Avedøre is a south-western suburb of Copenhagen located in Hvidovre Municipality.

Description

The city is mostly made up of concrete blocks and row-housing, but some people residing in Avedøre live in detached single-family houses with gardens. One major high-rise block called "Store Hus" (lit. English: Grand House) dominates the suburb's skyline. The city has a relatively high rate of crime and many inhabitants are unemployed [ citation needed ]. Approximately 16,000 persons live in Avedøre, and approx. 60% of the inhabitants is either immigrant or born by immigrants, mainly from Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Spain and Turkey.

History

Prior to 1 April 1974, Avedøre was an exclave of Glostrup Municipality. On that date, Avedøre was combined with neighboring Hvidovre Municipality.

Avedøre is served by Avedøre railway station, located on the Køge radial of Copenhagen's S-train network. The station is served regularly by trains on the A-line which have a journey time to central Copenhagen of around 15 minutes. [1]

It is currently used mostly for association football matches and is the home stadium of Hvidovre IF, Hvidovre AM (athletics) and previously Hvidovre Stars. The exhibition field has a lighting installation with a light intensity of 1000 lux, undersoil heating and have been approved for televised matches in the Danish Superliga. The stadium is part of a sports complex, that covers an area of 72,000 m² and also consists of four association football fields, outdoor athletic facilities, a hall for indoor athletics, a hall with two indoor tennis courts, five outdoor tennis courts, a fitness center, a cafeteria including rooms for club members and meetings. The Finger Plan is an urban plan from 1947 which provides a strategy for the development of the Copenhagen metropolitan area, Denmark. According to the plan, Copenhagen is to develop along five 'fingers', centred on S-train commuter rail lines, which extend from the 'palm', that is the dense urban fabric of central Copenhagen. In between the fingers, green "wedges" are intended to provide land for agriculture and recreational purposes.

Transport in Copenhagen and the surrounding area relies on a well-established infrastructure making it a hub in Northern Europe due to its road and rail networks as well as its international airport. Thanks to its many cycle tracks, Copenhagen is considered one of the world's most bicycle-friendly cities. The metro and S-train systems are key features of the city's well-developed public transport facilities. Since July 2000, the Øresund Bridge has served as a road and rail link to Malmö in Sweden. The city is also served by ferry connections to Oslo in Norway while its award-winning harbour is an ever more popular port of call for cruise ships.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Avedøre Airfield</span>

Avedøre Airfield, located in Hvidovre Municipality, west of central Copenhagen, is the oldest operational airfield in Denmark. It is situated at the intersection of Gammel Køge Landevej with the Ring 3 motorway. It is now known s Aeronautisk Aktivitetscenter Avedøre (AAA) and used as a centre for vintage aircraft. The oldest buildings at the site are two wooden hangars that date from its establishment in 1917.

Avedørelejren is a former military base in Avedøre, Hvidovre Municipality, some 10 km west of Copenhagen, Denmark. It has now been converted into a mixed-use development. It is home to Filmbyen and the Circus Museum.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Greater Copenhagen Light Rail</span> Light rail in Greater Copenhagen

Greater Copenhagen Light Rail is a planned electric light rail system crossing the lines of the S-train in Greater Copenhagen, Denmark, parallel to but outside the borders of Copenhagen Municipality. Its first stage is known as the Ring 3 Light Rail, for which construction started in 2018. It will go from Lundtofte Park north of Copenhagen to Ishøj station in the southwest, and it is expected to open in 2025, with an annual ridership of 13-14 million projected. The line will be owned by the Ringby-Letbanesamarbejdet, which is a collaboration between the municipalities serviced or affected by the line.

Ølstykke-Stenløse is a city located in the Egedal Municipality, in the Capital Region of Denmark. Both Ølstykke and Stenløse has been counted as one city by Statistics Denmark from 1 January 2010, and it forms the eastern part of the city closest to Copenhagen, 25 kilometers in a straight line northwest of City Hall Square, as well as Gammel Ølstykke and Ølstykke Stationsby in the west. It is Denmark's 29th largest city (2024), with a population of 23,344 (2024). It is the largest city in Egedal Municipality and more than half of the municipality's residents live within the city.
