The Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) is a not for profit organisation that represents over 1800 Australian orthopaedic surgeons.

History

The association was formed over several meetings in 1936. At the first, 6 October 1936, a subcommittee was created to draft a constitution. At a meeting on 27 April 1937, foundation members were officially declared and Edmund Vance was elected president. The draft constitution was amended and adopted. [1]

On 10 November 2021 at the conclusion of AOA's 81st Annual General Meeting, Annette Holian was made the association's first female president in its 85-year history. [2]

Structure and Governance

AOA's Board of Directors, which governs the Association, is elected by its Fellows. The Board appoints a Chief Executive Officer, who implements strategy and manages the operations of the organisation.

One current focus of the efforts of the administration (represented by CEO Adrian Cosenza) and leadership (represented by AOA President Annette Holian) is a deep commitment to "encouraging ethical practices and driving cultural change" with regard to interactions between surgical professionals and medical industry bodies, as recognised by their invitation to attend consecutive Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summits. [3]

Activities

AOA provides orthopaedic surgeons and trainees with specialist education, training and continuing professional development (CPD). They provide information and advice to the public relating to musculoskeletal conditions and treatment, [4] and support scientific research relating to orthopaedic surgery. [5] They also participate and organise humanitarian programs in Australia and internationally. [6]

AOA National Joint Replacement Registry

The Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry (AOANJRR) monitors the performance of joint replacement operations across Australia. [7] The Registry began collecting data in limited states in September 1999, and a state-by-state introduction saw national coverage achieved in 2002. All public and private hospitals at which arthroplasty is performed voluntarily submit data concerning operations, and verification processes have established that information is submitted to the Registry on more than 99% of such operations. [8] [9]

One of the aims of the Registry is to enable the identification of medical devices and implants requiring higher-than-anticipated rates of revision. Such identification through Registry data can lead to prostheses being withdrawn from the market. When investigations by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) results in regulatory action, surgeons who use the implants in question are notified of outcomes. [10] [11]

Orthopaedic Outreach

AOA has strong ties with, and provides significant support to, Orthopaedic Outreach, a charitable organisation through which Australian orthopaedic surgeons travel to poor regions of the Asia Pacific to provide free operations and care to impoverished members of societies in which appropriate surgical care is either unattainable or non-existent. Orthopaedic Outreach has been identified as the "volunteer service arm of the Australian Orthopaedic Association" [12] by Associate Professor Graham Gumley, Orthopaedic Outreach Chair, and the vast majority of the surgeons who volunteer through the service are AOA members. [13]

Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant, that is, a hip prosthesis. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi/semi(half) replacement. Such joint replacement orthopaedic surgery is generally conducted to relieve arthritis pain or in some hip fractures. A total hip replacement consists of replacing both the acetabulum and the femoral head while hemiarthroplasty generally only replaces the femoral head. Hip replacement is one of the most common orthopaedic operations, though patient satisfaction varies widely. Approximately 58% of total hip replacements are estimated to last 25 years. The average cost of a total hip replacement in 2012 was $40,364 in the United States, and about $7,700 to $12,000 in most European countries.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Implant (medicine)</span> Device surgically placed within the body for medical purposes

An implant is a medical device manufactured to replace a missing biological structure, support a damaged biological structure, or enhance an existing biological structure. For example, an implant may be a rod, used to strengthen weak bones. Medical implants are human-made devices, in contrast to a transplant, which is a transplanted biomedical tissue. The surface of implants that contact the body might be made of a biomedical material such as titanium, silicone, or apatite depending on what is the most functional. In 2018, for example, American Elements developed a nickel alloy powder for 3D printing robust, long-lasting, and biocompatible medical implants. In some cases implants contain electronics, e.g. artificial pacemaker and cochlear implants. Some implants are bioactive, such as subcutaneous drug delivery devices in the form of implantable pills or drug-eluting stents.

DePuy Synthes is a franchise of orthopaedic and neurosurgery companies. Acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 1998, its companies form part of the Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices group. DePuy develops and markets products under the Codman, DePuy Mitek, DePuy Orthopaedics and DePuy Spine brands.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is the medicine and therapeutic regulatory agency of the Australian Government. As part of the Department of Health and Aged Care, the TGA regulates the quality, supply and advertising of medicines, pathology devices, medical devices, blood products and most other therapeutics. Any items that claim to have a therapeutic effect, are involved in the administration of medication, or are otherwise covered by the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989, the Therapeutic Goods Regulations 1990, or a ministerial order, must be approved by the TGA and registered in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Knee replacement</span> Surgical procedure

Knee replacement, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace the weight-bearing surfaces of the knee joint to relieve pain and disability, most commonly offered when joint pain is not diminished by conservative sources. It may also be performed for other knee diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. In patients with severe deformity from advanced rheumatoid arthritis, trauma, or long-standing osteoarthritis, the surgery may be more complicated and carry higher risk. Osteoporosis does not typically cause knee pain, deformity, or inflammation, and is not a reason to perform knee replacement.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Computer-assisted orthopedic surgery</span>

