BNS Sher-e-Bangla is the first all service naval base being developed for the Bangladesh Navy at Rabnabad, Patuakhali. [2] With an area of 700 [3] acres this is the largest naval base of the Bangladesh Navy. Of that area 300 acres of land have been developed for naval base and 400 acres is devoted for naval aviation and submarine operations. [4] [5] [6] It is named after the 1st Prime Minister of Bengal, A. K. Fazlul Huq, who was known as Sher-e-Bangla or the Tiger of Bengal.

History

On 20 November 2013 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation for BNS Sher-e-Bangla at Rabnabad, Patuakhali. [7] On 2 January 2018 the executive committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved a project titled 'Establishment of BNS Sher-e-Bangla Patuakhali', worth Taka 1,081.50 crore. [8] The project was overseen by The Ministry of Defence, Bangladesh Navy and the Engineer in Chief Section of Bangladesh Army. [9] On 12 July 2023,The Prime Minister of Bangladesh commissioned [10] BNS Sher-e-Bangla through online VTC from his office. Navy Chief Admiral M Shaheen Iqbal handed over the commissioning order to the base commander Commodore M Mohabbat Ali. After that, the name plaque was unveiled as per the custom of the Navy. [11]

Facilities

The naval base comprises training facilities of New Entry Trainee Sailors (NETS) besides aviation & submarine facilities at Kalapara, Patuakhali. The base also has a unit of diving salvage for special operations Apart from this, there are administrative buildings, aviation support and hangar facilities, multipurpose sheds, various repair and maintenance workshops to facilitate operational activities, a naval school & college and a 50-bed hospital.

Functions

According to Bangladeshi officials the main role and functions of this base will be to provide maritime and coastal protection, air support at the seaport and its adjacent areas, and resistance to attack from external enemies. [4] [12]

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University or SAU(শেকৃবি) is the oldest agriculture educational institution in Bangladesh and South Asia. It is situated in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. It was established on 11 December 1938 as Bengal Agricultural Institute (BAI) by Sher-e-Bangla A. K. Fazlul Haque, the then Chief Minister of undivided Bengal and later upgraded to university in 2001 renamed it as Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University.

The Khulna Shipyard Limited(Bengali: খুলনা শিপইয়ার্ড লিমিটেড) is a Bangladeshi state owned defense contractor based in Khulna, Bangladesh. It is located on 68.97 acres (27.91 ha) of land at Labanchara, Khulna, Bangladesh. It is about 45 km north from the Port of Mongla. The shipyard has the capacity to build steel / aluminium ships up to 90 m length and 700 tons lightweight. The shipyard has a slipway with a capacity to dock and undock vessels up to 700 tons lightweight and overall length of 84 meters.

Forces goal 2030 is a military modernization program which began in 2009 and was revised in 2017. It was designed to enhance the capabilities of three service branches of Bangladesh Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The primary focus of the modernization program is the reformation of the military organization, expansion of the forces, the transformation of the indigenous defense sector to support research and manufacturing, and acquisition of modern military weapons. The requirement for modernization was realized in the aftermath of 2008 Bangladesh–Myanmar naval standoff later resulting in Bangladesh's favour. One of the primary objectives of the modernization program is to develop a three-dimensional force capable of conducting multi-platform warfare.

BNS Sheikh Hasina is a new naval base that has been developed for the Bangladesh Navy. This is the first ever full-fledged submarine base of Bangladesh Navy. Built at a cost of $1.21 billion, the base can accommodate a total of six submarines and eight warships at a time. It will allow for safe and swift movement of the submarines in case of emergency, as the base is located at the Bay of Bengal.

The 7th Infantry Division is a formation of the Bangladesh Army. It's located in Lebukhali of Patuakhali District. This is the first Bangladesh Army formation in the Barisal Division. It was formed as part of the development vision of Bangladesh Armed Forces Forces Goal 2030. This project will have an estimated cost of Tk. 16.99 billion and will be implemented by Ministry of Defence.

Hasina: A Daughter's Tale is a 2018 Bangladeshi independent historical docudrama directed by Piplu Khan, based on the life of Sheikh Hasina, the tenth Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
