The Auckland Championships [1] or Auckland Tennis Championships [2] and later known as the Auckland City Championships [3] or Auckland Lawn Tennis Championships [4] is a combined men's and women's open grass court tennis tournament established in 1886 and was first played on tennis courts at the Old Government House, Auckland, New Zealand. The first tournament ran until 1942 when it was discontinued. In 1954 a second event was revived that is still held today. [5]

History

In 1886 the first open tournament held in Auckland was the Auckland Association Championships [6] [7] but was not always staged. In the 1920s major new tennis venues were built in Auckland for the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association (now called Tennis Auckland), as well as Wellington and Christchurch comprising both grass and hard courts. [8]

In 1920 when the Auckland LTA was looking for a permanent base, the only available site was a tip on Stanley Street. Undeterred, the local clubs raised the-then enormous sum of 1,800 pounds to prepare the site and build new courts. For the next 30 years the Tennis Centre in Stanley Street was home to local tennis matches. In 1942 the Auckland Championships were discontinued.

In 1954 a second Auckland Championships tournament was revived. [9] In 1956 Auckland hosted its first new permanent international tournament, known as the Auckland Invitation. [10] From 1961 to 1977 this tournament continued as a separate tournament called the Auckland City Championships. [11] The second version of championships however have survived till today. [12] The tournament has been known at times as the Auckland Lawn tennis Championships. Though no longer part of the international tennis circuit as it once was, it remains more of a local regional tournament today.

The WTA Auckland Open is a professional women's tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. The tournament is played annually, in the first week of January, at the ASB Tennis Centre in the suburb of Parnell, just east of the Central Business District. It is an International level tournament in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) World Tour. The equivalent men's event, the ATP Auckland Open, is played in the following week, immediately ahead of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open.

The Queensland Open originally called the Queensland Championships and also known as the Queensland Lawn Tennis Championships or Queensland Grass Court Championships and the Queensland State Championships was a tennis tournament played in Brisbane, Australia, from 1888 to 1994. The event was part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit and WTA Tour and was played originally on outdoor grass courts then outdoor and indoor hard courts.

The Surrey Championships also known as the Surrey Grass Court Championships and the Surrey County Championships was a men's and women's international tennis event originally founded in 1882 as the Berrylands Club Tournament. In 1890 the former tournament's name was changed to the Surbiton Open that featured the first Surrey County Championships. The tournament was first played in Richmond then later in Surbiton, Surrey, England on outdoor grass courts. It ran for 73 editions from 1890 to 1981 and after a period of 18 years re-emerged as the Surbiton Trophy.

The 1880 men's tennis season was the fifth amateur tennis tour held that year. It now incorporated 44 tournaments staged in Australia, Great Britain and Ireland and the United States. The 1880 Wimbledon Championships was won by John Hartley against Herbert Lawford, in the Challenge Round.

The 1969 ILTF Men's Tennis Circuit includes International Lawn Tennis Federation tournaments that were not affiliated to the NTL Tour or the WCT Circuit. It was the 93rd season since the first men's tennis tournaments were staged and 56th season since ILTF was formed.

The North of England Championships and later known as the Rothmans Open North of England Championships, was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1884 as the North Yorkshire Tournament. The South Saxons Open Tournament was an late 19th century and early 20th century combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1880 as the St. Leonards on Sea Lawn Tennis Tournament. The Orange Invitation was a grass court tennis tournament originally founded in 1881 as the Orange Lawn Tennis Club Open that ran until 1889. In 1920 the event was revived as an annual invitational tournament through to 1940.

The Killiney and Ballybrack Championships was a late Victorian period tennis tournament first established in 1886 at Ballybrack, Killiney and Ballybrack, County Dublin, Ireland and played on outdoor grass courts at the Killiney and Ballybrack Lawn Tennis Club, Killiney and Ballybrack, County Dublin, Ireland/ The tournament was staged until 1892 before it was discontinued.

The Mid-Kent Open Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1881, as a men only event called the Maidstone Lawn Tennis Tournament. The first staging of this event was at the Maidstone Athletic Ground, Sandling Place, Maidstone, Kent, England before it was discontinued after only one season. In 1894 a new Maidstone Open lawn tennis tournament was revived that featured the Mid-Kent Championships, this event ran until 1927.

The New Zealand Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1885 in Napier, New Zealand also known as the New Zealand National Lawn Tennis Championships or the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association Championships. The championships were organised by Tennis New Zealand, and played in various locations during its run that ended in 2020.

The Bar Harbor Club Open was a men's and women's tennis tournament founded in 1886 as the Bar Harbor Open. In 1899 it was rebranded as the Bar Harbor Invitation It was first organised by the Bar Harbor Lawn Tennis Club, Bar Harbor, Maine, United States. The first tournament ran until 1914 then was discontinued. In 1926 the tournament was revived and in 1929 the event was moved to the new held at the Bar Harbor Club that ran until 1972.

The Elberon Casino Invitation was an early men's tennis tournament founded in 1887 as the Elberon Lawn Tennis Club Open and played in the Elberon section of Long Branch, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States, until 1888.

The Staten Island Invitation was a men's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1886. It was first played at Staten Island Cricket and Baseball Club, Livingston, Staten Island, New York City, United States. The tournament was staged until 1922 when it was abolished.

The Rochester Lawn Tennis Tournament was a late-19th-century men's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1886. The tournament was organised by the Rochester Lawn Club and was first staged at the Rochester, New York, United States. The tournament ran annually until 1893 when it was discontinued.

The Hawke’s Bay Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1886 as men's event called the Napier Open. The tournament ran annually through til 1972 until it was discontinued.
