Austin McCann (born 21 January 1980) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a defender. During his career, McCann played in the Scottish Premier League for Heart of Midlothian as well as having spells in both the Scottish and English football leagues.

McCann started his career with Wolves Boys Club in Glasgow [2] and then became an apprentice with Scottish League First Division Airdrieonians in 1997. Primarily considered a left fullback, he has on occasion played as a wingback or even in left midfield. He spent 3 successful seasons with Airdrie, playing 97 times and scoring 9 goals while gaining a reputation as an exciting young talent. His form attracted the attention of Premier League side Heart of Midlothian, who were seeking a replacement for the recently sold Gary Naysmith, and he moved to the Edinburgh club in February 2001.

McCann struggled to maintain a regular place in the Hearts' side during his three seasons at Tynecastle, as firstly the veteran Stephane Mahé, then latterly converted right back Alan Maybury, were preferred in the left back berth by manager Craig Levein. Consequently, Austin appeared a mere 39 times for Hearts. However, his only competitive goal for the side was a memorable final minute 30-yard strike against Celtic in 2002–03, which secured a 2–1 home win against a side which reached the UEFA Cup Final that season. McCann left Hearts in April 2004 in search of more regular first team football, initially signing a short-term deal with Clyde before agreeing to join Steve Evans' growing Scottish contingent at Boston United in the summer. McCann played 88 games in two seasons for the Pilgrims, scoring 1 goal against Cambridge United, [4] before joining Notts County when his contract at York Street expired in the summer of 2006.

Return to Scotland

In February 2008, McCann signed a pre-contract deal with Scottish First Division side Dunfermline Athletic. [5] He moved to the First Division side on the 19 May 2008. [6] [7] He was appointed club captain, and in 2011, he won the first division championship. He scored his first and only goal for the club in a 1–0 win at Hibernian on 5 November 2011. [8] He was released by the club after his contract expired at the end of the 2011/12 season.

McCann signed for Ayr United during the 2012 summer transfer window. [9]

On 1 June 2013 he signed a contract with his hometown club Clydebank, [10] where he played for two seasons before retiring from football.

Season 2006–07 was a mixed season for Hibernian; their league form suffered from extended cup runs, and they eventually finished sixth. The reward for their cup form was a first trophy in 16 years, thrashing Kilmarnock 5–1 in the final to lift the CIS Cup. Hibs were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in a semi-final replay by Dunfermline.

The 2008–09 season will be Dunfermline Athletic's 2nd season in the Scottish First Division after being relegated from the Scottish Premier League in 2007.

Callum Fordyce is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a centre-back, and is a player-assistant manager for Airdrieonians. Fordyce started his career as a youth player with Hibernian and Livingston, before signing with the Lions on a permanent senior contract, before going on to play for Dunfermline Athletic and Queen of the South. Fordyce also had a loan spell at Clyde whilst at the West Lothian club.

Rhys McCabe is a Scottish footballer and coach who plays as a central midfielder, and is the player-manager of Scottish Championship club Airdrieonians.

Season 1996–97 was difficult for Hibs, as the club finished ninth in the Premier Division and only avoided relegation to the First Division by winning a playoff against Airdrie. There was also disappointment in the cup competitions, as the club were beaten by Celtic in the Scottish Cup, and Rangers in the League Cup. Manager Alex Miller was sacked in late September and replaced temporarily by Jocky Scott, before Jim Duffy took charge.

Ryan Wallace is a Scottish professional footballer who plays as a forward for Dumbarton. He started his career at Heart of Midlothian, before moving on to play for Airdrie United, East Fife, Dunfermline Athletic, Albion Rovers, Stranraer and Arbroath, as well as Raith Rovers where he had a short loan spell.

Airdrieonians Football Club is a Scottish professional football team in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, who are members of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) and play in the Scottish Championship. They were formed in 2002 as Airdrie United Football Club following the liquidation of the original Airdrieonians club, formed in 1878. The club's official name was changed in 2013 with the approval of the Scottish Football Association to the traditional name of Airdrieonians.