Computer-assisted orthopedic surgery or computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery is a discipline where computer technology is applied pre-, intra- and/or post-operatively to improve the outcome of orthopedic surgical procedures. Although records show that it has been implemented since the 1990s, CAOS is still an active research discipline which brings together orthopedic practitioners with traditionally technical disciplines, such as engineering, computer science and robotics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Joint replacement</span> Orthopedic surgery to replace a joint

Joint replacement is a procedure of orthopedic surgery known also as arthroplasty, in which an arthritic or dysfunctional joint surface is replaced with an orthopedic prosthesis. Joint replacement is considered as a treatment when severe joint pain or dysfunction is not alleviated by less-invasive therapies. Joint replacement surgery is often indicated from various joint diseases, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Sir John Charnley, was an English orthopaedic surgeon. He pioneered the hip replacement operation, which is now one of the most common operations both in the UK and elsewhere in the world, and created the "Wrightington centre for hip surgery". He also demonstrated the fundamental importance of bony compression in operations to arthrodese (fuse) joints, in particular the knee, ankle and shoulder.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hip resurfacing</span>

Hip resurfacing has been developed as a surgical alternative to total hip replacement (THR). The procedure consists of placing a cap, which is hollow and shaped like a mushroom, over the head of the femur while a matching metal cup is placed in the acetabulum, replacing the articulating surfaces of the person's hip joint and removing very little bone compared to a THR. When the person moves the hip, the movement of the joint induces synovial fluid to flow between the hard metal bearing surfaces lubricating them when the components are placed in the correct position. The surgeon's level of experience with hip resurfacing is most important; therefore, the selection of the right surgeon is crucial for a successful outcome. Health-related quality of life measures are markedly improved and the person's satisfaction is favorable after hip resurfacing arthroplasty.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty</span>

Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) is a surgical procedure used to relieve arthritis in one of the knee compartments in which the damaged parts of the knee are replaced. UKA surgery may reduce post-operative pain and have a shorter recovery period than a total knee replacement procedure, particularly in people over 75 years of age. Moreover, UKAs may require a smaller incision, less tissue damage, and faster recovery times.

Kevin Robert Stone is an American physician, orthopedic surgeon, clinician, researcher, and company founder of The Stone Clinic and the Stone Research Foundation in San Francisco.

"Professor" Derek McMinn is a British orthopaedic surgeon and inventor who practised in Birmingham, United Kingdom at the BMI Edgbaston Hospital until his suspension in 2020. McMinn is currently under police investigation for allegedly keeping the body parts of thousands of patients over a 25-year period.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Kantilal Hastimal Sancheti</span> Indian surgeon

Kantilal H. Sancheti is an orthopaedic physician who invented India's first indigenous knee implant, the Indus Knee, and founder of Maharashtra's first orthopaedic dedicated specialty hospital.

The British Orthopaedic Association is a professional association in Britain for doctors who specialize in orthopaedic surgery.

Ashok Rajgopal is an Indian orthopaedic surgeon, credited with close to 20,000 Arthroscopic and over 35,000 Total Knee Arthroplasty surgeries and reported to be one of the most experienced in his field in India. He was honoured by the Government of India in 2014, by bestowing on him the Padmashri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his services to the fields of orthopaedic surgery. He has also been awarded the Dr. BC Roy award by the Medical Council of India to "Recognize the Best Talents in Encouraging the Development of Specialties in Different Branches in Medicine" for 2014.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Robin Ling</span> English surgeon (1927–2017)

Robin Sydney Mackwood Ling, was an English surgeon who invented the Exeter hip system, a hip replacement. As an orthopaedic surgeon at the Princess Elizabeth orthopaedic hospital, Exeter, he co-operated with an engineer, Dr. Clive Lee from the University of Exeter, to develop a new hip replacement. Their work led to improved quality of life for millions of people.

The Therapeutic Goods Act 1989 is an Act of the Commonwealth of Australia which regulates therapeutic goods. The Act is administered by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), which is part of the Commonwealth Department of Health. The statutory framework set out in the Act is supplemented by the Therapeutic Goods Regulations 1990 and the Therapeutic Goods Regulations 2002.

Justin Peter Cobb is a British professor of orthopaedic surgery at Imperial College London, known for introducing medical robotics into orthopaedic surgery. He is a member of the Royal Medical Household and was royal orthopaedic surgeon to the Queen. He is on the staff at King Edward VII's Hospital (KEVII) and is civilian advisor in orthopaedics to the Royal Air Force (RAF). His research has also included themes relating to designing new devices such as for ceramic hip resurfacing, 3D printing in orthopaedics, and training in surgical skills. He is a director of the MSk laboratory based in the Sir Michael Uren Hub.

Brian Davies is a British emeritus professor of medical robotics at Imperial College London. He developed Probot, the first robotic device to operate upon a human being. Later, he developed the haptic based robotic assistant known as 'Acrobot', the first haptic based robot to be used in orthopaedic surgery. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.
