Lily Ava Stokes (born 12 August 1993), also known as Ava Lily, is an English singer-songwriter.

Career

After uploading a cover of "I Can't Make You Love Me" to YouTube, [2] Stokes was discovered by Naughty Boy and signed to Virgin EMI Records. Stokes released her debut single "Painkiller" in 2016. [3] She attended songwriting sessions with Emeli Sandé and James Arthur, and co-wrote Zayn Malik's song "Common" for his second album Icarus Falls . [4] She met Malik through the production duo MYKL. [5] She also collaborated with Professor Green and Laura Mvula.

For the Six Chair Challenge on the 2018 season of The X Factor , Stokes performed a cover the One Direction song "Perfect". However, she did not continue on with the competition, which Louis Tomlinson called a "shame". [6]

Stokes later left her label to go independent. In 2020, she released the singles "Blameless" and "Closure", [7] along with her debut EP Higher Love. [8] Her second EP Sunday Music Club, [9] released in 2023, was written while Stokes was in the process of going sober, a topic touched on in "Sad Party" and "Happy Switch". [10] [11] She also released the single "Nobody Breaks My Heart Like I Do". [12] After playing number of Sofar Sounds gigs, later in 2023, Stokes reunited with Louis Tomlinson as one of the openers on the Europe leg of his Faith in the Future World Tour. [13]

Artistry

Stokes grew up listening to Tracy Chapman, Christina Aguilera, and Britney Spears, [14] and was inspired to start writing music by Amy Winehouse. [2] She described songwriting as an "outlet for all my emotions". [15]

When asked in 2020, Stokes named H.E.R, Sabrina Claudio, Summer Walker, Giveon, Sonder, and Masego as her influences. She said she would like to collaborate with James Bay, Julia Michaels, Jhené Aiko, Snoh Aalegra, The 1975, and John Mayer. [5] She later called Miley Cyrus her "favourite voice in pop". [16]

Tierra Umi Wilson, known mononymously as Umi, is an American singer and songwriter. Born in Seattle, Washington, she attended the University of Southern California, but dropped out in 2019 in order to pursue music. She is best known for her 2018 song "Remember Me", which has over 160 million streams on Spotify. She also accompanied Conan Gray as an opening act on his Comfort Crowd Tour in 2019. The same year, she released her second EP, Love Language. In 2020, she released the EP Introspection, along with a short film to accompany the project. Ava Grace Kolker is an American teen actress and singer. Kolker's roles include Ava Morgenstern on the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World (2014–2017), and Olive Rozalski on Sydney to the Max (2019–2021). In film, she portrayed Lily in Scary Movie 5 (2013), Heather in Miss Meadows (2014), Boot in Message from the King (2016) and Young Elise Rainer in Insidious: The Last Key (2018). Kolker made her music debut with the single "The Good Ones" in July 2019. She subsequently released several other songs, including "When Will It Be Tomorrow" (2020), "Eventually" (2020), "Who Do You Think You Are" (2021), "Ahead of Me" (2022), and her debut EP, Ballerina, consisting of six songs and released in June 2023.

Upon release, Nobody Is Listening received generally favorable reviews from critics; the album peaked at number 44 on the US Billboard 200 and number 17 on the UK Albums Chart.
