AzMeCo (formally known as the Azerbaijan Methanol Company [3] ) is a methanol production company located in Azerbaijan. [4] The company is primarily focused on petrochemical projects, [5] specifically the construction and operation of gas and methanol factories. [3] AzMeCo also works on hydrocarbon projects in the Caspian Sea. [1] [6]

History

2007

AzMeCo company was founded in 2007. [1]

2012

In November 2012, the International Bank of Azerbaijan, Asia House, and TheCityUK organized a conference known as the Caspian Corridor Conference. The IBA, Asia House, and TheCityUK created a business framework at the conference upon which the future sale and marketing of AzMeCo's methanol was based. [7]

Additionally, in 2012 BP agreed to buy methanol from AzMeCo. [4] According to petrochemical industry research service Petrochemicals ResearchViews and Azerbaijani newspaper Today.Az, AzMeCo agreed to sell its entire methanol production exclusively to BP. [7] [8]

2013

AzMeCo built the first methanol plant in the South Caucasus region and Central Asia, according to Azer News. [6] AzMeCo estimates that the plant will produce 560,000 tonnes of methanol per year. [9] The International Bank of Azerbaijan and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) financed the construction of the plant. [10]

2015

AzMeCo declared it would align with Sovereign Wealth Fund conglomerates to invest with low risk in productive overseas projects.

Future

In 2013, the Chairman of AzMeCo told reporters that the company would invest in petrochemical and oil refinery plants in Libya. [8]

The economy of Azerbaijan has completed its post-Soviet transition into a major oil-based economy, from one where the state played the major role. The transition to oil production led to remarkable growth figures as projects came online; reaching 26.4% in 2005 and 34.6% in 2006 before subsiding to 10.8% and 9.3% in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline is a 1,768 kilometres (1,099 mi) long crude oil pipeline from the Azeri–Chirag–Gunashli oil field in the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. It connects Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan and Ceyhan, a port on the south-eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey, via Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. It is the second-longest oil pipeline in the former Soviet Union, after the Druzhba pipeline. The first oil that was pumped from the Baku end of the pipeline reached Ceyhan on 28 May 2006.

The State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan, largely known by its abbreviation SOCAR, is fully state-owned national oil and gas company headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan. The company produces oil and natural gas from onshore and offshore fields in the Azerbaijani segment of the Caspian Sea. It operates the country's only oil refinery, one gas processing plant and runs several oil and gas export pipelines throughout the country. It owns fuel filling station networks under the SOCAR brand in Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine, Romania, Switzerland, and Austria.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Shah Deniz gas field</span>

Shah Deniz gas field is the largest natural gas field in Azerbaijan. It is situated in the South Caspian Sea, off the coast of Azerbaijan, approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) southeast of Baku, at a depth of 600 metres (2,000 ft). The field covers approximately 860 square kilometres (330 sq mi). Stretching out over 140 square kilometres, the reservoir is similar in size and shape to Manhattan Island.

The petroleum industry in Azerbaijan produces about 873,260 barrels (138,837 m3) of oil per day and 29 billion cubic meters of gas per year as of 2013. Azerbaijan is one of the birthplaces of the oil industry.

Azerbaijan International Operating Company is a consortium formed to implement the terms of the “Agreement on the Joint Development and Production Sharing for the Azeri and Chirag Fields and the Deep Water Portion of the Gunashli Field in the Azerbaijan Sector of the Caspian Sea” signed among SOCAR and international companies.

The Baku–Novorossiysk pipeline is an 1,330-kilometre (830 mi) long oil pipeline, which runs from the Sangachal Terminal near Baku to the Novorossiysk terminal at the Black Sea coast in Russia. The Azerbaijani section of the pipeline is operated by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) and the Russian section is operated by Transneft.

The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland body of water, often described as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. An endorheic basin, it lies between Europe and Asia; east of the Caucasus, west of the broad steppe of Central Asia, south of the fertile plains of Southern Russia in Eastern Europe, and north of the mountainous Iranian Plateau of Western Asia. It covers a surface area of 371,000 km2 (143,000 sq mi), an area approximately equal to that of Japan, with a volume of 78,200 km3 (19,000 cu mi). It has a salinity of approximately 1.2%, about a third of the salinity of average seawater. It is bounded by Kazakhstan to the northeast, Russia to the northwest, Azerbaijan to the southwest, Iran to the south, and Turkmenistan to the southeast.

Bilateral relations exist between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Bulgaria in political, socio-economic, cultural and other spheres. Cooperation is carried out in such areas as transport and transit of goods, tourism, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, science and high technologies, education, military equipment, etc.

The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline is a natural gas pipeline in Turkey. It is the central part of the Southern Gas Corridor, which connects the giant Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan to Europe through the South Caucasus Pipeline and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline. The pipeline has a strategic importance for both Azerbaijan and Turkey. It allows the first Azerbaijani gas exports to Europe, beyond Turkey. It also strengthens the role of Turkey as a regional energy hub.

AzeriCard is an Azerbaijani bank card processing company. The International Bank of Azerbaijan owns 100 percent of AzeriCard.

International Insurance Company ("ICC") is an insurance company based in Baku, Azerbaijan. In the Azerbaijani language, it is called Beynəlxalq Sığorta Şirkətinin. The company was founded by the International Bank of Azerbaijan.

Inter Glass ASC is an Azerbaijani glass manufacturing company created in December 2008. According to the company, it is one of the biggest glass producers in the Caucasus region.
