The Cathedral of the Dormition, or the Kutaisi Cathedral, more commonly known as Bagrati Cathedral, is an 11th-century cathedral in the city of Kutaisi, in the Imereti region of Georgia. A masterpiece of medieval Georgian architecture, the cathedral suffered heavy damage throughout centuries and was reconstructed to its present state through a gradual process starting in the 1950s, with controversial conservation works concluding in 2012. These works prompted UNESCO temporarily to include the cathedral on its list of endangered World Heritage Sites. A distinct landmark in the scenery of central Kutaisi, the cathedral rests on the Ukimerioni Hill. It is considered one of the four Great Cathedrals of the Georgian Orthodox world.

The Erovnuli Liga is the top division of professional football in Georgia. Since 1990, it has been organized by the Professional Football League of Georgia and Georgian Football Federation. From 1927 to 1989, the competition was held as a regional tournament within the Soviet Union. From 2017, the Erovnuli Liga switched to a spring-autumn system, with only 10 clubs in the top flight.

The Georgian Basketball Super League, also known as the Georgian Top League, is the highest professional basketball league in Georgia. The first season was played in 1991, and was won by Dinamo Tbilisi. The 1990s were dominated by BC Vita Tbilisi, who won the title a record 7 times. BC Batumi, and then Energy Invest Rustavi, dominated the following decade. More recently, the league was dominated by clubs attached to State departments, with first BC Armia establishing themselves as the country's leading club, and later BC MIA Academy(Ministry of Internal Affairs) winning the title.

The Kutaisi or Kutais Governorate was a province (guberniya) of the Caucasus Viceroyalty of the Russian Empire. It roughly corresponded to most of western Georgia throughout most of its existence, and most of the Artvin Province of Turkey between 1878 and 1903. Created out of part of the former Georgia-Imeretia Governorate in 1846, the governorate also included Akhaltsikhe uezd before its cession to the Tiflis Governorate in 1867. The Kutaisi Governorate bordered the Sukhumi Okrug to the northwest, the Kuban Oblast to the north, the Terek Oblast to the northeast, the Tiflis Governorate to the southeast, the Batum Oblast to the southwest, and the Black Sea to the west. The governorate was eponymously named for its administrative center, Kutais.

Kote Tugushi, is a Georgian professional basketball coach and former player. Since 2015, he has coached BC Kutaisi 2010 in Georgia. Also he was an assistant coach of Georgia's national basketball team. As a professional player, he played in Georgia and Iran. After his retirement as a player he won the Georgian Basketball Championship as head coach of BC Armia Tbilisi.

Kutaisi University is a private university in Kutaisi, Georgia. It was established in 1991 by Valerian Kelbakiani and Revaz Laghidze. Kutaisi University was the first higher educational institution in the western part of Georgia. At Kutaisi University, there are two faculties: the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Social Sciences, Business and Law. The current rector of the university is Gocha Tutberidze.

The 2016–17 Georgian Superliga was the 17th season of the Georgian Superliga since its establishment. Kutaisi were the defending champions, but could not retain the title after losing to Dinamo in the finals.

The 2019–20 Georgian Superliga is the 20th season of the Georgian Superliga since its establishment. Delta, renamed as Tskhum-Abkhazeti, were the defending champions.
