In The Mummy's Tomb (1942), which is set 30 years after the events of the previous film, a now elderly Babe comes to the town of Mapleton for Steve's funeral and finds out that he had weird strangulation marks on his neck when he was found dead, making him to conclude that the mummy Kharis is back and getting revenge on the members of the expedition for what happened 30 years ago.

History

Early life

Babe Jenson was born on February 12, 1870 in Brooklyn, New York where he also lived. In college, he met and fell in love with a blonde girl whom he called Poopsie and later on in life, he became an archaeologist for the Scripps Museum where he met, befriended and partnered up with fellow archaeologist Steve Banning and also became acquainted with his older sister Jane.

The Mummy's Hand

In 1912, Babe is in Cairo, Egypt along with Steve for an assignment by the Scripps Museum where the two are sent by their boss Mr. Lyons Scripps to find a tomb, dig it up and send it to the museum in London. Babe, whilst at the Cairo Market, buys a doll named after Poopsie but Steve then buys a vase sold at the market using their last 75 bucks, which makes Babe berate him for this whilst Steve tells him that they could benefit something from looking at this vase.

At the Cairo Museum, Steve, Babe and Dr. Petrie examine the vase with Steve saying that tells the place as The Hill of Seven Jackals. They then show it to Professor Andoheb in his room who destroys it, saying it was an accident and tells them that the vase is a fake sold to tourists, even telling Babe that he wasted all his money on it. Even though Babe and Steve are a little disheartened by what Andoheb said, Dr. Petrie still says that he will help the expedition.

The next day, Babe is at the local hotel pub drinking and rattling Poopsie to wish him luck whilst Steve comes by and says that everybody who he asked to help finance and join the expedition has refused. To pass the time, Babe decides to play a magic game with a man, who is a famous magician by the name of Solvani. A few minutes later, Steve and Babe introduce themselves to Solvani who says that his real name is Tim Sullivan and that he is from Brooklyn, New York. Babe and Steve then talk about the expedition with Solvani agreeing to finance it but their conversation is interrupted by a few of Andoheb's spies attacking the three led by the Cairo Beggar. Steve, Solvani and Babe manage to defeat them and they escape the restaurant with Solvani finally financing their expedition.

While Babe and Poopsie are in the hotel, they are visited by Marta Solvani/Sullivan who points a gun at Babe and shoots the bathroom door to show that she is serious, also telling Babe to give her father the money back or she will shoot him and also thinking that he is Steve Banning. Steve suddenly appears behind Marta from the bathroom, having heard the gunshots, and subdues her, saying that they are sorry for stealing money from her father. Marta however tells them that they are very poor and that the two spent the last few remaining money they had whilst she also tells them that she is going to be part of the expedition before she then leaves the hotel room. Babe then informs Steve by telling him that there is now a dame (woman) in the group.

A few weeks later, Babe, Steve, Marta and Solvani go on the expedition to the Hill of the Seven Jackals with Dr. Petrie and their Egyptian guide Ali. Once they arrive there, Babe accidentally dynamites some rocks which opens a cave and makes all of the Egyptian workers run alongside Ali. Steve, Babe, Marta, Solvani and Dr. Petrie go in, while they are watched from the top by Andoheb and the Cairo Beggar. Once they go in, they open the tomb inside only to reveal that it is not Ananka but the mummified Kharis.

That night, Steve, Babe and Dr. Petrie examine Kharis but they are called outside because Ali has returned. Whilst Steve and Babe are talking to Ali, they hear a scream from inside and go in and see Petrie's dead body and that Petrie is strangled. As the clock ticks closer to midnight, Babe, Steve, Marta, Ali and Solvani are hanging outside the tents until all of a sudden, they hear a noise from Marta and Solvani's tent and see Ali's dead body with the same strangulation marks as Dr. Petrie.

