Azad is a movie theater located in Johnson Road, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Azad is one of the oldest movie theaters and the fourth oldest movie theater in the capital of the country. [1]
In 1929, Mukul Banerjee, the then zamindar of Murapara, established a movie theater named "Mukul Talkies" in Old Dhaka. R. C. Majumdar, the then vice chancellors of Dhaka University, inaugurated the movie theater. On the opening day, Mukul Talkies screened the film The Last Kiss , which is said to be the first silent film produced in Dhaka. [2] [3] Yar Mohammad Khan rented Mukul Theatre to hold the Awami League council meeting in the early in 1950s. [4] Mukul Talkies was renamed Azad Cinema in 1964 after it was bought by Sher Ali Ramji, a Bollywood film producer. [2] [3] Ten years later, the ownership of the movie theater was transferred to A.U.M. Khalilur Rahman. [2] [3] On 23 December 2013, a fire, caused by electric short circuit, broke out in the movie theater, destroying much of its furniture. [5] The movie theater suffered during the COVID-19 pandemic and received an outstanding bill of ৳12 lakh. [6]
Azad usually shows old films. [7] It has 1100 seats. [6] Azad has three shows daily. [8]
Azad is popular for B-grade and perverted female objectified paraphilic film posters. Besides, there are allegations of involvement of drug addicts and people involved in anti-social activities with this movie theater. Its manager claimed that the posters were asked by the film distributors to put up. But he denied the second allegation. [7]

Cinema was introduced in Bangladesh in 1898 by the Bradford Bioscope Company, credited to have arranged the first film release in Bangladesh. Between 1913 and 1914, the first production company, Picture House, was opened. A 1928 short silent film titled Sukumari was the first Bengali-produced film in the region. The first full-length film, The Last Kiss, was released in 1931.
Subir Nandi was a Bangladeshi musician. He won Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer five times for his performance in the films Mahanayak (1984), Shuvoda (1986), Srabon Megher Din (1999), Megher Pore Megh (2004) and Mohua Sundori (2015). He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2019 by the Government of Bangladesh.
Shahid Hasan, known by professionally as Misha Sawdagor, is a Bangladeshi film actor known for playing villains. As of 2020, according to him, he has performed in more than 700 films. He won Bangladesh National Film Awards 3 times for his roles in the films Boss Number One (2011), Olpo Olpo Premer Golpo (2014) and Bir (2020). He first got noticed as a villain in the 1995 film Asha Bhalobasha starring Salman Shah. After Shah's death, he continued playing the villain opposite other actors, but failed to achieve any mainstream success or recognition. From 2006 onwards he started playing the main antagonist in a long string of hit movies starring Shakib Khan in the lead role and mostly Apu Biswas as the lead actress, and established himself as a leading antagonist in the Cinema of Bangladesh.
Haldaa is a 2017 Bangladeshi film directed by Tauquir Ahmed, based on the story written by Azad Bulbul. The film's plot is based on the struggling life of the fishermen of Halda River located in Chittagong, the only natural fish breeding center in Asia. The film is narrated in local Chittagonian dialect, although the dialogues are simplified for the understanding of the general audience.
The Monihar Cinema Hall, or simply the Monihar, is a movie theater located at Jessore district in Bangladesh. Country's largest movie theater Monihar was launched on 8 December 1983. Due to a construction style that was ahead of the era, the hall became popular within short time of its launch. Film lovers from different countries of the world including Japan, Korea, Africa, Australia, Russia and England came to watch movies. Monihar is widely considered as one of the most influential factors of Bangladeshi film industry.
Bidrohi is a 2022 Bangladeshi action drama film. The film is directed by Shahin Sumon and is produced by Selim Khan under the banner of Shapla Media, story, screenplay and dialogue written by Delwar Hossain Dil. It features Shakib Khan, Shabnom Bubly and Sushmita Mridula in the lead roles. Also features Misha Sawdagor, Amit Hasan, Shiba Shanu, Don, Sadek Bachchu and Saberi Alam have played supporting roles in film.

Modhumita is a movie theater located in Motijheel, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Modhumita Movies, one of the oldest movie theaters in the country, was closed on 17 March 2020 for COVID-19 epidemic, but reopened on 15 October 2021.
The Joy–Lion Cinemas, or simply the Lion Cinemas, is a multiplex located at Dhaka district in Bangladesh. It was reopened on Eid-ul-Fitr, 2022. It is one of the modern movie theaters in the country.
Razmoni, a now defunct movie theater, known as Razmoni Cinema Hall, was one of the most famous in Dhaka City. It is located on VIP Road in Kakrail. Freedom fighter Ahsanullah Moni built the Razmoni Theater in Kakrail in 1972 on 24 kathas of land. Another theater named Razia was built next to Razmoni under the same ownership. The 400-seater Razia Auditorium was smaller in size than Razmoni. In addition to the auditorium, the building housed a music and sound recording studio, an image recording studio, a dubbing studio, and an editing panel. Due to the slump in the film business and continued losses, the theater was slated to close in October 2019 and be converted into a commercial building.
Shyamoli Cinema is a movie theater located in Shyamoli, Mohammadpur Thana of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Originally the area was named "Shyamoli" after this theatre.
