Azerishiq is the Baku electrical grid operator.
The first power plant in Baku was installed in 1895 in the "Bakinski dock" on Bayil highway. In 1903, the number of power stations reached 70. [1] The Baku electricity grid began operating in 1920. [1] Until 1929 it was a member of Azneft's "Electrotok" department. In 1929, the Central Executive Committee of the USSR passed the decision to the Baku City Council. In 1963, by the Decree of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Azerbaijan, it was transferred to the Ministry of Azerenerji. From 1969 to 2000, it was a member of the executive committee of Baku City Executive Committee. The construction of large semi-substations, transmission lines, and production facilities accelerated in the 1970s. [1]
By the order of the president from 2000 to 2002, it was transferred to the Ministry of Economic Development as "Bakielektrikshebeke" OJSC. On October 20, 2000, the first turn of Baku-Heating Center No. 1 was put into operation. [1] From 2002 to 2006, it was managed by Turkish Barmek Holding A.Ş.
After restoration of Bakielektrikshebeke's activity in 2006, funds were allocated from the Presidential Reserve Fund for power development and investment. [1]
By the decree signed by President on February 10, 2015, the name of Bakielectricshebeke OJSC changed into Azerishiq OJSC. Balababa Rzayev was appointed president of Azerishiq. Functions of Azerenerji OJSC including its property and electric energy supply equipment was transferred to Azerishiq from the Cabinet of Ministers. [2] [3] According to the Presidential Order dated January 7, 2020, Vugar Ahmadov was appointed the Chairman of Azerishig. [4] [5]
In 2015, Azerishiq prepared the power distribution modernization project with the financial help of the World Bank. The aim of the project is to develop and modernize the distribution network, improve power supply reliability and enhance efficient energy. [6]
Azerishiq OJSC signed a loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) on 22 July 2016, in the framework of “Power Distribution Enhancement Investment Program – Tranche 1”. [7] In 2016, ADB approved a 750-million-dollar loan facility for the development of power distribution in Azerbaijan. [8] [9]
The economy of Azerbaijan has completed its post-Soviet transition into a major oil-based economy, from one where the state played the major role. The transition to oil production led to remarkable growth figures as projects came online; reaching 26.4% in 2005 and 34.6% in 2006 before subsiding to 10.8% and 9.3% in 2008 and 2009 respectively. The real GDP growth rate for 2011 was expected at 3.7% but had dropped to 0.1%. Large oil reserves are a major contributor to Azerbaijan's economy. The national currency, the Azerbaijani manat, was stable in 2000, depreciating 3.8% against the dollar. The budget deficit equaled 1.3% of GDP in 2000.
The State Oil Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan, largely known by its abbreviation SOCAR, is a fully state-owned national oil and gas company headquartered in Baku, Azerbaijan. The company produces oil and natural gas from onshore and offshore fields in the Azerbaijani segment of the Caspian Sea. It operates the country's only oil refinery, one gas processing plant and runs several oil and gas export pipelines throughout the country. It owns fuel filling station networks under the SOCAR brand in Azerbaijan, Turkey, Georgia, Ukraine, Romania, Switzerland, and Austria.
Baku Metro is a rapid transit system serving Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. First opened on 6 November 1967 when Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union, it has features typical of ex-Soviet systems, including very deep central stations and exquisite decorations that blend traditional Azerbaijani national motifs with Soviet ideology. At present the system has 40.7 kilometres (25.3 mi) of bi-directional tracks, made up of three lines served by 27 stations. The metro is the only one constructed in Azerbaijan, and was the fifth built in the Soviet Union. In 2015, it carried 222.0 million, passengers, an average daily ridership of approximately 608,200. In 2019, it carried 229.7 million, an average daily ridership of 629,315.
Shah Deniz gas field is the largest natural gas field in Azerbaijan. It is situated in the South Caspian Sea, off the coast of Azerbaijan, approximately 70 kilometres (43 mi) southeast of Baku, at a depth of 600 metres (2,000 ft). The field covers approximately 860 square kilometres (330 sq mi). Stretching out over 140 square kilometres, the reservoir is similar in size and shape to Manhattan Island.
The Baku Initiative is an international initiative of the European Union. It is a policy dialogue on energy and transport cooperation between the European Union, Turkey, and the former Soviet republics, undertaken as part of the INOGATE energy and TRACECA transport programmes.
