Antigua and Barbuda is a sovereign island country in the West Indies. It lies at the conjuncture of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean in the Leeward Islands part of the Lesser Antilles.
Saint Mary, officially the Parish of Saint Mary, is a parish of Antigua and Barbuda on the island of Antigua. Saint Mary borders Saint John to the north, and Saint Paul to the east. Saint Mary is dominated by the Shekerley Mountains, and its northern border is largely defined by the mountains, and by Cooks Creek. The largest city in the parish is Bolands, home to the Jolly Harbour neighbourhood, and the parish church is located in Old Road. Saint Mary was created with the other five original parishes on 11 January 1692. It had a population of 7,341 in 2011, and 8,141 in 2018.
Saint Paul is a civil parish of Antigua and Barbuda, located in the central−southern area of Antigua island. It had a population of 9,004 in 2018.
Saint Peter is a civil parish of Antigua and Barbuda, located on northeastern Antigua island. It had a population of 5,325 in 2011.
Saint John is a civil parish of Antigua and Barbuda, located on the island of Antigua. It is the most populous parish of Antigua and Barbuda, with a population of 51,737 in 2011, and an estimated population of 56,736 in 2018. The plurality of the population of the parish is located within the country’s capital, St. John’s.
Area code 268 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for Antigua and Barbuda. The area code was activated on 1 April 1996, by division of numbering plan area 809 which used to comprise all Caribbean countries and Bermuda. A permissive dialing period during which the old area code could still be used for existing telephone numbers was in effect for a period of one year until March 31, 1997. However, all new local exchanges created after the in-service date, could only be reached with the new area code.<ref name="il96">
The Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda consists of the King of Antigua and Barbuda, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The House of Representatives of Antigua and Barbuda is the lower chamber of the country's bicameral parliament. Each of the constituencies created in accordance with section 62 of the Constitution shall elect one representative to the House in a direct election in accordance with the procedures specified by or pursuant to any law, subject to the rules of this Constitution. Unless he is prohibited by law from registration as a voter for the purpose of electing a member of the House, every Commonwealth citizen who is eighteen years of age or older and who meets the requirements relating to residence or domicile in Antigua and Barbuda as prescribed by Parliament is entitled to be registered as such a voter in accordance with the provisions of any law in that regard, and no other person may be registered. Every person who is registered to vote in any constituency shall, unless prohibited from doing so by any law, be entitled to vote in accordance with the provisions of any law in that regard in any election of members of the House in that constituency. Voting is free and must be done by secret ballot in accordance with any rules that Parliament may impose during House member elections.
The Senate is the Upper House of Parliament of Antigua and Barbuda. It consists of 17 members appointed by the Governor General. Ten members are appointed on the advice of the Prime Minister, four on the advice of the Leader of the Opposition, one on the advice of the Barbuda Council, one resident of Barbuda on the advice of the Prime Minister, and one at the Governor General's discretion. Subject to the provisions of Section 30 of the Constitution, any person who at the time of his appointment: is a citizen; is twenty-one years of age or older; has lived in Antigua and Barbuda for the twelve months immediately prior to the date of his appointment; and is able to speak and, unless disabled by blindness or another physical condition, to read the English language with enough proficiency to allow him to take an active part in the proceedings.
The Barbuda Council is a local authority that manages the internal affairs on the island of Barbuda.
The University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA) is a private, for-profit medical and nursing school located in Dow's Hill near Falmouth, Antigua, in the Caribbean. UHSA confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
Antigua and Barbuda lie in the eastern arc of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean Sea. Antigua is 650 km (400 mi) southeast of Puerto Rico; Barbuda lies 48 km (30 mi) due north of Antigua, and the uninhabited island of Redonda is 56 km (35 mi) southwest of Antigua.
Fitches Creek is an affluent coastal neighbourhood in Antigua and Barbuda, located on the island of Antigua. It was named for the English surname Fitch, which may have been the family name of some who originally owned the surrounding land. The surrounding area is now a neighborhood in the parish of Saint George.
