is a "multi-disciplinary branch of theology that takes up the relationship between God and the creation, especially the creation of the universe over time." [4] Ted F. Peters envisions astrotheology as "the meeting point between theologians and astrobiologists." [5] A.C. Pieterse describes the field as a "prophetic wormhole that relates space-time to eschatological transformation", a theology of nature rather than a natural theology. [6]
A.. C. Pieterse traces the "seeds" of astrotheology to the works of Greek philosophers such as Leucippus, Democritus, Epicurus, and Lucretius who "held that [the] cosmos is infinitely large, with an infinite number of patterns that could sustain intelligence." [7] The theologian Ted Peters similarly identifies ancient debates on the plurality of worlds (aperoi kosmoi) as a starting point for astrotheology, tracing it from Aristotle through to Thomas Aquinas, Jean Buridan, and William of Ockham. [8]
The word astrotheology, hyphenated as astro-theology, first appears in a tract by the Anglican clergyman William Derham. For Derham, the task of this discipline was to "glorify God by stressing the immensity and magnificence of God's creation." [4] Derham advocated a chronology of space science broken into three eras, the Ptolemaic, the Copernican, and post-Copernican. [9] In 1855, Edward Higginson published a series of four lectures, separating astrotheology into an earlier Jewish period and a modern period, the former regarding the mythology of ancient Israelites and the latter encompassing "modern philosophical views of the solar system and the fixed stars." [10]
For Peters, astrotheology is "at minimum, a theology of space science". [11] It connects with astrobiology, challenging the concept of extraterrestrial intelligence and engaging in discussions about the extent of God's creation. Astrotheology explores the spiritual dimensions inspired by space sciences, and uncovers hidden religious meanings in secular experiences. [12] Astrotheology collaborates with astroethicists to propose public policies related to scientific space exploration and ethical considerations. These policies may include guidelines for responsible space exploration, regulations for the protection of celestial bodies and ecosystems, protocols for interactions with potential extraterrestrial life, and frameworks for international cooperation in space exploration efforts. The relationship between religion and science involves discussions that interconnect the study of the natural world, history, philosophy, and theology. He is affiliated with the Institute for Quantum Studies in Chapman University in California. Xenoarchaeology, a branch of xenology dealing with extraterrestrial cultures, is a hypothetical form of archaeology that exists mainly in works of science fiction. The field is concerned with the study of the material remains to reconstruct and interpret past life-ways of alien civilizations. Xenoarchaeology is not currently practiced by mainstream archaeologists due to the current lack of any material for the discipline to study.

Theodore Frank Peters, known as Ted Peters, is an American Lutheran theologian and Emeritus Professor of Systematic Theology and Ethics at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union. In addition to his work as a theologian and educator, he is a prolific author and editor on Christian theology, Public Theology, the interaction of science and religion, bioethics, and space ethics. He is the former editor of Dialog, a quarterly scholarly magazine of modern and postmodern theology, and now co-editor of Theology and Science. Peters also serves on the Advisory Council of METI. Ted Peters also writes fiction, espionage thrillers featuring a female inner city pastor, Leona Foxx. He received a BA from Michigan State University, an M.Div. from Trinity Lutheran Seminary, and an MA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

Steven J. Dick is an American astronomer, author, and historian of science most noted for his work in the field of astrobiology. Dick served as the chief historian for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration from 2003 to 2009 and as the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology from 2013 to 2014. Before that, he was an astronomer and historian of science at the United States Naval Observatory in Washington, DC, from 1979 to 2003.

The UK Centre for Astrobiology was set up at the University of Edinburgh in 2011 by Charles Cockell. It was set up as a UK node, formally affiliated as an international partner with the NASA Astrobiology Institute (NAI) alongside other national nodes until the NAI's dissolution in 2019. It is an interdisciplinary study between space-related sciences and sociology that seeks to understand the impact of human society outside our current planetary system.
Space ethics, astroethics or astrobioethics is a discipline of applied ethics that discusses the moral and ethical implications arising from astrobiological research, space exploration and space flight. It deals with practical contemporary issues like the protection of the space environment and hypothetical future issues pertaining to our interaction with extraterrestrial life forms.
Rachel Sophia Baard is a South African theologian. Since 2019, she is an assistant professor of Theology and Ethics at Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, United States. Her first book, Sexism and Sin-Talk: Feminist Conversations on the Human Condition (2019) won the 2020 Andrew Murray / Desmond Tutu Book Prize. Her research areas include systematic and constructive theology, theological ethics, and feminist and political theologies.