The Republic of Azerbaijan and the European Union (EU) have maintained a positive relationship through the years and have become more closely linked since 1991. Azerbaijan is currently part of the European Neighborhood Policy, the Eastern Partnership and the Council of Europe. The EU is the largest foreign grant donor to and investor in Azerbaijan, both in the government sector and civil society, making available over 600 million EURO of bilateral EU assistance since 1992.
Strong foreign relations exist between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the United Kingdom. The Embassy of United Kingdom in Baku opened in 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in London opened in 1994. Both countries are members of the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
Bilateral relations exist between the Republic of Azerbaijan and Japan in the political, socio-economic, cultural, and other fields.
The Southern Gas Corridor is an initiative of the European Commission for a natural gas supply route from Caspian and Middle Eastern regions to Europe, proposed in 2008. The goal of the Southern Gas Corridor is to reduce Europe's dependency on Russian gas and add diverse sources of energy supply. The route from Azerbaijan to Europe consists of the South Caucasus Pipeline, the Trans-Anatolian Pipeline, and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline. The total investment of this route is estimated US$35 billion. The main supply source would be the Shah Deniz gas field, located in the Caspian Sea.
Two-thirds of energy in Azerbaijan comes from fossil gas and almost a third from oil. Azerbaijan is a major producer of oil and gas, much of which is exported. Most electricity is generated by gas-fired power plants.
Chirag is an offshore oil field in the Caspian Sea, located 120 km (75 mi) east of Baku, Azerbaijan, and is a part of the larger Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli (ACG) project. The production, drilling and quarters (PDQ) platform Chirag 1 (EOP) has been in operation since 1997. Chirag 1 has been producing the Early Oil from the ACG field. West Chirag is planned as an extension of ACG project.
Azerenergy (Azerenerji Joint Stock Company (JSC)) is the largest electrical power producer in the Republic of Azerbaijan. It also maintains the largest distribution network in the country, although the regional power networks are being privatized. Azerenergy was recreated as a state-owned joint stock company in 1996, by decree of President Heydar Aliyev.
The Ministry of Economy of Azerbaijan Republic is the central executive body responsible for implementing state policy and regulation in the following areas: formulating economic policy of Azerbaijan, producing macroeconomic projections, creating a favorable environment for economic development and growth, encouraging investment activity, developing entrepreneurship and industry, regulating the licensing and permit system, protecting, developing and encouraging competition, protecting the rights of consumers, implementing state procurement policy, ensuring full and timely introduction of taxes and other mandatory payments relating to the authority of the Ministry, in the state budget, management of government assets, privatization, establishing state land management system, conducting state registration and single state cadastre of immovable property.
The Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan Republic is a governmental agency within the Cabinet of Azerbaijan in charge of regulating the activities in the industry production and energy sector of Azerbaijan Republic. The ministry is headed by Parviz Shahbazov.
Kapital Bank is a commercial bank operating in Azerbaijan. Founded in 1874 as Azerbaijan Savings Bank, it is headquartered in Baku.
Azersu Open Joint Stock Company is in charge of policy and strategy for the water supply and sanitation services in Azerbaijan. The Company makes necessary arrangements for extraction of water from sources followed by treatment, transportation, and sales and takes necessary actions for wastewater treatment. Azersu OJSC engages in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of intake structures, reservoirs, pumping stations, water pipelines and sewerage collectors. The Company supplies 1434738 consumers with drinking water across the country according to status of August 1, 2018. Total served subscribers include 1354783 household and around 58878 non-household. 18244 kilometers of water lines, 3507 km of sewerage and stormwater lines under control of the company.
The overall investment climate in Azerbaijan continues to grow despite of significant challenges remain. Over the recent years, the country has made efforts to integrate more fully into the global marketplace and attract foreign investment.
Utilities in Azerbaijan cover the topic of public utility services in the territory of Azerbaijani Republic. The utilities of Azerbaijan are provided by the government owned public utilities: “Azersu” for the water supply and waste management, “Azerishiq” and “Azerenerji” for electricity, “Azerigaz” for natural gas, “Azeristiliktechizat” for district heating.
State Agency of Azerbaijan Automobile Roads or “Azeravtoyol” is an open joint-stock company that deals with automobile road industry and all relevant works related to this field such as constructions of bridges, tunnels, highways, and also control and protection these road facilities within the area of the road infrastructure. The company is responsible for renovation, repair, reconstruction and construction of automobile roads that is approximately 17529 km length (divided into national and local automobile roads that are 4385 km and 13158 km length, respectively. There are also 1299 bridges under the control of the company. Currently, 2670 km of the roads and 160 of bridges are in the occupied territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Mammadov Saleh is the chairman of the company.