As it finally comes to midnight, Babe does more tricks with Solvani and jokes about how he could easily make money for them, also saying if they could ever even find Ananka's tomb whilst Steve tells him that he figured out the key to where it is along with Marta. A few hours later, Marta and Solvani go to sleep in Steve's tent and Steve and Babe watch outside for any indication of the unidentified murderer killing the expedition members, while Babe tries to practice a rock magic trick by putting a rock in his mouth but it doesn't work and he takes the rock out.

They suddenly hear a sound and go in the tent to see Solvani half strangled and telling them that the murderer kidnapped Marta before passing unconscious which makes them run outside and see Kharis carrying an unconscious Marta up the mountain, causing the two to get their guns and run to rescue Marta from Kharis.

In the chase, they get split after they both kill the Cairo Beggar who tries to assassinate them. Babe runs to the top of the mountain and runs into Andoheb, who reveals himself as a high priest and tells Babe where Marta is. Babe goes inside but before he could take a step inside, Andoheb shoots but misses him using a silencer gun. Babe then turns around and shoots the high priest before he could take out his gun with the priest falling down to his apparent death down the stairs.

Babe then arrives inside the main temple room where he shoots the tana leaves, causing Kharis to get them. Steve grabs the tana leaves container containing fire and smash Kharis with it, burning and knocking him to death. Steve then saves Marta who then falls in his arms whilst Babe also falls down unconscious. A few days later, Steve, Babe, Marta and Solvani are at the Cairo market where Steve gives the fixed vase back to the shopkeeper and then picks up another one. Marta says that they have to go back to the States which causes Steve to put the vase down and then him, Babe, Marta and Solvani to laugh at a letter sent to them by the Scripps Museum. [1]

The Mummy's Tomb

After they arrive in America from a ship, Steve and Marta get married and Marta and Solvani meet Steve's sister Jane Banning who reunites with Steve and Babe before the wedding begins and ends.

After that, Steve, Marta, Solvani and Jane return to Steve's hometown of Mapleton, Massachusetts and stay there for the rest of their lives whilst Babe returns to Brooklyn and over there, becomes very rich from the money he gets from finding Ananka's tomb.

In The Mummy's Tomb , 30 years have passed since Babe and Steve's mummy adventures in Egypt. In 1942, Babe returns to Mapleton for Steve's funeral and hears from his son John Banning that Steve had weird Egyptian strangulation marks on his neck when he was found dead, which Babe concludes that the mummy Kharis has returned. Later, Babe learns that Jane, Steve's sister, who always favored him as Steve's best friend is also dead.

One night at a bar, a Mapleton reporter recognizes Babe and interviews him about the 1912 expedition where he says the story and the mummy's weakness before also reporting that he is going to put a stop to all of this mayhem in Mapleton. As Babe leaves the bar, he runs into Kharis again and quickly runs away from him to the corner of an alleyway where he tries to climb the corner wall but falls down and is immediately grabbed to be strangled by Kharis. Babe tries his best to fight the mummy, even grabbing a wooden log and hitting him with it but fails and is subsequently strangled to death by Kharis. His dead body is shown in John's hospital where he works at to the law enforcement the next day with the same strangulation marks on his neck and his death is reported on the newspapers that same day as well. Babe's death would ultimately be the third member of the Banning family or friends (who was on the 1912 Egypt expedition) to be slain by Kharis to get revenge for what happened in 1912. [2]

Character influence

Babe being a comedy relief character in The Mummy's Hand would later partially inspire the character Jonathan Carnahan (portrayed by John Hannah) from the Stephen Sommers Mummy films from 1999 to 2008 where Jonathan would be the brother of love interest Evelyn Carnahan (portrayed by Rachel Weisz and Maria Bello) and friend and later brother-in-law of Rick O'Connell (portrayed by Brendan Fraser), the character inspired by Steve Banning.

Universal Pictures released a comic in The Monsters of Filmland magazine which was a comic book adaptation of The Mummy's Hand and featured Jenson using the likeness of Ford. [3]
