Kenya,officially the Republic of Kenya,is a country in East Africa. With a population of more than 47.6 million in the 2019 census,Kenya is the 28th-most-populous country in the world and 7th most populous in Africa. Kenya's capital and largest city is Nairobi,while its oldest and second-largest city,is the major port city of Mombasa,situated on Mombasa Island in the Indian Ocean and the surrounding mainland. Mombasa was the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate,which included most of what is now Kenya and southwestern Somalia,from 1889 to 1907. Other important cities include Kisumu and Nakuru. Kenya is bordered by South Sudan to the northwest,Ethiopia to the north,Somalia to the east,Uganda to the west,Tanzania to the south,and the Indian Ocean to the southeast. Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta is a Kenyan politician who served as the fourth president of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. The son of Jomo Kenyatta,Kenya's first president,he previously served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.
Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka is a Kenyan politician who was the tenth Vice-President of Kenya from 2008 to 2013. Musyoka served in the government under the late President Daniel arap Moi as the Secretary of Kenya African National Union party (1980-1988),Assistant Minister for Works (1986-1988),Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly (1988-1992),Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1993 until 1998,Minister of Education (1998-2001);and subsequently,under the late President Mwai Kibaki,he was Minister of Foreign Affairs again from 2003 to 2004,then Minister of the Environment from 2004 to 2005. He was an unsuccessful candidate in the 2007 presidential election,after which he was appointed vice-president by Kibaki in January 2008.
Raila Amolo Odinga is a Kenyan politician who served as the Prime Minister of Kenya from 2008 to 2013. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Langata Constituency from 1992 to 2013 and has been the Leader of Opposition in Kenya since 2013. He is the leader of Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party.
Sheila Yvette Oliver was an American politician who served as the second lieutenant governor of New Jersey from 2018 until her death in 2023. A member of the Democratic Party,Oliver was the first Black woman to serve as lieutenant governor of New Jersey and was the first woman of color elected to statewide office in New Jersey.
Charity Kaluki Ngilu is a Kenyan politician and the second governor elected for Kitui County. She unsuccessfully vied to be President of the Republic of Kenya in 1997. She served as Minister for Health from 2003 until 2007 and Minister of Water and Irrigation from April 2008 to 2013. She also served as Cabinet Secretary for Land,Housing and Urban Development from 2013 until 2015.
Martha Wangari Karua is a Kenyan politician. She is a former long-standing member of parliament for Gichugu Constituency and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. She was Minister for Justice until resigning from that position in April 2009. She has consistently fought for the protection of women's rights and improvements to the democratic process.
Erupting in June 2008,the Grand Regency Scandal concerns the sale of the Grand Regency Hotel in Downtown Nairobi,Kenya,from the Central Bank of Kenya to an unspecified group of Libyan investors called "Libya Arab African Investment Company". The sale was directed by Finance Minister Amos Kimunya,leading to the passage of near-unanimous censure of Kimunya by the Kenyan Parliament on 1 July 2008. On 8 July 2008 Kimunya submitted his resignation,and called for an investigation to clear his name.

General elections were held in Kenya on 4 March 2013. Voters elected the President,members of the National Assembly and newly formed Senate. They were the first elections held under the new constitution,which was approved in a 2010 referendum,and were also the first run by the new Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). They coincided with the 2013 Kenyan local elections.
The Counties of Kenya are geographical units created by the 2010 Constitution of Kenya as the new units of devolved government. They replaced the previous provincial system. The establishment and executive powers of the counties is provided in Chapter Eleven of the Constitution on devolved government,the Constitution's Fourth Schedule and any other legislation passed by the Senate of Kenya concerning counties. The counties are also single-member constituencies which elect members of the Senate,and special woman members to the National Assembly.

On 28 March 2013,Muturi won the speakership after a second round of voting by members of the National Assembly,beating former speaker Kenneth Marende by a 219–129 margin. He is currently serving as the Cabinet Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development under the July 2024 re-constituted Cabinet of H.E. President William Ruto

Mary M'Mukindia MBS is a Kenyan businessperson in the petrochemicals industry,who was CEO of the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK) from 2003 to 2008. In 2015,several major newspapers implicated her in a bribery scandal connected to the failed 2013 presidential campaign of Martha Karua,but a subsequent court case found these charges to be malicious and false. As of 2018,she works as a consultant and leadership coach.
The 2018 Kenya handshake was a political truce made on 9 March 2018 between Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The two had been the leaders of opposing political factions amidst widespread political violence and civil unrest;they had previously faced one another in the contested 2017 Kenyan general election. Under the agreement,their political feud with an agreement that Kenyatta would support Odinga in the upcoming presidential elections. Consequently,the Azimio coalition was formed,Uhuru became its chairman,and Odinga became the presidential candidate with Martha Karua as his running mate. They lost to William Ruto,who was then Kenyatta's deputy. They challenged Ruto's victory in the Supreme Court,but Chief Justice Martha Koome said his claims did not meet the evidentiary threshold and dismissed the case. At a March 2023 protest in Nairobi they demanded an audit of the IEBC election servers.
General elections were held in Kenya on Tuesday,9 August 2022. Voters elected the president,governors,senators,members of the National Assembly,and members of county assemblies.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is the current ruling political party in Kenya. Their slogan is "Kazi ni Kazi" and their symbol is a wheelbarrow. The party,initially called the Party of Development and Reforms,officially changed its name to UDA in December 2020. The party became notable in January 2021,and is allied with William Ruto,the President of Kenya. It tends to be more popular among the Kalenjin people.
The Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) was a proposed set of amendments to the Constitution of Kenya initially proposed in October 2019. In the wake of the 2017 general election annulment and subsequent re-run,incumbent President Uhuru Kenyatta mandated the formation of the Presidential Taskforce on Building Bridges to Unity Advisory on 31 May 2018. The Taskforce was assigned to provide constitutional and legislative solutions in 9 broad categories:

Azimio la Umoja–One Kenya Coalition Party,popularly referred to as Azimio la Umoja,or simply Azimio,is a Kenyan political alliance and party headed by Raila Odinga. It is composed of the Orange Democratic Movement,the Jubilee Party,NARC–Kenya,KANU,and other parties. Former president Uhuru Kenyatta is the party's patron. The alliance fielded Odinga as its presidential candidate and Martha Karua as its deputy presidential candidate in the 2022 Kenyan election,which they lost.
