Baby Guru is a Greek band based in Athens. Their music traverses the wider spectre of rock, with heavy influences from genres such as krautrock and psychedelic rock, while the lyrics of their songs are almost exclusively written in English. They have released three albums, two of which had an international distribution.
The members of the band are King Elephant (Yannis Karras), Prins Obi (Yorgos Dimakis, initially under the name Obi Serotone), who is the singer and main lyricist of the band and Sir Kosmiche (Axios Zafirakos). The three childhood friends started playing music together during the last years of highschool under the name Art. Later Karras and Zafirakos were members of the band Duke Abduction for a short period. The three of them met again in 2009 and begun jamming in their own studio and creating musical tracks by sampling and editing the recordings of their jam sessions. The name of the band was inspired by the krautrock band Guru Guru and Captain Beefheart’s song “Ella Guru” [1] In 2010 they gave a series of live performances in Athens, while they distributed electronically their first EP, Yogi Sister vol. I & vol. ΙΙ, a collection of their early recordings.
Their first self-titled work, Baby Guru, was released in September 2011 by the indie label Inner Ear records. An early limited edition print of Baby Guru in vinyl quickly sold out, a sign of the interest that the band had raised. [2] The album's music style bared heavy krautrock influences by bands such as Can and Neu!, with the short length of the tracks however giving them a more pop feel in comparison to the music of the aforementioned bands. Critical reception was relatively positive, highlighting the band's distinct sound in comparison to other contemporary Greek indie groups, however some critics were dismissive of what they considered a stale attachment to the past, while some of the compositions were judged as abstract stylistic exercises. Baby Guru's first work in 2012 was the music for the theater show Why I killed my best friend, an adaptation of a novel with the same title by Amanda Michalopoulou. [4] In June of that year King Elephant released his first solo work titled Under the bed while August saw the free digital release of the EP Covers that contained an intro and three cover songs.
Baby Guru's sophomore album, Pieces, was released in October 2012 and it was widely accepted as a significant step forward compared to ‘’Baby Guru’’. [5] The krautrock influences were still there but this time there were further explorations of the psychedelic rock of the ‘60s and ‘70s, while guitars became a more prominent part of their sound. [6] The album was released in several European countries under distribution by Rough Trade and V2 records, gathering favorable reviews. [7] In the beginning of 2013 the band embarked on a mini tour in the Netherlands to support the local release of Pieces. [8] Towards the end of 2013 Prins Obi released digitally gratis his first solo EP, Love Songs for Instant Success. [9]
Their third album, titled Marginalia was released in March 2014. The references to krautrock and psychedelia remained, while the band expanded further its music by turning towards new wave and synthpop of the ‘80s. [10] The opening track and first single, "Especially when", was built around guitar riffs, an unusual choice for the band. Also, for the first time they included a song with Greek lyrics, “Exegersis”. Once again critical acceptance was very positive with many considering it as Baby Guru's best release. [11] [12] The band did extensive touring to support the release of the album. [13] [14] In October 2014 they appeared in the CMJ Music Marathon in New York, where they were hailed as one of the 5 top discoveries of the festival. [15]
Following their growing fame and fanbase Sunshine Special was released in Autumn 2015. It features songs in Greek and English and generally received good critics.
Tortoise is an American post-rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois in 1990. The band incorporates krautrock, dub, minimal music, electronica and jazz into their music, a combination sometimes termed "post-rock". Tortoise have been consistently credited for the rise of the post-rock movement in the 1990s.
Anna Vissi, also known as Anna Vishy, is a Greek Cypriot singer, songwriter, actress, television presenter, radio personality, and businesswoman. She studied music at conservatories and performed locally before moving to the professional scene in Athens, in 1973, where she signed with Minos and simultaneously collaborated with other musical artists and released promotional singles of her own while studying at the University of Athens.
Despina Vandi, born as Despina Malea on 22 July 1969, is a Greek singer. Born in Tübingen near Stuttgart, Germany, Vandi's family returned to Kavala, Greece when she was six years old.
Rock and roll entered Greece in the middle of the 1960s. Greek rock performers in the field include Pavlos Sidiropoulos, Dimitris Poulikakos. Well known globally Greek rock bands are "Aphrodite's Child", "Socrates drunk the Conium" and "The Last Drive".
Kostas Martakis is a Greek singer, model, television host and actor, who rose to fame after appearing on Greek talent show Dream Show aired by Alpha TV in 2006. Following his participation, he released five studio albums and also participated in the Greek national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2008 and 2014. In 2011, he participated in the second season of Greece's Dancing with the Stars, placing second and three years later he was in the backstage host featuring Doukissa Nomikou. In 2013, he took part in the first season of Your Face Sounds Familiar.
Onirama is a Greek pop rock band that has had a number of hits in Greece. They are known for their wide range of music, and party-like concerts.
Pio Konta is the second album released by Greek singer Kostas Martakis, released in Greece and Cyprus on 12 November 2009 by Universal Music Greece. The album has eleven songs in total, including two English language songs. Furthermore, five songs were recorded and produced at Lionheart Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. The album went gold within four days of its release, and was later certified platinum.
Ivi Adamou is a Greek Cypriot singer. She was born and raised in Agia Napa, Cyprus and currently resides in Alexandroupoli, Greece. Adamou rose to recognition in Greece and Cyprus following her participation in the second season of the Greek version of The X Factor, where she was under the mentorship of Giorgos Theofanous. Right after her elimination from the X Factor, Adamou secured a recording contract with Sony Music Greece. She gained further recognition from her participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2012, where she represented Cyprus with the song "La La Love".
Marianna Chantelle Hansen, known professionally as Shaya, is a Greek singer of Danish, Inuit, Guyanese and Native American descent. Shaya was a member of the girl band Hi-5, the result of the Greek version of the talent show Popstars. She is currently pursuing a solo career and finished fifth in Greece's version of Dancing on Ice.
Entasi is the third studio album by Greek singer Kostas Martakis, released in Greece and Cyprus on 5 December 2011 by Universal Music Greece. The album has fifteen songs in total, including an English language song, two duets, three covers, and one remix.

Argo is a Greek band that represented Greece in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden, singing "Utopian Land". Their previous name was Europond but they changed it for their participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016. They performed "Utopian Land" on the first semi final of Eurovision on May 10, 2016 but failed to qualify to the May 14 final. This was the first time since the semi finals were introduced in 2004 that Greece had failed to reach the final.
