Babatunde Lawal Salako (born 23 July 1959) is a Nigerian professor and author who is the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Yaba Lagos. Salako previously served as the first medical director at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, from 1978 to 1984. [1]

Early life and education

Salako was born on 23 July 1959 to the Salako family of 18 children in Sango Ota in Ogun State with Salako being the last. [2]

Salako attended Ansar Ud-Deen Practising School and Ansar-ud-deen College Offa for his Senior Secondary School certificate before proceeding to Kwara State College of Technology Ilorin and earned his Degree at University of Ibadan. [3]

Career

Salako was employed by the University of Ibadan, he served as Professor of Nephrology at the College of Medicine and held the positions of Honorary Consultant Physician. [4] Salako was the pioneer medical director of University College Hospital, Ibadan from 1978 to 1984 and served as the provost of the College of Medicine from 2014 to 2016. [1] [3]

Salako is the current director-general of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research. [1]

Membership

He is a member of Nigerian Academy of Science, International Society on Hypertension in Blacks, African Society of Human Genetics, International Society of Nephrology, Global Forum for Health Research, and World Heart Federation. [5] [6] He is a fellow for the residency training in department of Medicine at University of Ibadan. [7]

Babatunde Osotimehin was a Nigerian physician, who served as Minister of Health, and in 2011 became the executive director of the United Nations Population Fund, holding the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, reappointed in August 2014 until his death. Osotimehin's interests were youth and gender, and he advocated for reproductive health and reproductive rights, particularly within the context of the HIV epidemic. Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola OON(born 1958) is a Nigerian professor of medical microbiology, and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos. She specializes in disease control, particularly HIV/AIDS. Ogunsola was provost of College of Medicine, University of Lagos and is reputed as being the first woman to occupy the position. She was also the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the institution between 2017 and 2021. She was acting vice chancellor of the University of Lagos for a short period in 2020 when the University was plunged into crisis as a result of the removal of the Vice Chancellor by the University Council.

Olufunke Adeboye is a Nigerian professor of Social History at the Department of History and Strategic Studies of the University of Lagos, Nigeria, where she is also the incumbent Dean of the Faculty of Arts. Adeboye's research interests include gender in Africa, pre-colonial and colonial Nigerian history, nineteenth and twentieth century Yoruba society, African historiography, and Pentecostalism in West Africa.
