The cities of Borama and Awdal are located on the far northern tip of Somalia. In 1991, about 1000 civilians including children were killed in the six weeks after the Somali National Movement militia entered Borama from Ethiopia. [1] The militia was commanded by colonel Muse Bihi, who is the present-day Somaliland president.
Awdal is a region in Somaliland. It was separated from Woqooyi Galbeed and became a province in 1984; it is the most northwesterly province of Somaliland. To the east it borders Maroodi Jeex and to its north-west it borders Djibouti, to its south and south-west lies Ethiopia and the Gulf of Aden to its north.
