The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women and was founded to create a better future for women's tennis. The WTA's corporate headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida, with its European headquarters in London and its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing.
The Hamburg European Open is an annual tennis tournament for professional players held in Hamburg, Germany and part of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. Before 2021, it was a male-only event.
The Pan Pacific Open, currently sponsored by Toray Industries, is a women's outdoor hardcourt tennis tournament held annually in Tokyo, Japan. It is a WTA 500-level tournament.
The LA Women's Tennis Championships was a Premier-level tennis tournament on the WTA Tour held in Carson, California, a suburb of Los Angeles. The tournament was played on outdoor hard courts and a part of the US Open Series.
The Amelia Island Championships was a women's tennis tournament held in Amelia Island Plantation and later Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, United States. The Women's Tennis Association event was an International series tournament played on outdoor green clay courts from 1980 to 2010.
The WTA Auckland Open is a professional women's tennis tournament in Auckland, New Zealand. The tournament is played annually, in the first week of January, at the ASB Tennis Centre in the suburb of Parnell, just east of the Central Business District. It is an International level tournament in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) World Tour. The equivalent men's event, the ATP Auckland Open, is played in the following week, immediately ahead of the first Grand Slam tournament of the season, the Australian Open.
The Athens Trophy is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament held annually in Athens in Greece from 1986 to 1990, played on outdoor clay courts at Athens Lawn Tennis Club. In 1990 the tournament was classed as a Tier V event. In 2008 the tournament was renewed under the new name of the Vogue Athens Open, an ITF $100,000 tournament.
The Ameritech Cup is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament held every year from 1971 until 1997 in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. Its sponsors were Virginia Slims from 1971 to 1978 and again from 1983 to 1994, Avon from 1979 to 1982 and Ameritech from 1995 to 1997. The tournament was classified as Tier III in 1988-1989, Tier I in 1990 and Tier II until 1997, and was played on indoor carpet courts.
The WTA Austrian Open is a WTA Tour affiliated women's tennis tournament held off and on from 1968. In the Open Era, seven locations hosted the event: Pörtschach in 1968 and 1999; Kitzbühel from 1969 to 1983 and from 1990 to 1993; Vienna in 1979 and from 2001 to 2004; Bregenz from 1985 to 1986; Maria Lankowitz from 1994 to 1998, Klagenfurt in 2000 and Bad Gastein from 2007 to 2015 where it took place as Nürnberger Gastein Ladies. The tournament which is held on outdoor clay courts was not contested in 1984, 1987 to 1989 and from 2005 to 2006.
The Ladies Open Lausanne originally founded in 1899 as the Swiss International Championships. It is a women's professional tennis tournament which is currently played in Lausanne but has played in a number of locations in Switzerland.
The Virginia Slims of Washington, now defunct, was a Grand Prix and WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament played from 1972 to 1991. It was held in Washington, D.C. in the United States and played on indoor carpet courts from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1990. From 1976 to 1977, it was played on indoor hard courts and in the final year it was played on outdoor hard courts.
The Virginia Slims of Kansas is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament played from 1978 to 1990. It was held in Kansas City, Kansas in the United States from 1978 to 1983 and in Wichita, Kansas in the United States from 1986 to 1990, and was played on indoor hard courts in 1978 and from 1988 to 1990, on indoor carpet courts from 1980 to 1982 and from 1986 to 1987, and on outdoor hard courts in 1983.
The United Airlines Tournament of Champions is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated tennis tournament played from 1980 to 1986. It was held in Orlando, Florida in the United States from 1980 through 1985, where it was played on outdoor hard courts at the Greenelefe Golf & Tennis Resort from 1980 through 1983 and on clay courts at the Grand Cypress resort in 1984 and 1985. In 1986 the tournament moved to Marco Island, Florida where it was played on clay courts. Only players who had won a tournament with prize money of at least $20,000 during the previous year were eligible to enter the event.
The Eckerd Open is a defunct WTA Tour affiliated women's tennis tournament founded in 1953 as a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament called the Masters Invitational tournament in St Augustine, Florida. In 1954 that event moved to Jacksonville, Florida until 1959. In 1960 the event moved to St Petersburg. It remained at the former location until 1974. After the combined event the St. Petersburg Masters Invitational finished in 1970. The womens event continued under various brand names and various locations in the Tampa Bay Area until it was abolished in 1990.
The Taipei Women's Championships is a defunct WTA Tour-affiliated women's tennis tournament played from 1986 to 1989 and from 1992 to 1994. It was held in Taipei, Taiwan and played on indoor carpet courts from 1986 to 1988, and on outdoor hard courts in 1989 and from 1992 to 1994. The 1980s tours were sponsored partly by Virginia Slims, and the 1990s events were sponsored by Kraft Foods and Procter & Gamble, the latter of which were named P&G Taiwan Women's Open or Taiwan Open in short. Anne Minter and Shi-Ting Wang were the most successful players at the tournament, each winning the singles competition twice.
The Baku Cup was a professional women's tennis tournament held in Baku, Azerbaijan. It made its debut on the 2011 WTA Tour and as one of the international tier of events. This WTA Tour event is an international tournament and was played at the Baku Tennis Academy on outdoor hardcourts. The 2015 Baku Cup was the last edition.
The 1986 Virginia Slims World Championship Series was the 16th season since the foundation of the Women's Tennis Association. It commenced on March 24, 1986, and concluded in December, 1986 after 41 events. The season was abbreviated in order to return the tour to a calendar year basis.

It was the 11th edition of the event and was played from March 24 through March 28, 1982 on indoor carpet courts at the Madison Square Garden in New York City, United States. Fifth-seeded Sylvia Hanika won the singles title, after trailing Navratilova 1–6, 1–3 in the final, and earned $100,000 first-prize money.
The 1982 Family Circle Cup was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts at the Sea Pines Racquet Club on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in the United States that was part of the 1982 Avon Championships World Championship Series. It was the 10th edition of the tournament and was held from April 5 through April 11, 1982. Second-seeded Martina Navratilova won the singles title and earned $34,000 first-prize money.
The Shenzhen Open is a professional women's tennis tournament. It is played on outdoor hard courts of the Shenzhen Longgang Tennis Center, which has 32 outdoor and indoor courts and a 4,000-seat stadium. The tournament made its debut on the WTA Tour in 2013 in Shenzhen, China. The tournament takes place during the first week of the year, as a warm-up event two weeks prior the Australian Open.
