Kannada cinema Kannada language film industry

Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood or Chandanavana, is an Indian film industry of Kannada-language motion pictures. It is based in Karnataka, India. The 1934 film Sati Sulochana directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and was the first motion picture screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. The film was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded South India Movietone in Bangalore.

U. R. Ananthamurthy

Udupi Rajagopalacharya Ananthamurthy was an Indian contemporary writer and critic in the Kannada language. He was born in Thirtahalli Taluk and is considered one of the pioneers of the Navya movement. In 1994, he became the sixth Kannada writer to be honored with the Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. In 1998, he received the Padma Bhushan award from the Government of India. He was the vice-chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kerala during the late 1980s. He was one of the finalists of Man Booker International Prize for the year 2013. He remained a fervent critic of nationalistic political parties until his death from kidney failure and cardiac arrest on 22 August 2014.

The National Film Award for Best Actor, officially known as the Rajat Kamal Award for the Best Actor, is an honour presented annually at the National Film Awards of India instituted since 1967 to actors who have delivered the best performance in a leading role within the Indian film industry. Called the "State Awards for Films" when established in 1954, the National Film Awards ceremony is older than the Directorate of Film Festivals. The State Awards instituted the individual award in 1968 as the "Bharat Award for the Best Actor"; in 1975, it was renamed as the "Rajat Kamal Award for the Best Actor". Throughout the past 45 years, accounting for ties and repeat winners, the Government of India has presented a total of 52 "Best Actor" awards to 40 actors. Until 1974, winners of the National Film Award received a figurine and certificate; since 1975, they have been awarded with a "Rajat Kamal", certificate and a cash prize.

Mouni Roy Indian actress and model

Mouni Roy is an Indian actress, singer, Kathak dancer and model, who primarily works in Hindi films and television. She debuted into television in 2007 with the role of Krishna Tulsi in the soap opera Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi on Star Plus. She is best known for her roles in the commercially successful films Chaitrada Chandrama (2008), Naanu Nanna Kanasu (2010) and Shravani Subramanya (2013).

J Anoop Seelin is an Indian film music director and playback singer in the Kannada film industry. He has scored music for films including Gooli, Eddelu Manjunatha, Preethse Preethse,Yaksha, I Am Sorry Mathe Banni Preethsona,Manasology, Sidlingu, Parari, Madarangi, Naanu Avanalla...Avalu and Aatagara. C. H. Loknath was an Indian actor with more than 1000 Kannada language plays and 650 films to his credit. Loknath is affectionately known as "Uncle Loknath" or "Uppinakayi" in the industry. His last performance was in a Star Suvarna Channel's TV series titled Priyadarshini.

H. G. Dattatreya

Wing Commander Harihar Gundurao Dattatreya AE(L) (Retd.), popularly known as Dattanna, is an Indian actor who has appeared in more than 204 films and several plays. Alongside his career as an actor, he served in the Indian Air Force as a commissioned officer for over 20 years and also occupied academic positions with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). He is best known for his work in Kannada cinema, in which he appears in mostly supporting roles. In a film career of almost three decades, he has won two National Film Award – Special Jury Awards, one National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor and two Karnataka State Film Awards. He is known for his performances in Munnudi (2000), Bettada Jeeva (2011) and Bharath Stores (2012).

Naanu Avanalla...Avalu is a 2015 Indian Kannada-language film directed by B. S. Lingadevaru, based on Living Smile Vidya's autobiographical work I am Vidya. Based on the life of Living Smile Vidya, a transgender woman, the film revolves around her life as she, growing up as a boy, cherishes her feminine characteristics and begins living as a woman and depicts the appalling life of the transgender community in Indian society. Sanchari Vijay plays the role of Vidya, with Sumithra, Kunal Punekar and Sundar featuring in supporting roles.

Mouni (ಮೌನಿ) is a Kannada language film released in 2003 directed by B. S. Lingadevaru, and is based on a novella of U. R. Ananthamurthy. It stars H. G. Dattatreya and Anant Nag in the lead roles.

Kaada Beladingalu is a Kannada language film released in 2007 and directed by B. S. Lingadevaru. The movie is about the impact of urbanization on the old people living in the rural areas. The film was shot in the interior villages of Chikmagalur district.

Pavitra Lokesh is an Indian film and television actress. She appears primarily in Kannada and Telugu films playing supporting roles. The daughter of stage and film actor Mysore Lokesh, she made her film debut at the age of 16 and has since appeared in over 150 Kannada films. At 5 feet 10 inches she was the tallest actress at that time, but managing to do several noteworthy roles even acting against shorter heroes. For her performance in the Kannada film Naayi Neralu (2006), she was awarded the Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actress. Her brother Adi Lokesh and husband Suchendra Prasad are actors.

Sanchari Theatre is a cultural organization located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Sanchari Theatre is a drama troupe which is dedicated to the growth of drama. “Sanchari” is one of the Bhavas. Bhava or to emote is the ‘becoming’. Sanchari Bhavas are those always crossing feelings which are ancillary to a permanent mood. Thus the name Sanchari Theatre is fabricated. Sanchari is the brainchild of acclaimed dramatists N. Mangala, Rangayana Raghu and Gajanana T Naik. Mangala and Rangayana Raghu were resident actors of Rangayana before starting Sanchari Theatre. Sanchari produced plays that included Kannada writers and Kannada translations of plays written by William Shakespeare and other foreign writers.

Bhargavi Narayan was an Indian actress in the Kannada film industry, and a theatre artist in Karnataka, India. Her notable films include Eradu Kanasu, Hanthakana Sanchu, Pallavi Anupallavi, and Baa Nalle Madhuchandrake.

Ananya Kasaravalli Indian film actress

Ananya Kasaravalli is an Indian actress and director in the Kannada film industry, and a theatre artist in Karnataka, India. Born into a family of filmmakers, she had a successful acting career in films, television and theater before taking up filmmaking at LV Prasad Film and TV Academy, Chennai.

Girish Rao Hatwar

Girish Rao Hatwar, popularly known as Jogi, is a Kannada writer and journalist. Being one of the Kannada neo-literature writers, he has written short stories, novels and columns in many Kannada periodicals and daily newspapers. He has also written scripts for television serials, lyrics and screen play for movies. A journalist by profession, Jogi is currently a Magazine Editor of Kannada Prabha daily.
