Audrey Christiaan is a Surinamese indigenous and environmental activist and politician. She is a member of the board of the Party for Law and Development (PRO) and in the 2020 elections she was a candidate in Paramaribo.
Christiaan is a daughter of the indigenous activist Thelma Christiaan-Bigiman. [1] In 2011 she took over her mother's chairmanship of the Indigenous Social-Cultural Association: Juku Jume Mar. [1] Thelma was actively involved in the Association of Indigenous Village Heads of Suriname (VIDS). [2]
In 2015, she established the Platform for Unity and Solidarity for Alliance and Progress (ESAV) (nl). [3] On 21 January 2015 in Paramaribo the party proclaimed a 15-point programme. [4] One of the central points of the programme was the recognition of indigenous peoples in the Constitution of Suriname as its first inhabitants, as well as supporting the examination of events in Surinamese history from the perspective of indigenous peoples. [4] Conservation and education are central policies in ESAV. [4] In 2017 she joined other Caribbean feminists as a panellist at the conference: "Towards a Politics of Accountability: Caribbean Feminisms, Indigenous Geographies, Common Struggles". [5]
Christiaan left the role of chairperson at ESAV to focus on a political career in March 2019. [6] She continued as chairperson of Juku Jume Mar. [6] She was elected a member of the board of the Party for Law and Development (PRO). [7] She joined the PRO because its policies on indigenous rights aligned with her own priorities. [8] In Suriname's 2020 elections she was a candidate in the Paramaribo district. [9] However, the PRO party did not acquire any seats. [10]
Desiré Delano Bouterse is a Surinamese military officer, politician, convicted murderer and drug trafficker who served as President of Suriname from 2010 to 2020. From 1980 to 1987, he was Suriname's de facto leader after conducting a military coup and establishing a period of military rule. In 1987, Bouterse founded the National Democratic Party (NDP). On 25 May 2010, Bouterse's political alliance, the Megacombinatie, which included the NDP, won the parliamentary elections, and on 19 July 2010, Bouterse was elected as President of Suriname with 36 of 50 parliament votes. He was inaugurated on 12 August 2010.
Kawemhakan, formerly also known as Anapaikë, is a Wayana village in the Sipaliwini District of Suriname. The village lies on the banks of the Lawa River, which forms the border with French Guiana.

Hugo Jabini is a Saramaka Maroon politician and environmental leader from Suriname. In 1998 he became the spokesman of the Association of Saamaka Authorities. In 2007 he and Wanze Eduards were part of the VSG team that won an landrights lawsuit against the Surinamese government in international court. For their work in the landrights struggle they shared the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2009. From 2010 to 2015 Jabini was a member of the Surinamese National Assembly, as part of the National Democratic Party (NDP).
Chandrikapersad "Chan" Santokhi is a Surinamese politician and former police officer who is the 9th president of Suriname, since 2020. After winning the 2020 elections, Santokhi was the sole nominee for president of Suriname. On 13 July, Santokhi was elected president by acclamation in an uncontested election. He was inaugurated on 16 July.
Gregory Allan Rusland is a Surinamese politician. He served as Minister for Natural Resources between 2005 and 2010. In 2012 he became leader of the National Party of Suriname. Rusland has been a member of the National Assembly since 2015.
Michael Ashwin Satyandre Adhin is a Surinamese educator, politician, and was the Vice President of Suriname between 2015 and 2020. He is a member of the National Democratic Party. At the age of 35, he became the youngest vice president in the history of Suriname to lead the Council of Ministers. Adhin is a Hindu of Indian descent.

Diana Marilva Pokie is a Surinamese politician. She was the assembly member from Brokopondo for the Brotherhood and Unity in Politics (BEP) before she was expelled. She returned to the assembly as the Brokopondo member representing the General Liberation and Development Party (ABOP) party. She became the first female vice-chairman of that party in 2019. On 16 July 2020, Pokie became Minister of Land and Forest Management. On 3 August 2021, Pokie was replaced by Dinotha Vorswijk.

Gillmore André Hoefdraad is a Surinamese economist and politician. He was Governor of the Central Bank of Suriname from 2010 until 2015, and Ministry of Finance of Suriname from 2015 to 2020. In January 2020, it was reported that US$100 million was missing from the Central Bank. In July 2021, an Interpol red notice was issued for Hoefdraad. Hoefdraad was sentenced in absentia to 12 years imprisonment on 17 December 2021.
